dell inspiron event log errors

I am hoping you guys may be able to adivse

I have owned my dell inspiron 1520 for a few years now, and have upgraded the ram to 4gb for a litle extra speed.

I have recently been getting a blue screen crash and reboot, it only flashes for a moment but it seems to be memory dump problems. I have tried changing the "automatically manage paging file size" to custom (putting in the recomended amount of 5359). This seems to work for a while but then for some reason when I checked today after the blue screen occured it had gone down to around 3000?

I am using the event viewer to try and find out what other problems may be uderlying, these are currently listed (I did reboot in safe mode so some may of been caused by this?)

Event Id 49 volmgr :
Configuring the Page file for crash dump failed. Make sure there is a page file on the boot partition and that is large enough to contain all physical memory.

Event Id 4609 EventSystem :
The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043c from line 45 of d:\longhorn\com\complus\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

Event Id 6008 Eventlog :
The previous system shutdown at 12:35:17 on 16/05/2010 was unexpected.

Event Id 7000 Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider :

Event Id 7001 Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider :

Event Id 7009 Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider :

Event Id 7026 Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider :

NetBIOS
netbt

Smb
spldr
SRTSPX
SymIRON

Event Id 10005 DistributedCOM :

Any suggestions would be appreiciated

You can't create a full memory dump with 4GB of memory. Windows can't handle it.

Change the setting in Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Startup and Recovery Settings:

Uncheck "Automatically Restart".

"Write debugging information" to Small memory dump (64kb).

The next time you have a BSOD, upload the minidump:

Go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.

Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

The dumps you uploaded are inconclusive.

In the meantime, try the following:

Run System File Checker (see How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7).

Download and install Malwarebytes (Malwarebytes). Run a full scan (in Safe mode to make sure it doesn't have any conflicts with any other anti-virus/malware programs you run).

Try a Startup Repair http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91467-startup-repair.html?filter[11]=Performance%20Maintenance.

The next time you get a BSOD,

1. Download SysInternals AutoRuns from Microsoft TechNet, run it and File > Save the output to your desktop as AutoRuns.arn (It'll take a minute or so to run).

2. Run MSInfo (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information), File > Export to a text file (MSInfo.txt) on your desktop.

3. Open an Administrative command prompt and type in perfmon /report; a viewer will appear (again, it'll take a minute or so). File > Save as a HTML file (PerfMon.html) on your desktop.

4. Copy the latest minidump file to your desktop.

5. Press the Ctrl key and left-click on each of the minidump file, AutoRuns.arn, MSInfo.txt, and PerfMon.html so that they are high-lighted; right-click on MSInfo.txt, click on Send To, then Compressed (zipped) Folder.

6. Upload the resulting MSInfo.zip file on your desktop. You can safely delete the individual files once you've uploaded the zip file.

many thanks for the detailed reply,

I have just tried the Run System File Checker, and it reported "windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations"

I will try the other things you suggested when i get home from work tomorrow.

Also someone else mentioned that it could be my nortons conflicting, and as it has just run out i have now removed it and installed "Microsoft Security Essentials"

Hello joeturbo,
This is the result of your bugcheck.

STOP 0x00000050: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Usual causes: Defective hardware, Faulty system service, Antivirus, Device driver, NTFS corruption, BIOS.

Remove your AV. (don't forget to re-install after this is fixed).
If anything is overclocked, set it back to default.
Unplug all USB devices.
Open a command prompt as administrator and type sfc/scannow press enter and let it scan, if errors are found you will need to run this again until clean.

Go to this site and download the diagnostic software for you HDD.

Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

You can also try a clean boot too. If this fixes the problem, enable the items one at a time to see which one is the culprit.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Take a look at this, read the whole article first though. This will tell you if a driver is causing this issue.

How to identify a buggy device driver on Windows Vista | Vista Rewired

You mentioned that you had upgraded the memory, did it blue screen before this, and is the memory compatible with your machine ?, remove all but one stick of ram and try the system, if all goes well swap the sticks and try again.

A few jobs to be going on with lol, take your time and if you need any help with any of the above processes just ask.

Hope this is of some use, good luck and post your results.

many thanks for taking the time to reply,

Remove your AV. (don't forget to re-install after this is fixed) = I removed nortons recently and installed MSE as someone suggested my AV may of been the cause of the blue screen

If anything is overclocked, set it back to default = wouldnt know where to even start with overclocking so is standard

Unplug all USB devices = no usb plugged in.

Will carry on with the rest now, many thanks again

I have looked at my device manager and found that under disk drives i have a Fujutsu MHW2080BH ATA device. I have have a look at the link provided by stoney and found/downloaded "FJDT (Fujitsu ATA Diagnostic Tool) v6.90 (11.03.2006)"

I have just run the program and have been told it cannot find any hard disk drive? I seem to remember someone saying dell pc's have there own hard drive diagnostic tool which i think i run not long ago.

I dont think the clean boot will help as i only get the BSOD on random occasions (not every time i use the pc)?

I will look at the driver link now

i think/hope i may be getting somewhere, using the driver verifier i found 2 files..

fanio.sys, which was a free software to check internal temps/fans

pxhelp20.sys, which after searching on google appears to be a sonic driver, someone has written this "It is a CD writing driver used by Sonic RecordNow. This software usually comes pre-installed on Dell PCs with CDRWs installed. Removing this file will break Sonic RecordNow. This DLL is also used by serveral other CD writing applications that have licensed the Sonic codebase to write CDs in their own applications. This file can get corrupted sometimes, resulting in bluescreens. If this occurs, delete the file, and re-install Sonic Recordnow. See also: Link "

hmm, not sure as in the discription next to pxhelp20.sys it says "px engine device driver forwindows 2000/xp"

Any ideas?

Looks like its part of Dells old bloatware.
Un-install both of these drivers and try the system to see if you get a BSOD, you can always re-install them at a later date if necessary.

many thanks for all your help with this guys, i have un-installed the fan software as i no longer want/need it. How can i find the pxhelp20.sys file to uninstall it?

Sounds like its going to be a pig to uninstall, need to edit registry.

"after removing this driver you have to edit the registry to remove it from the CD/DVD driver (upper/lowerfilter) or else your drive will fail to work! (this driver is AFAIK no part of windows!) See also: Link"
