You may want to pay attention to the drivers, seem to be outdated. Memory seems to be a likely candidate, follow Stoney's good advice and download the memtest. Wish you luck with this aggrevating problem

I really hope its not the memory as i already had them replaced once when i started getting the blue screens as they were my first thought. I will try the test.

As for the outdated drivers? Can you tell what ones are outdated as when looking my device manager/verifier nothing shows as out of date. I looked on dell support and the most recent driver for the intel 965 chipset is 8/4/2008 but when i look on intels own site the most recent driver is 3/5/2009

this sounds lame but i remember trying to use this memtest before but didnt understand how to..
I have 4GB of ram and a intel core 2 duo T5250 @ 1.50ghz

Edit..

Ok i have 2 instances of the memtest running at 1272mb. Straight away one came up and says

"memory error detected! pair 28715008 does not store values accurately.

Memtest has detected that your computer cannot accurately store data in RAM.
You need to fis this.

See the online FAQ, question 2 for advice on what to do next"

One thing that is a little odd is that one memtest so far has 0 errors and the other has 3.

right i have been having lots of fun testing...

I have now tested each memory stick individually in each slot and every time i got error messages when running memtest. So this got me thinking it must be the memory sticks so i then tried my original two 516mb sticks but had the same error messages come up

Any ideas what could be the cause?

What is the best way to go about finding and updating the drivers? I have downloaded all the latest updates from Dell's support site

Had 2 BSOD today :-( another dump attached

How to identify a buggy device driver on Windows Vista | Vista Rewired

Is the memory problem caused by the socket and not the stick itself?

Drivers http://xpdrivers.com/index.cfm

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/193584-device-manager-install-driver.html

I will get to the dumps as soon as possible. Lot of Summer Weekend stuff going on,will take time to analyze all of them.

Here is the last one that you sent. it indicates memory problem.

ill have a look at the driver links in a mo, as for the memory, are the sockets likely to go? I have no idea how i would/could go about fixxing them (as i have tried a single stick in both and still get the errors so points towards it being both sockets damaged if that is the case). What would cause the sockets to be faulty?

do i need to buy this driver detective?

Driver detective found 7 intel, 2 microsoft and one mass storage driver out of date. when using intel to scan my system for updated drivers i got the following message

"

Its possible that the memory controller on the MB has an issue, if so, this will give you all the symptoms of faulty memory sticks.

Also, you have to remember that Driver Detective is trying to sell you their product, so it is in their interest to find drivers that need replacing. Whether they need replacing or not is another thing altogether.

right the 2 microsoft drivers that were out of date are for my wireless keyboard and mouse (7/11/2006 - 6.10.155). I have been able to locate a newer driver (5/8/2009 - 7.00.258). I have downloaded this to a folder on my desktop but having problems updating my current driver using device manager. It says updating but when i look it still shows as the old driver (6.10.155). What am i missing?

As for the memory controller, how do i investigate this?

The memory controller is normally integrated in to the MB chipset, but can be a separate chip, or part of the CPU, as you have updated the chipset drivers it is looking like it may be hardware as opposed to software.

Here is a link that will explain what the MC does.

1 USB Mass Storage Device - Port_#0001.Hub_#0007

Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Mouse / Keyboard.

An looking on intel on site it does say there are more recent drivers for the 965 chipset i have, maybe i should create a restore point and just download that direct from intel?
