My new Gaming Rig...

Is the core temp your CPU or GPU? Idle temp or at load?

If it's your CPU at idle at 49c then no, it's not good. I'd check a few other apps and check what the BIOS is reporting the temps as.

As for decreasing the temps, improve your cases airflow and /or replace the stock heatsink (if it's stock).

Actually there are a number of factors that can affect CPU temps, including the chip revision. Example, my Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz) "B3" revision, non-overclocked idled @52 degrees Celsius on a stock CPU cooler inside an Antec P182 case with 3 80mm fans running at medium speed. My room temp in the summer is around 70F (21c).

In the winter my room temps are around 55F (13c) and this same processor under the same case conditions ran around 37c idle!

Some people will say that’s hot, but that’s about right for this "B3 Q6600" processor! The "GO" revision runs a little cooler, I think by about 7-10 degrees Celsius lower.

Now, with a Zalman CNPS9500 AT CPU cooler this same B3 Q6600 processor overclocked to 2.9GHz idles around 30ish in the winter and around lower 40ish in the summer.

CPU Temps - Mar 28.JPG

So you see… there are lots of variables to consider. My suggestion to the poster would be to check with others and see what they report for temps on his CPU and take the average. Now...Are the temps above or below that?

That's some crazy increase there...

Three possible reasons:

Your new location is blocking the air flow.

I don't believe this is the case as the case is more open to air flow than before

The side fan is interrupting the front to back air flow and is stopping the hot air from exhausting properly.
I was thinking of this as well but here's the kicker... depending on the booting or rebooting, sometimes, the GPU reads + 60c, other times, it reads + 35c

Your VC card fan is set low in the Nvidia control panel.
I am using the EVGA Precission Tool and I have manually set the fan speed at 75%... default is 40

I personally use Everest Ultimate to monitor temps as I've found it's one of the best. Others you can try:

GPU-Z:
GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility

Speedfan:
SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

For CPU:

Realtemp:
Real Temp - CPU temperature monitoring

Coretemp:
Core Temp
I am using Everest at the moment, as a matter of fact, I am using the Everest Plugin for my G15 KB and I have been able to make a nice script for it... CPU Core Temps, Mem Util %, GPU Temp, Mobo Temp & Time

I with smarteyeball about Everest, though it'll cost $35 (US) dollars for the full version, It gives a wealth of information and is well worth every penny spent!

You can download the trial version here - Lavalys - Comprehensive IT Security and Management

Outside of that, the other programs samrteyeball mentioned are good...and free. They're all highly rated and support Vista x64.

But again, if you want a "tell all" program, Everest.
Yep, as you can see, that's the one I am currently using but, since it was acting weird, I thought I had a problem with it.

Is the core temp your CPU or GPU? Idle temp or at load?
It is my GPU, idle temp, funny thing is that when it starts this high, it only goes to about 72c while loaded or under heavy firefights.

As for decreasing the temps, improve your cases airflow and /or replace the stock heatsink (if it's stock).

I am using the Thermaltake Spedo Advance Case, you can not get more fans and/or airflow with this case. I am also using the CoolerMaster V8 Cooler.

During the weekend, I am going to try taking the case out and unplugging the side case fan out to see if that changes in any way but I am still baffled by the fact that, at times, the computers starts with the GPU idleing at + 35c

Well, truth be told, I didn't see your post when I posted mine but now that I see it, I kinda had the feeling it wasn't posted for me.

I forgot to add this on my previous post:

Whenever I use the EVGA Precision Tool (1.60) and up the fan speed from default 40 to about 65, the card makes this loud squeaking sound, kinda like something inside is loose or touching the fan.

Before getting all bent out of shape and RMA'ng the card, can you guys tell me if this is normal?

I know what a fan at high RPMs sound like and the sound this card makes is nothing remotely close.

Thanks for the heads up guys

Back to the GPU temp, maybe you should use Everest to log your PC activity over a couple of hours and see if you notice a trend. (file>preferences>logging)

The fact that it sometimes reads 35c could possibly indicate a flaky sensor

As long as your load temps aren't bad, it should be fine.

EDIT:

yeah, "squeaking" isn't good. It could be a bearing or the fan is "off centre".

I am going to change to... "My not so new Gaming Rig and all the assorted woes I am having with it since I decided to install Vista x64!" :o :p

Back to the thread... ;)

@ sygnus21... Yes this is an EVGA GTX260 wit the Nvidia Chipset, I went to the EVGA site and read that someone was telling an owner of a GTX280 that squeaking or squealing sounds were ok on that card so it got me thinking. I posted something there as well but I really trust you guys more than I can trust them, hence, my posting it here as well.

@smarteyeball... I will try to log that on Everest when I get home tonight to see what it tells me. When you say Flaky sensor, I am almost positive that you are talking about the card and not Everest or the Mobo but I just want to make sure I am understanding this 100%.

On the other side of the token, I was finally able to make the Brother Network printer work with my Vista PC and the other 2 XP Machines. It wasn't easy but it wasn't complex either, it just took a lot of changes to get to it and I really don't know what did the trick so I think that all I did was put a band aid to it for the time being... only time will tell.

Sygnus21, that link you offered about the LLTD file but it did not help any, at the time of installing it, it gave me an error. Something about the file being installed was older than the one I already have (I knew I should have written it down, sorry!).

I remember Turning Share Printer and Files ON, I also remember allowing Share printer and files on the Firewall, both for the XP & Vista PCs, even though I don't know why since I don't care about seeing the other PCs or sharing files between them but I did it anyhow as I was desperate to get this thing going.

I tried installing the printer with the recommended CD and recommended options but it wouldn't print nor I was able to see the Printer on my Network.

Finally, I opted for installing the printer with the cd but, instead of telling it to search for it, I choose the option to type the IP address for it and as soon as it was done, I rebooted the pc. When I came back to the desktop, the task manager icon for the printer was still greyed out so I was ready to toss it out the window when all of a sudden... VIOLA, Green Light and I was able to print from it.

I wish I could start a thread to let others know that this is plausible but I don't know where to start or how to begin explaining what I did so, hopefully, one someone gets in trouble, I'll be able to help a bit.

Yep, you got it. I'm not saying the sensor on the card is flaky, but it's just an idea. I'd be paying attention to the correlation between GPU load and the temp.

Good news about your printer too :)

The point of referring you to an Nvidia site is to see what users are saying about a particular product. In that regard you found what you were looking for ;)

As far as getting "trustworthy" answers from them for your posts, well that's a matter of opinion. The way I look at it is like this, this site specializes in Vista, so when I have a questions about Vista, I come here, on the other hand, Rage3d specializes in ATI video cards, so when I have a question about ATI video cards, I go there. While both sites are capable of answering a question, depending on the question will determine which site I use. It's not about being loyal or disloyal; it’s about getting an answer from a specialist. Going back to whether an answer is trustworthy from a particular forum - you wouldn't know that unless you hung around, just like you do here ;)

LLTD??? I'm assuming that was the file I told you to download from Microsoft concerning Vista's ability to see XP? If so, yeah I could see you being told the file is older as it may have been incorporated in SP1, which you have. So...

Typing in the IP address was a good move for getting the printer to work with both? PCs.

Yep, even the EVGA guys are telling me that some heavy noise is common on the GTX285 & 295 cards but a squealing or squeaking sound is not common on the GTX260 or any of them.

I guess I am going to be calling the TEch Support to see what they say.

Hmmm, I had Zero issues with the EVGA 680i card even though almost everyone else was saying the board was crap. This is why I decided to go with the EVGA Video Card and new 780i Mobo but it appears I am having the bad luck I didn't get last year.

Thanks guys

You used all your good luck up ;)

Sucks if it's got to be 2 RMA's in one build :(

Yep, I guess saving your Good Luck is just as bad as using it! :D

Only good thing is that EVGA products are life time guarantee so I might just go with it like for a while and see what happens. I really don't want to send another thing back to be RMA'd.

Well, it appears that all the fuzz was that a cable was touching the fan on the EVGA Video Card, hence, the squealing noise when I was upping the fan's rpm and they were also touching the bottom fan so, I went back and fixed all that and all is well.

Well, all is well as far as the squeaking sound is concern, I still believe that having to many fans on the case (even if installed correctly) is making a vortex and not letting the Video Card breath accordingly since the CPU seems to be at lower 30's C and the Video Card is still in the high 40's at idle.

For the most part, I am happy with it, perhaps to over stressed mentally to really enjoy it.

I 'll be out of the city for about a week so I won't get to use my PC, only working laptop, perhaps being away from it will help me realize how good the new rig really is ;)

Again, you will ;) :p

Glad to hear you worked out the squeal issue :)

Will it be to much to ask you guys for another issue I am having? It has to do with having two monitors but I don't know whether it would be a good idea to post it here or in the dedicated forum.

We, well, mostly me have threadjacked this post to death though :D
