Computer randomly restarts when playing games... vista problem? Idk.

When I first got my computer, it worked just fine, I played all my games such as Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and WoW on the fullest settings without a problem. Then a few months later it began restarting after anywhere between 30 mins to 1hour+ of playing. I called the makers of my computer, we tried to see if it was overheating but it wasnt, I also tested the videocards, it wasnt that either. Then, out of nowhere it fixed itself for a few months, then out of nowhere it happened again. I restored my computer to an earlier time and it worked for a few days and now it's restarting again.

Could this be a Vista problem? I had a friend who said he had the same problem with his new comp but he upgraded to windows 7 and it has yet to restart... I have no idea, any sort of help would be much appreciated...

Thanks.

Ok I did everything you said but it came up with this:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

So, it looks like that's not the problem. Thank you for the suggestion though, anymore suggestions?

My comp restarted again today... I just really want to get this fixed :(

No I haven't tried that, what does that do?

The SFC command checks the integrity of the system files, and will attempt to fix missing or corrupt files.

Do you have the latest driver for your video card?

Does it only shut down playing on games? Or is it random? How recent is this problem?

Hey guys,

Tom -
the problem has been happening for the past year off and on. It randomly fixes itself but just recently my computer began restarting again. I do have all the latest video card drivers.
Also it only happens when I'm playing games, never when surfing the web or when it's left on for long periods of time.

Stoneys -
I just filled in the specs that I could, if you need more lemme know I'll try and find them some how. I do have SP 1 and 2 installed, just checked my update history.

richc46 -
I have done that already in the past, it still restarts without warning no matter what.

Thank you everyone for the responses.

Thanks for all the information, with your spec you should have no problems playing even the most demanding of games.

I hope you are not offended by me asking this, but are these games legal copies? I only ask because cracks and patches are often laced with problems.

Hello deszilla,
Can you confirm that nothing is overclocked.

I think you need to start diagnosing the hardware. richc46 is on the right track, after checking the memory, i think i would remove one card and see if there is any improvement, then, depending on the results, swap the card and try the other one.

I have seen this before, it turned out it was the PSU, what PSU do you have ?.

Can you install SpeedFan and tell us what the temps are, thanks.

Download SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

I'm assuming you have the latest video drivers and DirectX version, in case you don't, here is the link.

Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime

Are there any driver updates for your video card, sound card, and chipset drivers ?.

Lastly, can you download, update, and scan with this free software, thanks.

Malwarebytes

Give this a go and post your results, good luck.

Ok, I ran the memtest on every stick of Ram, it found no errors on any of them. I already have speed fan downloaded, I looked at the cooling while talking to the makers of my comp and the cooling was perfectly fine. I don't have any viruses, I use AVG and pay for it (legitimately).

As for my PSU, its a 650watt, could it be too small for dual Nvidia 9800gt's? do you think I might possibly need a bigger power supply?

How hot are your graphics cards getting, i ran two BFG 8800 Ultras, and they got hot hot hot, had to fit three extra case fans to deal with it.
Try it with one card and see what happens.

Hey guys,
In the past I took out one videocard and it seemed to fix it but then it restarted after a week or more. I put the other one back in and it seemed to fix it again but then it restarted again which is where I'm at now... :(

I took one card out and tried playing games with that. It worked for awhile and then I put the other card back in so both cards were in at the same time. I never swapped the other card out though.

Try one card at a time, if one is bad, it will pull the other one down, i had this with two BFG 88oo Ultras, took me ages to find out what it was, still having nightmares. ;)
