White Screen after login

Hi, i've had problems with my vista laptop for sometime but today it got worse. Startup has been taking nearly about 7/8 minutes each time but now when i login it is just a whitescreen with the cursor. i can start task manager and shut down but i must startup in safe mode to do anything which is very inconvenient.

Does anyone know what is the problem, and how i can sort it out. Please also be aware that i no longer have my repair dvd as i have had the laptop a couple of years,

Thanks for your help in advance,
Mark

In this link, you will be able to download a vista recovery disk (don't worry, it's completely legal) from which you can do a repair install to fix your system.

Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download — The NeoSmart Files

Do you know how to do a repair install? Or would you like me to give you instructions?

Tom, just to point out, this download does not contain install.wim (which makes it legal), and so you cannot do a Repair or Clean install from it. Even if you could, you could not do a Repair install from Safe Mode. All this CD contains (about 120mb, is the Recovery Options (System Restore, Command Prompt etc.)

Hi Richard,

So have you got any other suggestions to help me with this.

Thanks

Hello,

I could not give suggestions then (only a time problem, I did not have enough of this precious resource), and I cannot give a full answer until this evening, but here is something simple to try in the meantime.

Boot into Safe Mode, and press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue.

Type cmd and press enter.

Type sfc /scannow and press enter. Let the scan finish, it will take about 15 minutes.

When it has finished, run it once more (to fix more errors, and if Integrity Violations are still found, copy and paste findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt and press enter. This will be instantaneos, and then upload the sfcdetails.txt file now on your Desktop.

We will go from there.

Thanks!

P.S. Don't worry about it Tom, detract from the past, but do not let the past detract from you.

Did the SFC actually run? If it did, navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ and copy the CBS.log file to your Desktop. Then try to upload that file here. If this does not work, becuase the file is too large, right click on it, and select Send To > Compressed (zip) Archive, and then upload that .zip file, which should now upload. We need this log, so thanks for the time!

Hi, here is the information requested. hope this helps. Thanks again for your time,

Mark

Thanks very much! You did it perfectly! Now, give me a few more minutes to look at that log, it is a bit dire! It does however, show us what the problems may be, there are several boot critical components damaged. In the mean time, can you please re-run the scan, and upload the new log (do not worry about trying to parse it, just zip up cbs.log)

This will show me what still needs to be repaired, and then I will send you manual fixes for the still corrupt files. Once the scan has run, can you also please confirm that your computer still does not boot, and goes to this white screen.

How old is your computer (in years) and particularly, have you ever changed the hard disk, or suspected a virus?

Thanks!

Richard

P.S. Do not worry at the moment, we have carried out manual fixes many times, more worrying is what caused these problems in the first place, but I will go into those details later.

Hello again,

I have had a better look at that log, and it looks like two files have been repaired (explorer.exe and mpssvc.dat), but there are still boot critical files corrupt. The files I think we need to hit hard (after confirmation from that new log) are: dfsrres.dll and RDPCDD.sys at first, and then look at the few other unverified entries.

Hello,

I am very busy at the moment, and I cannot answer this until Tuesday Evening, so could I please ask you Tom, to parse the log using the normal code, and then upload the files that are mentioned as corrupt. Ignore the Firewall file, for the moment, but do the rest. I am also suspicious about explorer.exe file, as it looks like it has been fixed, but has appeared in the old and new log, so I suspect that it has not. Find the closest match file wise, bit number must be correct, try to get from the correct Edition, but if not, try to get from closest Edition you can, and then we will replace properly afterwards. Ignore the asp.net corruptions for the moment, just do the file names. Can I ask you to do this Tom?

Then when you have received these files, put them in EXCEPT explorer.exe, and try to boot again. If it still does not work, replace explorer.exe, try to boot again, and post a new SFC log, either way.

Good luck!

Richard

RDPCDD.sys is a Microsoft Windows RDP miniport driver

mpssvc.dat is a Windows Firewall component

storelayout.cpp (I don't know, and can't find anything about it)

Explorer.exe is a Windows GUI shell that lets you see your hard drives, folders, and files (I know you will know this Richard, but I have included this for the benefit of other people experiencing the same problem)
