Well... I am already nore than a couple of months with the some problem. I tried everythinh I know ... and even the ones I don't know.
I have followed instructions (2 of them) offered without success.
If it is so hard do fix it, well I believe the best solution is to get rid of Messenger and download another program. Plenti of them!
With so many of us in trouble, what else can we do? I am sorry, but Messenger should make a better program!.

I just followed the 3 steps outlined above by jhaglund and congratulate you on getting me sorted out too!! I've been trying since late last week to get this problem fixed, and just found this forum and by following each of the steps (was a bit slow to do it I admit...) it really worked and I now have all my Microsoft Office applications working again. Many thanks from Paul Seawind. I also acknowledge Niemiro.

Wow then it seems like you are one of the lucky few. It sounds to me like a very bad problem to have.

It is not so very bad, because there are fixes. Also, the C++ redists will fix it for the vast majority of people. I can get about a 90% success rate for sxs errors. The C++ redists are the fix for almost every generic case of this, but not every case is generic.

The error code I would call a bad problem to have is 1935. That error code has very, very many sub error codes, all meaning completely different things, with only one or two with any sort of known solution, and those have very low success rates, and it is hard to diagnose. I reacon that I can only get about a 5% success rate on that error, hence it has been the focus of much of my research time, although as yet no magic cures, just a better understanding, better diagnosis, and one new fix for a very small percentage of users.

Hi I have the same message 'the application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect' I first got the message a few days ago after my wife downloaded 'citrix' so she could work from home!!!! Anyway I can open explorer, adobe etc. I have downloaded the C++ files on another computer (as I cant get online) and transferred them via usb drive but when I try to open the self extracting file I get the 'side by side' error message on this also. I'm stuck PLEASE HELP someone!! I have tried to remove the citrix thing but it says its already removed (but still shows on the list?) I have an SXS trace if this helps....it shows a syntax error (See below)

INFO: Manifest Definition Identity is Microsoft.Windows.IsolationAutomation.ProxyStub,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df",type="win32",version="1.0.6000.16386".
ERROR: Line 18: XML Syntax error.
ERROR: Activation Context generation failed.

Have also tried to recover to before my wifes instilation but it wont let me!
Can anyone help? How do I load those c++ patches/files when I cant even open them???? MILLIONS OF THANKS IN ANTICIPATION OF SOME BRAINBOX WHO WILL TELL ME HOW TO GET OUT OF THIS ONE! Kind regards Paul

Hello, I have received this error as well. Recently I had this error, and I did a system restore, and the error stopped. However, over the weekend, after I had shut down Windows Live Messenger, it had started again. The only thing that I can think of that I did was uninstall old Adobe software, and install new. I have all of the Visual C + files that are listed. It isn't something that can be repaired by sfc /scannow. I tried that already. I also tried an installation repair, but that didn't work (even did a system restore again recently, but that didn't work).

I think that it must be something in Windows, and not in the Windows Live programs. I use Windows Live Messenger frequently, and don't really like up the msn web popup version in hotmail. I have not had any error pop-up in any MS Office program.

I will try downloading Windows updates again, but last time it didn't help.
If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.

My Computer

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the visual c++ files.

I really have no idea but if you search here for that error you'll find quite a few other threads on it.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the visual c++ files.

Do you think that would help? What might cause those files to possibly be corrupted, if that is the issue?

There is no need to uninstall them first. This error (99% of the time) is not due to those being corrupted, but one never having been installed. Since you don't know which one is missing, install them all and the problem goes away. That is the theory behind this fix.

Actually, I had all of them installed except 2010. I downloaded and installed it, but it didn't work. I even tried both only removing windows live messenger, and removing windows live essentials twice. The second time, I had re-installed 2008 before re-installing WLM. However, it still didn't work.

In fact, I had ran the scan now thing at one point, and it didn't work either. I even used some sort of program for cleaning up windows more than Microsoft"s program.

Another time, I even tried uninstalling messenger, and re-installing a previous version. But with that, it opened the program but would not login.

Now I am not sure what to do, as I have went through many suggested solutions and still have not seen an actual solution. It seems like this first occurred after a windows update, and secondly after a program installation. This never happened with previous versions. Does anybody have any other suggestions?

Hi Plantine,

It would be best to start your own thread :) That way the help you receive is specific to you. Someone will tend to your problem once you've done that.

I did this to resolve it:
Click Start Menu.
Click on Control Panel.
Under "Programs" click on "Uninstall a program".
Find Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable and uninstall it (as well as every other visual C++)
Uninstall Windows Live (How to Manually Uninstall Windows Live Messenger Windows Live Messenger - Manually Uninstall - Windows 7 Forums)
Download the Visual C++ 2008 redistributable and the Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Service Pack. (and any other visual c++ that you may need to replace)
Reinstall Windows Live Messenger
Install it.
Reinstall Microsoft Visual Basic C++ Redistributable 2008 and 2008 (SP1) and other ones. For me, I deleted all of them, 2005-2010, but only re-installed 2005 and 2008. I didn't not originally have 2010, and I think that the programs did not have dependencies on 2010. For this thing, I also had checked the log that it mentions.

Following this, I believe that it worked. However, I had noticed on one site a recommendation to upgrade Messenger Plus which was still installed, but no longer compatible with Windows Live Messenger. I upgraded that too, but I am not sure that it is really very useful.. So, if you have that program, but think that it may not be useful anymore, try also uninstalling that.
