How to Get Out of Reduced Functionality Mode in Vista

information   Information
This will show you how to get out of Reduced Functionality Mode if you did not activate Vista within the 30 day activation trial period and the period has expired, Vista determines or thinks that it is installed on a different computer than it was originally activated on, or you have a non-genuine version of Vista.

For more information, see: Microsoft Help and Support: KB925582 Article and Genuine Microsoft Software

warning   Warning
Microsoft no longer provides support for OEM copies of Vista. If you have one of these, then you must contact the OEM, instead of Microsoft in this tutorial, to activate your OEM Vista. OEM contact information should be included in the documentation that came with your computer or OEM Vista installation CD/DVD package.

METHOD ONE
If you Have Vista SP1/SP2 Installed

NOTE: For more information, see: Windows Genuine Advantage : Taking the next step with Windows Vista SP1
1. Whe you logon to Vista, you will see this message with a window with the options below if Vista is running in reduced functionality mode. To use Vista again, select the option (see table below) in the window that you want to do. (See screenshot below table)
NOTE: You will have to wait 15 seconds for the Activate Later option to not be grayed out.

I hate it when that happens.
Usually a reboot cures it.
If not, then try rearming the license -
open an Elevated Command prompt window (use the same method)
at the prompt, type
cscript slmgr.vbs /rearm

wait for it to finish (hopefully without an error!) - and reboot twice.

Still the same error, not enough quota.

Is there anyway that I can bypass this not enough quota error? I can't seems to perform any task other than to key in my product key which in this case is clearly not going to work.

Any idea why is the product key that was on the COA sticker is deemed invalid? I don't get it because an OEM license is surely can't be used by another computer which nullify the possibility of being used by another user?

My Computer

Sorry - I was obviously even later to the party than I thought :(
Try this - the Licensing Store may be corrupt.

Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.
1) Open an Internet Browser window.
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type: net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Restart your computer twice.
You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).

Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

I tried to recover my operating system and I can now access to a normal windows, but for a certain period of time before it goes into the reduced functionality mode again I guess. I tried this but when it came to step 7, it says this file was not found?
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

The rest of the function can work properly. However I think the main problem is my product key, it keeps saying it's an invalid key, but how is it possible since it's oem licensed and is on the sticker of COA?

I just realised that there appears to have been no attempt to check file system integrity?

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size
of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally
(possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC
SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on the Start button
type in the Search box
CMD.EXE
right-click on the only file that is found
Select Run as Administrator
- the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Post an MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

Well, we've achieved something, at least - the activation has tripped back into grace period, and is showing as genuine (which doesn't mean a lot, during the grace period)
please try validating at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate - what happens?

You should attempt an offline SFC - it should be able to get around the problems the online one is having....
Reboot the computer, and tap the F8 key until you get the advanced boot menu up - one option should be 'Repair your computer'. Pick that one.
Log into your normal account.
You'll get a set of options - pick the Command Prompt one.
At the command prompt, type DIR D:\
- if we're lucky this will bring up a listing of your normal C: drive contents, including the Program Files folder(s) and the Windows folder.
If not, try E:\ (etc. until you get the right letter)
then type the following command

sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the letter you found above.
Wait for the command to complete. (make a note of the response!).
Once it has, type EXIT and the pick the option to reboot.

Post another MGADiag report

(bedtime for me - back tomorrow)

I tried the validate option but it is not showing any result after a 5-10 minutes wait? Not sure if I have to wait longer though.

sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<drive>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the letter you found above.

I type the exact command above or do I substitute the <drive> with other?

My Computer

<yawn - sorry!>
it should only take a few seconds for the validation to complete.
Yes, you need to change the <drive> into the letter you found that brought up your Windows and Programs folders using the DIR command
so if the working Windows folder was found using DIR Q:\
then you'd use the command
sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=Q:\ /OFFWINDIR=Q:\Windows

(I've expanded the spaces above to make it a little more obvious where they are)

I've tried the method but it won't work. With "c" "d" or "x". I will post a screen shot below.

You found the Windows files on D:\ ??
In that case your problem is that you got the wrong drive assignment
your command was
sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=<D>:\ /OFFWINDIR=<D>:\Windows

while it should have been

sfc /scannow /OFFBOOTDIR=D:\ /OFFWINDIR=D:\Windows

Please try again

My windows file is located in c:\ but the command prompt shows something like x:\windows\system32 so I tried both. I did keyed in the correct command without <>, but it just won't work. See screenshot 2 and 3.

My Computer

This is when I keyed in using the x:\ drive.
The arguments passed to sfc are invalid. The offline windows directory specified points to the online system.

This is the c:\ drive.
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

That's the point I'm trying to make - as far as I can see, you never used the D:\....
option.

PLease try it again.

Let me rephase things in an effort to make it clear.
When you use the Recovery Environment, the C: drive is almost never the same one as the original C:drive.
The X: drive is the one that is currently in use by the Recovery Environment as it's working system drive - and the system re-orders the drives into the order in which they are on the hard disk. Almost always, the first partition is either the Reserved (Boot) partition, or the manufacturer's Recovery partition, and this may or may not have a Windows folder, but will be called C:
the next partition is usually what would normally be called the System drive C: drive - and the drive letter has changed to D:

If for whatever reason, there is another partition prior to the System one, then the System drive will become E:

That's as far as most systems can go because of a limit of 4 primary partitions to any drive, but it is actually possible to have many more drive-letters prior to the System drive you need to access.

Once you boot back into Windows proper, the drive letter assignments go back to normal (unless you've done somehting to them while in the recovery environment.)
