Vista SP1 won't install.

First, let me clarify, I do this stuff every day, all day. But I am almost out of ideas. So here I am, seeking a fresh set of eyes and ideas.

I have here, what was an XP machine. Following the upgrade path to Windows 7, I've upgraded to Vista Home first. And now that Vista is on it, I've been trying to get SP1 installed so that I can upgrade it to Windows 7. Clean install is not an option. We're trying to maintain all of the currently installed programs.

I have attempted SP1 install from Windows Updates, which says successful, but it is not. I've downloaded the stand alone and tried that, which gets to Stage 3 of 3 100% and then reverts. I've found many suggestions online, of which none have panned out. SURT finds no problems.

Attached is a zip file containing a few logs (cbs, surt, wu). Anyone here game at helping figure this out?

In that case my advice is to stick with XP. In-place upgrades from Vista to Windows 7 nearly always fail in any case, and it certainly does not bode well that the Vista SP1 standalone installer (which has no prerequisites) is failing. Edit: If you're including a CBS log, your Vista media must be corrupt.

I didn't know that you could upgrade from XP to vista. Have you turned off antivirus? Have you tried google?

Too late for that. Already upgraded to Vista. I've been in the repair business for 18+ years now. And have done many XP - Vista - 7 upgrades without fail or issues. This particular one has just gotten the better of me.

I've been all over Google. There are a few reasons and solutions for the revert at 100%. But none I have found apply to this. In the CBS log you can see this -

KB938371 appears to maybe be the culprit. So I've attempted to reinstall it. But then get a message that it does not apply. So after a few registry changes pertaining to this KB, I was able to get it to reinstall. But, SP1 still fails and the same error persists in the CBS log.

You mean you didn't make an image of the XP system with software so irreplaceable that "clean install is not an option"?

I have a mirror copy of the original drive. Clean install is not an option because the customer has a lot of software installed. Upgrading allows him to keep his software. Some of it he can replace, some of it he can not. I'm in the process of a clean install of Vista to another machine, updating it to the point that SP1 would be the next update. Then I'm going through manually to compare files and registry entries. Long process, but maybe I'll find something amiss. My reason for posting here, is mostly for fresh ideas. Sometimes when working a problem for too long, you get tunnel vision lol.

You can get a Vista ISO which includes SP2 from EX_Brit if that would help.

I wouldn't have checked for updates at all because the SP1 standalone installer has no prerequisites.

The log references an update. I would try manually installing it. Download Update for Windows Vista (KB938371) from Official Microsoft Download Center

That's the update that is already installed, and can not be uninstalled through normal means. I see where CBS log indicates it's not successfully installed during sp1 install. I've already attempted a stand alone install of it, says its not needed. So I changed the install state in the registry, and was able to get it to install again. But same error in the cbs log when installing sp1. Stage 3 of 3 100% and reverts.
