what's the best antivirus that works with the extended kernel? ive been doing research into this recently and can't find anything that would work properly (or won't work at all) so my question is are there any antivirus known to work with the extended kernel if anyone could help with this it would be much appreciated

Well, I use Norton 360 and Malwarebytes on my plain jane Vista x64 so I don't know why they wouldn't work in extended kernel.

Frankly, those who are concerned about online security are best advised to abandon legacy versions of Windows because only Windows 10 and 11 still receive security updates from Microsoft!

It might be interesting if someone who is actually running Vista x64 with extended kernel would try to install a free trial of Malwarebytes Premium 3.5.1 (the five-year-old version used by wither 3) and let us know what happens. (It might be wise to have an up-to-date image to restore from in case your system becomes unusable!) Of course Malwarebytes Free was not a real-time antivirus at all: Merely an on-demand PUP removal tool (which is all that old versions of Malwarebytes were ever really good for, although I was never able to convince wither 3 of that). An on-demand scanner would probably be much less likely to cause trouble if you are deliberately running a hacked OS.

As you know, I'm using the "paid" version of Malwarebytes Premium which the people at Malwarebytes assure me is full anti-virus. The only thing I don't have enabled is Ransomware protection and I don't know if I can enable it for free (not going to mess with it). About the only thing that it bitches at is a number of Google files which it identifies as trojans when I launch Google 360. I think those are related to Google Play and some other Google programs. Either way, I haven't had a virus or any other type of malware that's affected my system operation for about 5 years (maybe longer).

Yes I do know, so why are you going off topic? You do not use the extended kernel and do not know if Malwarebytes Premium 3.5.1. will work with the extended kernel. As legacyfan already knows, hardly any antivirus will work with the extended kernel! If your Malwarebytes is a “full antivirus,” then you should not be running it simultaneously with Norton. Imacri reported years ago that Premium interfered with Norton (which came as no surprise to me), and therefore downgraded to Malwarebytes Free.
The only thing I don't have enabled is Ransomware protection and I don't know if I can enable it
As I have explained before, you cannot enable Ransomware Protection because it never supported Windows XP or Vista.
About the only thing that it bitches at is a number of Google files which it identifies as trojans when I launch Google 360.
There is no “Google 360.” Last year you downloaded Extreme Explorer 360 directly from a Chinese website (which is not something that I would ever suggest). Has it occurred to you that your trusted security software might actually be correct about those files? Did Norton react at all when you installed 360? Of course if you get rid of 360, there won’t be a halfway decent browser on your vanilla Vista - which is precisely why most posts are about extended kernel these days.

What I have is 360 Chrome Browser. There's also a Secure Browser and Extreme Browser. Don't remember downloading the latter. If it was one of those, I'd guess the former since the installation file is 360cse.
As far as I know, Norton and Malwarebytes Premium aren't interfering with one another.
The files that Malwarebytes bitches about may actually be some kind of trojan but they aren't affecting my system.

Sorry no one here was able to answer your question. @Joadix100 actually uses the extended kernel and might be using Microsoft Security Essentials 4.4.304.0, although he hasn’t mentioned it specifically since December 2021. You posted in his old thread about MSE yesterday, and it looks like you tried MSE yourself in March 2021. Nobody knows how much longer definitions will be provided - but that is also true of Malwarebytes, Norton, etc. Those companies are actually violating Microsoft security dogma by continuing to issue definitions signed with SHA-1 for the benefit of Windows XP diehards, and that won’t go on forever.

All this stuff is interesting. I turned on Windows Updater for one of my Windows 7 systems and, after a day, it came up with one of those Microsoft malicious software updates. I decided to install it. After half an hour, Windows was still trying to create a restore point so I cancelled it. Enough for Win 7 updates. We already know that won't work in Vista.

In case I wasn’t clear in post #3, a five-year-old version of Malwarebytes Premium would be a waste of money even if it works with extended kernel (which is unknown), but you could test a “free trial” if you wish. As you may have noticed, the extended kernel users at MSFN are generally not very interested in antivirus. Those that were generally gave up trying long ago (except the one user who has already recommended Kaspersky to you).

Since Malwarebytes is keeping the definitions up to date, I don't know why it would be a waste of money.

Well legacyfan reports that Avast Free 18.8 is working fine on Vista x64 with extended kernel! Perhaps the current (October 2022) extended kernel is not as hostile to antivirus products as earlier versions were. I would also recommend Avast 18.8 to anyone running vanilla Vista (except wither 3 of course). Nobody knows how much longer definitions will be provided, but that’s true of every legacy product that’s been mentioned here. After Norton was spun off by Symantec, they later merged with Avast/AVG, so those are all the same corporation now, and there is no reason to think that one gets better definitions than another.
