Unable To Install Antivirus Software On New Laptop

Hi all:
I am hoping someone could help me with this issue. I bought a brand new Compaq Presario A909US laptop yesterday and I am having trouble installing spybot, adware, and avg.
When the downloads are complete I get either one of two error messages:
'...is not a valid win32 application'
OR
'The set up files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the software.'
I have attempted to install these programs at least three times and still get the above messages.
Since the laptop is brand new, i doubt there is a virus on it.
here are the specs:
windows vista home premium
Intel (R) Pentium (R) Dual-CPU T2330 (1.60GHz)processor
2038MB
32 bit operting system
If someone could help me I would greatly appreciate it!

Reinstall the software and then uninstall it.

First, delete the files you have downloaded and empty the recycle-bin.
Then open Internet Explorer, click on the "Tools" button in the upper bar and click on "Internet Options".
A window will popup, under Browser history, click on the "delete" button.
Another window will popup, click on "Delete".
Download again your progs and try to install them again.

Does it work?

Huh?

Disable UAC first. Disable the firewall. Reinstall all the products and then add/remove them. Reboot. Do a clean install with UAC disabled.

Hi Michael

Sidney1st is asking him to redownload the programs again due to this message the OP stated he received in the 1st post. I agree that this is also the first thing he needs to do.

I also just ran across this statement from Microsoft regarding the "not a valid Win32 application" message:

Microsoft is aware of this issue and is working on a fix. As several people have observed, this is konwn to affect Excel 2007, Access 2007, Snipping Tool, and Windows Media Player on Vista SP1. The fix is to either exit as many apps as possible that you are running (e.g. Outlook), and then load the app (and then you can reload the apps you had running), or a logoff/logon will clear it up for a while (days/weeks). The error messages are confusing, but the problem is neither an invalid application file nor insufficient system resources. It only affects certain applications, and typically only after the user has been logged in for an extended period of time.

I read from many users that this error also went away after rebooting and running the installation again.

Not a valid 32-bit app means it has a 16-bit installer file. It will not install in a 64-bit OS. Upgrade the software to a newer version. Call them to make sure its 64-bit compatible 32-bit code.

It also means Corrupted download.

Usually a corrupted download would be a DLL or other file error.

Depends on the installer the setup program used but you never usually see a dll or file error on a corrupted installer since Windows throws either exceptions listed in the quote above.
