Disable onboard video card?

Hi; just installed an ATI 4850 card in a Gigabyte GA-MA78G-DS3H Mobo, [AMD 64x2 6000+]. The Graphics Experience Index jumped from 3.6 to 5.9. (I don't do any high-end gaming and was focusing mainly on HDTV resolution, but it looks impressive on paper) Mobo has ATI 3200 onboard video.

Question is: "should I disable the onboard video in the bios, or leave it alone?" Current settings apparently work fine, but is there an advantage to disabling the onboard... or is it one of those , 'leave well enough alone' thingies?

its not a problem, infact catalyst control center is crossfiring your card with the onboard one, its not a problem and if you disable it you may get a performance drop

Thank you MrNeeds for the reply. I have noted that the lousy '6TO4 Adapter' error has popped up just since the new card install.

I always suspected it was because of the US Robotics telephone modem I use [maybe not quite compatible with VISTA]. It does not seem to bother anything but I decided to try to get rid of it awhile back and nothing I have seen addresses a 'fix' for it. I finally got rid of it by reloading VISTA (not a clean install), and it stayed gone for a couple weeks until now that it has returned!
Anyone here know how to get rid of the cursed '6TO4' annoyance??

i have a rule with computers, unless i use it it doesnt need to be there, thats why I never understood why people bought computers with floppy drives. but none the less people did, my advice with this is unless you use it, remove it, if you dont know how, you could just disable it by right clicking it in device manager there^^^

The BUGGER is self-perpetuating [cannot permanently disable or remove it] It just 'pops back up on next reboot. I REALLY thought I had rid myself of it and it came back with the installation of the HD4850.

6TO4 is a website configuration, its designed to use ipv6 connection for ipv4 configurations. something is configured incorrectly in your system, network wise.

Well floppy disks only really became obsolete with Vista, as with XP you needed one to load SATA/RAID HDD drivers

What Router do you have, as only a handful of home routers support 6to4 relay.

its called hybrid crossfire, using your discrete onboard gpu for everyday applications and browsing and utilising the gaming card for gaming, it is enabled automatically.

Getting my two bits worth in, I've installed about three new graphics cards in the past, and the instructions always said to uninstall the onboard system then shut down.
Install the new card, change over the monitor connections then reboot, using the supplied CD to install the new drivers.
Always made sense to me.

notice how BOTH cards are listed in device manager , the guy here has only one and if you read on it seems the option has to be turned on in control panel first , maybe thats all he needs to do , i know with NV its not enabled by default either

Not to create an argument but “ATI Hybrid CrossFireX” does not apply to a 4850. There’s no crossfire working on that board.
Looking at ATI’s crossfire compatibility chart - http://game.amd.com/us-en/content/images/crossfirex/CF_combo_chart_Nov08.jpg, only the 2400 & 3400 series cards can do “Hybrid CrossfireX on a 780G chipset, which is what his MB has.

Likewise, Gigabyte’s brochure on that MB states you need a 2400 or 3400 series card. - GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Overview - GA-MA78G-DS3H (rev. 1.0)

And for what it's worth, the 4850 will give a WEI score of 5.9 - I have one. Good card BTW.

As a side note, It would have been nice to Crossfire my 3870 with my 4850...but good ol ATI wanting to make the bucks says nooooo

No - MB's with intergrated video cards supporting hybrid crossfire with a qualifying single video card - hybrid crossfire is automatic.

Now if we take a board that doesn’t have an integrated video and you use two cards to do crossfire, then yes it needs to be enabled in the software (Catalyst Control Center)

One other scenario - If you have an x2 card, like a 4870x2, the card automatically runs in Crossfire mode as a single GPU. However pair two of these, and again, Crossfire needs to be enabled via software because now you’re running two 4870x2’s

The best way to understand this is if you have to install the bridge, then you have to enable crossfire via the catalyst control center for crossfire to work.

I suggest for you to leave it alone, it can trigger problems with Wireless LAN or Ethernet LAN., It can also trigger problems with domains and workgroups. As for your problem I say you can disable it. If it causes problems for anything, Enable it. If you can't do a System Restore. I am a computer expert, but I never had this kind of question. I might be wrong...

what does this have to do with graphics cards?
to fix this issue, simply unplug your modem. its a router configuration.

I see the point of your questions, but in the mind of a "computer illiterate" being in the presence of VISTA Wizards [no pun intended] you must concede that if the dreaded 6TO4 appeared when the new video card was installed it would be reasonable that the card may have generated it for some reason?

Thanks for the GREAT replies on the cards... I shall try to digest the data. PS: The onboard was disabled and it is working fine.:D

Radeon 3450

Just looked at the TOM's link and wish I would have known that a long time ago (could have still had marbles in my pocket). It appears that the 3450 cross-firing with the onboard 3200 would have been quite adequate for my needs. I will go back and study the article more.
'Will keep that in mind on the next computer I build that will become my 'base' unit as the current one graduates to my video entertainment unit.
