Hi WeeJokey,

Theres some more infomation about the 0x000000101 Error here: Bug Check 0x101: CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT

Basically it means one of your processor cores is malfunctioning (on its way out)

I agree that a 0x101 bugcheck could mean the CPU is going or indicate other hardware issues. However, another possibility is a "deadlock". Multiple threads have areas of code locked - but it turns out that one is waiting on the other to finish and release their respective lock - which never happens... looping occurs, CPU can't respond in the time given so system BSODs.

It may be worth the trouble to produce a full kernel dump and issue windbg kd> !locks command to see if resource or object contention exists. It may be a bad driver caught in a loop.

Run the Vista Driver Verifier (DV) and see if it flags any drivers. At worst the DV will cause a BSOD and hopefully name the guilty party - or make it easier to find it in the stack text of the resulting mini kernel dump. Any driver updates or Windows Updates recently?

START | type cmd.exe | right-click on cmd.exe uptop under programs | Run as Administrator | type verifier & hit enter - the Verifier screen will appear | do the following:
Code:
[B]1. Select 2nd option - Create custom settings (for code developers)[/B]
[B]2. Select 2nd option - Select individual settings from a full list.[/B]
[B]3. Check the boxes[/B]
[B] • Special Pool [/B]
[B] • Pool Tracking [/B]
[B] • Force IRQL checking[/B]
[B]4. Select last option - Select driver names from a list [/B]
[B]5. Click on the Provider heading - sorts list by Provider[/B]
[B]6. Check ALL boxes where Microsoft is not the Provider[/B]
[B]7. Click on Finish [/B]
[B]8. Re-boot[/B]
If the Driver Verifier (DV) finds a violation, it will result in a BSOD - usually a 0xc4 - but not always. It will verify your drivers 1-by-1, so it will take some time. To see the status of the Driver Verifier, bring up an elevated command prompt, type verifier - but this time select the last option on the first screen - "Display information about the currently verified drivers..". If you find your system to unstable (the verifier generally consumes CPU & RAM), turn it off" (verifier /reset) and re-boot.

Hi. . .

The Forum Moderator dmex may very well be right on the money with the CPU. I would defer on the hardware end as I always look at software 1st b/c that is my area of interest. I would not even attempt to do that which was suggested - I just don't know my way around hardware. There are no guarantees and plenty of opinions when it comes to BSODs.

I was in a similar position as you about 3 months ago when I bought a Vista x64 HP laptop. It froze w/in 24 hours. I returned it and the next 2 laptops as well - all within 1 month. They said a re-install of Vista would be good because the current one was "adjusting poorly to the new Intel P7350 CPU..." and that "..Vista needs a few re-installs ... to get it right.." !!! These were the same salesman (national US chain) that told me "64-bit is much better than 32-bit because it holds twice as much". I later saw that in an on-line ad for the same company. Unreal.

Given your system is < 1 week old, I fear they will claim BSODs your fault due to software installations (non-Vista). If you call or return it, I think they will just re-install Vista and send it back. They must have tested it - at least I hope they did.

If you want to run a dozen or so reports and files, I will be glad to take a look at them along with all dump files - current or future. Your call. Here are some of the items I usually gather from BSOD OPs:

Please note: In case you are unfamiliar - to get to an elevated Administrative level - command/"DOS" prompt -
START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe above under programs | select "Run as Administrator" - to copy/paste into the DOS screen, RIGHT-click at the very top of the black DOS screen, select Edit, select Paste - you may have to hit enter after the paste

1. Create a new folder in your Documents folder - call it Vistax64_Support - if OK w/ you.

2. Download Live SysInternals AutoRuns from Microsoft TechNet - SAVE it to the Vistax64_Support folder - http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe
-- Go to your documents folder, RIGHT-click on autoruns.exe and select run as admin. allow it to scan (status bottom-left). Save it as an ARN file (default file extension)

3. msinfo32 saved as an NFO file - START | type msinfo32 - hit enter. Save - NFO file default format

4. Vista health report - START | type perfmon /report & hit enter - 60 seconds, report will be displayed in IE7 or FFox web browser. Save as an HTML or HTM file.

5. dxdiag64 text file - START | type dxdiag - enter. DirectX Kernel viewer will appear - click on "run as x64" - bottom of screen - save as a text file

6. Bring up the elevated cmd/DOS screen - paste the following into it - 1 command at a time (11 total + copy mini dumps):

Code:
[B]whoami /ALL > "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support\whoami.txt"[/B]

[B]driverquery /v > "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support\drivers1.txt"[/B]

[B]driverquery /si > "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support\drivers2.txt"[/B]
Code:
[B]wevtutil qe Application /c:70000 /rd:true /f:text > "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support\evtx_app.txt"[/B]
Code:
[B]wevtutil qe System /c:70000 /rd:true /f:text > "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support\evtx_app.txt"[/B]
Code:
[B]ipconfig /all > "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support\ipconfigall.txt"[/B]

[B]systeminfo /fo list > "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support\systeminfo.txt"[/B]

[B]set > "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support\environvar.txt"[/B]
Code:
[B]Reg Query HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall /s > "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support\uninstall_HKLM.txt"[/B]
Code:
[B]Reg Query HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall /s > "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support\uninstall_HKCU.txt"[/B]

Code:
[B]Reg Query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components" /s > "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support\uninstall_HKLM2.txt"[/B]

Code:
[B]copy %windir%\minidump\*.* "%userprofile%\documents\Vistax64_Support"[/B]

.

Please go to your documents folder and zip up the entire Vistax64_Support folder and attach to your next post. If you have questions or a command doesn't work - please let me know.

Hi. . .

Interesting results.

Did you ever install a program directly from an external source - DVD, USB, ext HDD? This may explain the invalid path and unnamed file - as it not there now to be found. It could be a path with an invalid character in it.

I see that a lock is mentioned - but only by CPU 1. Why not the others? If CPU 1 found it to be locked, what has a lock on it and why did CPU 1 differentiate it and not the other 3?

The Event Viewer may hold a clue here. The system and app logs were included in my last post

wevtutil qe Application. . . .
wevtutil qe System. . . .

WERCON may also have a lead (msinfo32 saved as an NFO file).

This could also be NVidia.

CPU ?

Hi. . .

Thanks for reports.

In my last post, I was asking if you did any program installs from the DVD or USB... apologies if not clear.

I started through the files you attached - so far I came upon the following in dxdiag:
Code:
** E D I T E D * *

 Name: Creative SB X-Fi

Device ID: PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_000B&SUBSYS_00431102&REV_03\4&3B7303FA&0&00A8

   Driver: C:\Windows\system32\CT1MGM.ROM, [COLOR=red]2/25/2000[/COLOR] 12:49:36, 1048576 bytes
   Driver: C:\Windows\system32\CT2MGM.SF2, [COLOR=red]9/22/1999 [COLOR=black]23:18:38, 2167684 bytes[/COLOR]
[COLOR=red]   [/COLOR][COLOR=black]Driver: C:\Windows\system32\default4.sfm,[/COLOR] 1/3/2002[/COLOR] 15:44:16, 59 bytes
   Driver: C:\Windows\system32\default8.sfm, [COLOR=red]1/3/2002[/COLOR] 15:44:16, 59 bytes
   Driver: C:\Windows\system32\default.sfm,[COLOR=red] 1/3/2002[/COLOR] 15:44:16, 59 bytes

   Driver: C:\Windows\Temp\ctpxst32.exe, , 0 bytes
   Driver: C:\Windows\Temp\cttele32.dll, , 0 bytes

.

Please see if these files are in \windows\system32 and if dated as above. The 2 in the \windows\temp folder are odd b/c -0- bytes. I have not linked them to any errors at this time, but the dates caught my attention.

Regards. . .

That is what I thought, too. 1999?

In the drvquery report, every driver is listed as loading from \windows\system32\drivers - except 2. One is a Microsoft Vista log file driver (clfs.sys) and is loaded from \windows\system32 - which is normal.

The other is not so normal given the # of queries I have seen. It is a kernel mode driver - uxddrv.sys - loaded from the folder c:\pcspro
Code:
uxddrv Dynamically loaded Uxd Dynamically loaded Uxd Kernel
        Manual 24/11/2005 09:14:50
\??\C:\pcspro\uxddrv.sys 416 bytes

I am unable to find information on this driver at this time. Do you have a folder named c:\pcspro? Please run this command from an elevated admin cmd/DOS prompt -

Code:
[B][COLOR=blue]dir c:\pcspro /a /s > %temp%\0.txt & start notepad %temp%\0.txt[/COLOR][/B]

A notepad will appear - paste contents into post if not too large; else attach text file.

Hi. . .

They left alot of baggage behind! But other OEMs leave much more.

Not sure what uxddrv.sys does, it is in the listing from your last post w/ 30 Oct 2008 file date:
Code:
30/10/2008 12:18 2,336 uxddrv.sys

The linkage date is 24 Nov 2005 as driverquery shows:
Code:
Dynamically loaded Uxd Kernel
24/11/2005 09:14:50
\??\C:\pcspro\uxddrv.sys

I went through the Event Viewer System log and found the 1st ~300 entries to be from the OEM:
» 9 Oct 2008 -16.53.32 - clearing of Event logs
» " " 16.53.47 - system shutdown initiated
» 11 Oct - 17.18.20 - System back up; Windows/driver loading continues
» " " 17.20.42 - system restart
» " " 17.27.48 - events end

» 13 Nov 2008 - 16.28.01 - 1st event logged after your initial boot

The there are 1000's of these errors:
Code:

This is the type of install I was looking for earlier - from drive d:

About 1 hour later:

@ 21:12:24 on 13/11/2008 - BSOD - but not with a 0x101 -

0xd1 = DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL = a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory when it should not have (process IRQL that was too high). A 0xd1 is usually caused by drivers that have used improper addresses. Parm 4 0xa9cb700a is the address of the object that referenced the memory address in parm 1 - 0x0 - an invalid address.

Finding all of this makes even less of a case for return to OEM in my opinion. The logs show the OEM running w/o incident. Then you receive it and for 5 hours the system is up & functional, installing 100+ Windows Updates, drivers, etc... before the 1st 0xd1 BSOD. However, there are the DCOM errors. How or if they contribute here, I don't know. Given the invalid path results from the CPU test, I think the manufacturer will re-format, re-install Vista, test the system, possibly install different graphic drivers and probably find nothing wrong, leaving you without your system for a time and a potential £35 fee for return. I don't know the comany, but doubt they will invest the time as you and I have here to investigate the matter.

Assuming this is the OEM website -
PCSPECIALIST.CO.UK - Custom PCs, Custom Computers, Custom PC, Custom Built Computers, Gaming PC

Per #3, for a 0xd1:
"Error code 000000d1 – Again, this could be a graphics card problem. Please try downloading the latest graphics drivers (Advanced Micro Devices Inc. or Welcome to NVIDIA - World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies) and if these don’t work, please contact us. "

Per #5 - Returns:
"5. If we agree to have a computer back acting on your advice of a possible fault, and once we receive the computer back, there is no fault found, you will be charged £35 inc VAT to cover our cost of collecting the computer from yourself and returning the computer to you. We do not currently charge for labour costs. The same will apply to computers with faulty hardware not originating from our company, and also for computers that have developed a fault due to being adjusted by anyone other than us. Due to previous experience, we will not dispatch the computer back to you until this money has been paid in full if a charge is incurred. "
.

One way that may help in the decision making process is to re-install Vista yourself - invoke system recovery. It will take about an hour of system time. Then re-run the CPU test b4 you add anything to the system and see if the invalid path error is there. Did you purchase the kb, mouse, etc... (in the services mentioned above) from the OEM?

One other item that I have seen repeatedly in un-solved mysterious BSODs for months now are the system services PnkBstrA & B. They have something to do with anti-cheat gaming, so I am told. I have never linked them conclusively to a BSOD, but being among the first to load they remain on my suspect list. What do they do for you? I am not a gamer myself.

Regards. . .

JC

hi jc

the siatek one is my gaming keyboard which i initally installed and it kept crashing the computer as soon as you preesed a button i tried to reinsatall it about 4 timesall with the same error reporting, most of the crashes have happened when this has not even been connected to the system(or drivers)awaiting response on this from saitek themselves as they can't explain it either.

This is the type of install I was looking for earlier - from drive d:

Code:
Install;file:D:\x86\Setup.exeDate: 2008-11-13T21:34:21.000 InstallDate REG_SZ 20081113InstallLocation REG_SZ C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty - World at War\InstallSource REG_SZ D:\

have i installed this wrong?that was the day cod 5 was released on pre order
the PnkBstrA & B. could well be the punkbuster files for anti cheating which may i add have not tampered with :D

in all that you have found do you think a reinstall will sort all this out?
as i have the vista disk here

Hi. . .

I didn't mean to insinuate that you did anything wrong w/ program install from d: drive. If legit DVD install (I don't mean vs. an illegal one) - should not be a problem at all. MS Office and many others are installed from DVD. I have come across many who have downloaded a program (whether freeware or not), have transferred it to DVD or USB then perform a direct install from it. The program installs, but records the fact it came from drive d:, e:, etc... and keeps searching for a module left behind on that drive - when in fact it is gone. That's all I meant.

As for PnkBstrA & B - as mentioned, I don't know anything about them or whether they could be contributing factor to BSODs - I have simply noticed their presence in many user service listings from BSOD threads. I don't even know what COD 5 is! I have heard the name and seen the modules, but if it were on a screen in front of me, I wouldn't know it. There is certainly nothing wrong with gaming, I just have never been one that could sit still long enough to enjoy it like many others. My time is primarily spent w/ my children 7,10,14,18, Technical Forums and my other career interest of Accounting Policy & Corporate Finance.

And YES, I would advise the re-install of Vista. It bothers me to still see the 0xd1 bugchecks come up as you now confirm earlier system crashes linked to the items that I found to be most likely related to those 0xd1 crashes. If all has been un-installed, why are the 0xd1 bugchecks still appearing? I also wonder if the 0xd1 and 0x101 are connected as they have been alternating in appearance in BSODs.

I think a fresh install followed by the CPU test would be the best course of action. If the test shows the same error after your re-install, then the error would be something I think should have been caught by the OEM. BTW, did I have the right link for the OEM? I ask as I would like to check their forums to see if any other reports of a similar error to yours.

Please let me know how re-install goes.

Any ? - just ask.

Regards. . .

EDIT: I would like any mini kernel dump files that you have as I would like to process them. This way, any post-Vista install BSOD dumps can be processed to see if same probable cause named.

They are in c:\windows\minidump - you will probably have to copy them out to another folder before zipping them up. Attach to net post. ... JC

pcspecialists then believe the CPU error related to the game install or RAM?

Hard to believe since CPU invalid path/filename error came from their own folder!

I'll send you my email for attachments.

Just curious - did they say they thoroughly tested system prior to shipping it?

Thanks. . .

Hi. . .

I received your email w/ attached zip file containing 8 mini kernel dumps. Thank you.

I immediately downloaded the zip file and was going to leave it until tomorrow (Mon), but got curious - wanted to see if there were 23 dump files to match the 23 BSODs that I found in the Event Viewer System Logs. I found just 8 dump files -- then noticed the dates -

What was the actual date that you accepted delivery of your new system?

The Event Viewer logs show an initial event where the system time changes from 11 Oct 2008 to 13 Nov 2008, just after logging an event calling for a time adjustment of +2854867 seconds. If my math is correct, that comes out to 33.042 days. That would make these two timestamps one in the same.

If you received and initially booted your new system on 13 November 2008, then the 3 BSODs occurred while the system was still with the OEM.

I processed the 1st dump file date = 3 October 2008:

Bugcheck = 0x101 (0x31, 0x0, 0x803d1120, 0x1), with the probable cause listed as "unknown image". The process running at the time of the crash was WSTPro.exe - found in the c:\pcspro folder listing in your previous post, with an interesting date of its own:
Code:
30/10/2008 12:12 2,835,968 WSTPro.exe

Dump Summary
Code:
Built by: 6001.18000.x86fre.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840

BugCheck 101, {31, 0, 803d1120, 1}

PROCESS_NAME: WSTPro.exe

The dump shows the NT Kernel and GUI win32k at work, but the bugcheck issued under NT.

Assuming this to be the very 1st BSOD, pcpros does appear to be involved somehow. So... What was the actual date that you accepted delivery of your new system?

More later - it is now 03:45am here! Go to go.
