Microsoft Security Essentials or Avira are my choice after my paid Nod32 runs out

As you can see most are ad-ons for Firefox but the host file will get rid of Double click and some other nasty ones.

Wish I had some answers for IE users but I only ever use it to download Firefox then remove all access to it.

EDIT: Note this is an answer to Americancritic and outlines just what I do.It is not intended to be used as a "what you should do" type thing. Everyone needs to do something though.

The host file, Anti keylogger and Ghostry have versions for IE that I know of. Some of the others may also.

They are both broswers. IE comes with Vista, FF has to be downloaded. Each has its own features. Which is best depends on the user.
The only way to know which is best for you is to try both. I have tried FF in the past and prefer IE 9 by quite a bit.

I went through some of the list you provided, it's like you have fort knock. Anyway if you have experance with the Ghostry, what does it do with this firefox. I know my daughter has that but what is it another browser. I have learned so many things from the wonderfull members here at the forum it looks like I am still learning, well oK just about evertyhing I have learned is from this forum. Do you think I should maybe get firefox.

What would be you recommendation for someone who wants to be protected to the max.

I use Kaspersky internet security and have never had a problem with them except here lately I had a trojan and malwarebytes got that on before my AV.

So I am open to what is the best and has it worked for the person giving the advice.

Hello Rich I remember asking you a while back if I should download IE9 and you told me not to at that time that it was still a couple of weeks away from being released. The only one I saw at that time was for beta is there different ones for different OS's and if so which one would be for my vista home premium. Thank you

Beta software sometime still has bugs and users help to find them.
Richard can recover from those but you may not be able to.
Now it is released there will be fewer bugs and should be fine.
As to your question about Ghostry. It blocks and removes any tracking cookies, note these are tracking cookies and not the cookies you use to log into sites with.
It will not get the LSO and DOM supercookies.
Ghostry has a version for Internet Explorer as do some of the others listed above.
If you are worried about your security you could set your network location to public as that increases security.
Then you could go to firewall in control panel and allow a program through Windows firewall,general and tick block all incoming connections.

EDIT: There is NO reason to ever allow third party cookies.
Block them in whichever browser you use.
They report to advertisers mainly

What Ilike has said is correct. Beta was in a testing phase, it may have had problems.
IE9 is now RTM, which means its the final release. I am using it and like it. If you are interested.
Downloads for Internet Explorer - Microsoft Windows
Make a system restore point first, in case you do not like it.

Sorry, forgot to mention another excellent tool I use.
JavaRA
Use it to remove all old versions of Java and download the latest version.
Java is often used by viruses to infect your computer.

Just a note about Firefox 4 i found that the search engine bundled with the default home page (about:home) appears to be dependent on DOM storage.

I found this after disabling DOM storage via the tutorial link Richc provided here;

that the (about:home) search engine no longer functioned

You can alternatively just use another home page if it is of concern to you.
