i am feeling like a real dummy here... i cant get anything to work for me... someone help!
PLEASE!

so its an acer aspire running vista home premium 32 with no updates ever...
its my step dads...
i cant get into system restore
it wont update
it wont let me into anything even tho i have told it i am the administrator and it says i am... it still says i need to be an administrator
it wont let me into anything that might let me add or remove a program
and i get this msg constantly about a badimage telling me that oledlg.dll is not valid or not compatible...
i realize now it is a malware problem of some kind
i didnt find it with nis or with malware bytes... i ran compufix

oh yeah... it also stalls out when downloading... it will get about 10% of what ever file i am getting then stall out...

i attached the log.txt that i got when i ran compufix....
i realize this note is all over the place.... i am at my wits end here...
if anyone knows the name of this virus or how i should go about getting rid of it... i would much appreciate it

thanks

Hello blassingame, welcome to Vista Forums!

Do you have data on the PC that you need to save or do you just want a way to get it running?

In the Windows start menu search box right click "Computer" and select "Manage" in the left pane select "Disk Management" and post a snip/screen shot of DM so we can see if you have a "Factory Recovery Partition" have a look at the tutorial at the link below to see how to do that.

Is there data on the PC that you need to save or do you just want to get it running right? There may be an option to do a "Factory Recovery" but doing that takes the PC back to a state like brand new and deletes all the data on the PC.

the problem is that acer gave him no disks... he bought it at wallyworld i think...

is it possible to do it with no software? or will it get rid of everything...

Have a look at this.

Be advised: you will lose any and all data on the PC.

Here is the standard Acer Recovery Instructions

1. Power on the machine
2. At the white ACER BIOS screen, hold the “Alt” key and press the “F10” key simultaneously to start Acer eRecovery
3. Once eRecovery has loaded, click “Restore to Factory Default Settings”
4. Click “OK” to continue
5. From here, the eRecovery process will update all the data on the C: drive and restore a fully functional factory image (approximately 10 minutes).
6. Once eRecovery has run, press “OK” to reboot unit

Run windows xp or even windows 7 on that machine. 800 megabytes of RAM(alone even 1 gig) wont run vista that well.

I think that this method will scan fastest as it is a boot scanner (maybe not the fastest but without hassle as the virus isnt running).
To scan your system, try a boot scanner called avg rescue cd which can be found here: AVG Rescue CD Cleans Your Infected Windows PC - Anti-Virus - Lifehacker

Boot into safe mode [repeatedly press f8 after POST screen (POST scrn is that screen that shows your OEM's logo when you first press the power button) dissapears].

Once in safe mode run this command at the elevated command prompt: sfc /scannow
It might take a few repititions if you have to do multiple fixes.

For the oledlg.dll refer to this forum post: PC Pitstop Forums > reinstall oledlg.dll?

Visit the microsoft support site for you to fix the windows update: Windows Update Not Working.

For the add and remove programs, consult this other thread: My "add or remove program" not working??

To fix the administrator problem, first get rid of malware and do all the fixes above, then make another administrator account and delete the current one (if you have any important files on your current account i suggest that you back them up).

If you have multiple antivirus programs, uninstall all of them except one.

And are you getting any BSoD's?

just an update really quick on what is going on...
i did the factory reboot because honestly my dad had nothing on his system... much less anything important... he uses it only to print a page every now and again proving someone is not on the do not sale list...
the reboot went txtbook and as soon as it finished i started updating... i noticed it is running terribly slow... i have not gotten that far yet... i thought i would let it update then start working on whatever problems it has...
it took over an hour to dl 450mb
and the intall process is slllloooowwww indeed... but... at least it is letting me do it...
thank you for the heads up again barefoot kid and also to katokato... seeing as i will still be trying to get it working squarely i imagine your heads up will come in handy...
a friend has a dell with netsky on it that i am going to try to attack next... so that boot disk will come in handy...

again... thanks for all the help...
i will let ya know when i figure out how to fix this slow problem...

i realize it will never be lightening fast.... but.. as of right now it is waaaay slow... unusually so...
800mb is plenty for what he needs it for... as a matter of fact the only reason i am even thinking about it is so that i may learn something in the process
thanks ed

Your choice. Microsoft's specs for Vista Home Premium state a minimum of 1GB of RAM, so "lightning fast" on your laptop may be the equivalent of just getting it running... :D
