How to Speed Up Vista Boot Up Time​

   Information

This will show you how to speed up just the boot up time to your desktop in Vista. Select the options that you feel comfortable doing and that apply to you.

   Note

You can also view the startup logs in Event Viewer (C:\Windows\system32\eventvwr.msc) under Applications and Services Logs, Microsoft, Windows, Diagnostics-Performance, and Operational. The logs will be in the middle to show you what ran at startup, how long it took, and more.

OPTION ONE

Change Time to Display List of Operating Systems

1. For how, see: How to Change the Default Boot Partition in Vista​

A) Uncheck this option if you do not dual boot to save 30 seconds.​

B) If you do dual boot, then select the default OS to boot into and lower the amount of time to wait for you to make a selection.​

OPTION TWO

Disable Create System Restore at Startup

NOTE: By default System Restore, if turned on, is scheduled to create a restore point at every system startup (At startup trigger) in Task Scheduler. If System Restore is turned on, then disabling this will save you time at startup.

OPTION THREE

Defrag the Registry

NOTE: Defragging the registry is like defragging the hard drive. It will help reorganize and condense the registry so it can be read quicker at startup. Usually doing this once a month is good.

1. Download and install the free Auslogics Registry Defrag program from:​

2. Run the program at least once a month to keep the registry defragmented.​

OPTION FOUR

Use Sleep Mode

NOTE: If you use your computer off an on a lot thoughout the day, then using Sleep mode instead of shutting the down computer will allow your computer to startup much quicker.

1. Set your Power Options to use the recommended settings for Sleep mode.​

OPTION FIVE

Check the Number of Processors Used at Boot Up

NOTE: If you have a multiple core CPU (Ex: Intel Core Duo or Quad CPU) or multiple CPUs, then this will show you how to check the Number of Processors to be sure that they are all used during boot up to help speed up the boot up time.

OPTION SIX

Disable or Remove Startup Programs

NOTE: While going through the list of startup programs on your computer, you should disable or remove the listed startup programs that you do not want or need to run at the startup of Vista. The less you have, the less time Vista will spend loading them at startup.

OPTION SEVEN

Log on Automatically to a User Account

NOTE: By default Vista has you select and logon to a user account at startup. You can set Vista to automatically logon to a selected user account and boot to that user's desktop instead at startup. This will save you the time of manually doing it.

OPTION EIGHT

Disable the Transient Multimon Manager (TMM)

NOTE: If you do not use multiple monitors or connect a laptop to an external monitor, then disabling the Transient Multimon Manager (TMM) can save you the 2-3 second delay followed by a blank black screen as Vista searches for monitor changes when you startup Vista.

OPTION NINE

Disable Password Protection on Wakeup

NOTE: If you use Sleep mode from OPTION FOUR above and do not want password protection at wakup, then disabling the requirement to enter the user account password when the computer wakes up from sleep mode will save you startup time from having to do this.

BV helped me find a few services that needed some adjustment. I was really hoping that those utilities by Auslogics would have made an improvement rather than a slight lag, but no worries. I have 4 Gigs of RAM and shouldn't complain! lol.

With an initial start-up of 468 seconds, it's safe to say that my system 'has issues'. Once everything's up and running, though, it runs fine.

Gateway wants me to send the system to them for a couple of weeks to figure out what's going on, but it'd be a true hassle since I work from my home & need my 'puter.

Your forum suggestions had an immediate impact !

Your boot time script indicated it was taking 468 seconds to launch.



I first configured the system to force the Dual core start, which took boot time down to 410 seconds.



Next, I disabled the TMM, bringing start-up down to 373 seconds.



I'd already implemented the other relevant suggestions, and while it's still not as fast as I'd prefer, I've shaved nearly two minutes from my start-up.

I was jazzed about that one too. Then, I saw the note about Vista (or, maybe it was Vista 64-bit) using all cores to boot up by default. I went through the steps just in case -- no change. Still, it was great information to have. These are great tutorials.

It woud be for both of them by default. Somehow some folks get a faster boot time with it, while others do not.

Did about 90% of the tweaks here. When all was said and done I went from 99 seconds to 82. Pretty impressive, about a 12% increase in reboot speed. I notice more in the initial boot then the shutdown which was pretty fast to begin with, but the "2 second shutdown" was helpful.

I still have that annoying black screen before the desktop loads, even after the TMM has been disabled. I haven't disabled the Auto Generating System Restore point however, prob would help but I like that feature since I'm pretty lame when it comes to monthly tasks for a PC.

This has been great. I didn't realize there were SO many pre-scheduled tasks alone in Vista that I was unaware of. It's going to be a long while before I fully learn everything about Vista, like I had with XP to get it to where it runs fast and smooth. But for the most part, it's running pretty darn well now.

I use PerfectDisk 2008 to defragment my hard drive. Does this program (along with other hard driver defragmenting programs) defrag the registry? Or do I have to use the Auslogics program? (I'll try it out anyways)

Hi Frank,

I'm not familiar with PerfectDisk 2008 features, so I do not know if it will defrag the registry. I did not see the registry mentioned at the PerfectDisk 2008 features website. Not all disk defragmenter programs do though. The Auslogics Registry Defrag is a good one though, and they just updated it to.

I just defragged the registry about an hour ago. It was fragmented 5%, not too bad I guess and it gave me 12MB of free space. I never really let my hard drive get fragmented more than .2%, lol - but excellent tutorial by the way.

Yeah, it usually does not get to bad unless your always installing and uninstalling items. It may only save a second or so, but it all adds up.
