I have heard from Avast and this is a known issue. Their last update was created to fix it and was just released yesterday. As you already know, I did not have the BSOD when I rebooted last night after installing the update, and I did not have it this morning when I started my computer.

However, I am still having that situation where, after my desktop comes up and things start loading, my screen flashes to all white. Today it was only for a couple of seconds but I'm sure it shouldn't be doing that. I will just have to see what happens now.

I am most appreciative of all the help you have given me. It has been a joy to have a computer problem and have this kind of attention and assistance.

To me it sounds like that update might be causing the problem.
When the term expires, if it were my computer, I would begin to use the free Microsoft Security Essentials and the free Malwarebytes. I am not going to knock what you have, but many use the free products, including myself, without problems of flashing screens or BSODs.
Whatever you decide, I am very happy that I was able to lead you in the right direction and cause you to get the patch.

Edit: Here are my suggestions, if you think that the new problem is not caused by the patch (I would disagree) post a new thread with the new problem. You will get additional people to help. They are not coming here because we are working on a BSOD problem.
If you think it is the Anti Virus, stop the pain and go with Microsoft Security Essentials

I guess that's not the way I see it, but perhaps I didn't explain things very well. This driver has been causing BSODs on many machines, which is why they came out with the update released yesterday to hopefully fix it. Funny thing, I find out that my friend, who has the free version of Avast, recently developed this same BSOD problem on her machine, which runs Windows 7. I emailed her today about the update.

I have heard many good things about Microsoft Security Essentials from sources that I trust. But I had already purchased Avast when I first read about it.

I had been running MBAM free for a long time. The reason I recently purchased the full version is because of the protection it is supposed to offer against Trojans getting on your machine in the first place. These programs that suddenly start downloading automatically, out of the blue, and which are actually infections have become so prevalent and are becoming more and more so all the time. The article I read strongly recommended that if one could afford to purchase the full version to do so; otherwise to continue to scan with the free version.

-----------------------------------------I just received your edit. I think you are talking about the white screen rather than the BSOD, is that correct? I have made those in the Avast forum aware of this white screen problem so will see what they say.

I am going with the assumption that the BSOD problems are over, but I think that this new flash on the screen may be caused by the patch.
As far as other AV and BSODs, you can be using a different anti virus and still get a BSOD, but it can be caused by something else.
Whatever you decide, I wish you the best of luck

Please see my initial post on this. It mentioned the white screen. I didn't even know about the update at that time.

I will run the sfc /scannow and see what it shows. I do run it occasionally.

I jumped to conclusions, it is not the patch.
Go to device manger and look for any very small yellow warning triangles, especailly by graphics.
Update graphics driver.

I did the sfc /scannow. It reported items were found and fixed.

I am sorry but at this time I have to decline updating that NVIDIA GE Force 7300 LE driver. The last time I tried that I ended up in so much of a mess. I finally contacted Microsoft Support and by the time that guy got done with me I had to use the Dell Factory Restore. (Seriously)

Updating that driver would be a very last resort for me. I learned through the last experience that even tho updates may be available, that doesn't necessarily mean they will be compatible with one's system.

I did want to let you know that I had not done a restart since running the SFC command yesterday. Before doing a restart this morning to check things out, I also decided to disable MBAM from running at startup. I just activated it manually after everything else was loaded. I did NOT have the white screen so am hoping the problem is solved.

Again, I do appreciate your help and thank you very much.

I truly hope so too.
If you do have any more problems related to the BSOD post back in this thread. If you have any unrelated problems, begin a new thread. In a new thread you will have the benefit of my expertise plus others who do not participate in BSOD problems.
Wish you the best and thanks for the rep.
