Cannot install Vista, stuck on "please wait" screen

Hello there fellow vista users,
Here's my painful vista installation scenario:

  • Booting from DVD
  • "Windows is loading files... (white progress bar) (takes ~1 minute)
  • Blue/green vista background (HDD and DVD drives are active) (takes 20 minutes for the next screen)
  • I get to select languages, then click on "install now"
  • Next I get a "please wait..." screen (HDD and DVD drives are active) (takes 40 minutes for the next screen)
  • If I'm "lucky" I get this next - "A required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing" pop-up and that's as far as I was able to go
The same happens with Windows 7, the screens differ a little, and I think the waiting times between these screens a even longer, but it's the same deal
Windows XP installs fast and without an errors

What I've tried so far:

  • Updated BIOS
  • Tried different settings in BIOS
  • Tried different RAM
  • Switched DVD drive to slave/master
  • Bunch of other desperate stuff
  • Updated the DVD drive firmware to the most recent
  • Checked with Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor (no issues found)
My specs are in my profile, if you need more information on the matter, please ask
Thanks in advance

I didn't mention that I've already checked my system with Vista adviser in OP. I didn't see any issues, except for the hard disk space, but since I will do a clean install on the C: partition, that shouldn't be an issue. I've attached my Vista adviser report

I would suspect that it's the temporary files that are generated during the installation that are causing this (due to the lack of disk space).

I would suggest formatting the C: drive when first starting the installation - that way there's nothing on the hard drive to prevent it from installing.

I'd also suggest a hard drive diagnostic to be sure that there's not an issue there. Here's a link to a how-to on my website: HD Diagnostic

Thanks for replying. I've tried installing Vista/7 after formatting my hard drive, no progress. I've also ran my hard drive through diagnostics software (extended test), which showed no errors

quick update:
I'm thinking that this might be dvd-rom or it's controller problem. When setup gets stuck on certain stages of installation, it gets back to life as soon as I open dvd-rom tray, e.g., the language selection screen or dvd driver request screen come instantly.
Here's the screen:

Try with a different DVD drive. It's unlikely a controller problem.

Borrowed a different DVD drive from a friend (an older model NEC) and Vista (and 7) installed without a problem. I'm still wondering what was wrong with my DVD drive and why Vista/7 refused to work with it.
SOLVED
