Solved Computer crashing and screen becoming full of green lines

When running certain games (League of Legends, Worms, etc.) or skyping, my computer has started shutting off and the screen becomes solid with vertical green lines. This happens primarily when I have my external monitor plugged in. After this happens and I restart my computer, my external monitor says "input not recognized". After waiting 5-10 minutes the problem seems to fix itself and I can start my computer normally.
The reason i'm running an external monitor in the first place is because the screen on my laptop hasn't been working since September XD.
Any help or information on this problem would be greatly appreciated!
Thank,
-Joe

Hello Joe and welcome to the forums

It sounds like a driver error to me so lets have a go at updating your drivers.

1. Open the start menu
2. In the search box, type Device Manager
3. When it opens, expand the Display Adapters category
4. Right click on any entry in that category and select Uninstall
5. Reboot your computer

When windows reboots, it will see that the driver is missing and install it.

Hey Tom,
Thanks for helping me out here!
Ok, I've done that. So hopefully that will solve the problem.
I also wanted to mention I've been seeing error messages saying " Display Driver atikmday stopped working and has recovered. I guess this supports your theory on the display driver being in bad shape
Also, I thought it may have had something to do with how hot my computer was getting. I ran a heat management program and found my motherboard running at almost 105*C, so that can't be good...Since reducing my computer down to 'power save' mode, and had the heat keeping steady around 67*C, I haven't had the problem again.
I do already have a cooling tray but I guess that's just not working enough.
Any other ways to reduce the heat of my computer further?
Thanks again,
-Joe

105*C!?!? That's incredibly hot. In fact, that's dangerously hot! Any temperature above 100*C could cause damage to the components of your PC.

Okay, in HijackThis (if you've closed it, just run a scan again!)

Also, I see you're using Norton anti virus. This eats CPU so to speak :p So I would recommend that you change to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).

It uses a LOT less RAM and is very highly regarded across this forum. It can be downloaded from:

Virus, Spyware & Malware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials

The Norton removal tool can be found here: Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product | Norton Support

I use MSE and Malwarebytes to provide protection on my laptop and I also have Trusteer Rapport installed to protect me when I use online banking.

Rapport said:
Rapport implements a completely new approach to protecting customers and employees. By locking down customer browsers and creating a tunnel for safe communication with the online website, Rapport prevents Man-in-the-Browser malware and Man-in-the-Middle attacks. Rapport also prevents phishing via website authentication to ensure that account credentials are passed to genuine sources only.

Most banks recommend that you use this

Ok. i've done that.
And with regards to Norton, i've tried to delete it numerous times, and I actually thought I had. There is no Norton still installed on my computer, but there are files that I can't seem to delete.
Is there a way to purge all of norton from my system?
And I will install Microsoft Security Essentials now.

Download and install Revo Uninstaller]

Try removing it with this

If that fails then download and install CCleaner

Use the Cleaner option and then the registry option, but at the prompt MAKE A BACKUP OF THE REGISTRY!

Hello. So amidst all the help you have given [which has been very helpful, don't get me wrong :) ] I am still experiencing the same problem. At this point I really don't know what I should do. Can someone walk me though opening up my laptop and maybe cleaning the fan/heatsink? I am almost certain this problem is centered around the heat of my computer.
