Computer Shuts Down

Hello Everybody

Before I post my 1st question, I would like to say a big hello
Hope I will be welcome among you guys and hopefully I get my problem sorted too.

Right....... here we go:

O/S: Vista Ultimate x86
CPU: AMD 64 X2
MOBO: MCP61SM-GM
HDD: SATA 2 Barracuda 7200.9

Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error:

0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000
"Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"

Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem.

Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!?

How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?!

Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.

However, UNLESS if the motherboard (or whatever) tries to load the onboard USB (ect) DRIVERS and that;s what could trigger the PSU to shutdown as it might not supply enough or too much power???? Or am I just dreaming lol

Anyway guys this is what else I tried:

1) Formated the SATA 2 drive with XP (on the actual originall computer), formates it, loads the drives and when it comes to the screen where it saying "Installing Windows" *there is a bar below showing what it;s installing - installes devices* then it shuts down .... always at the same point / place - over and over again.

2) Inserted VISTA Ultimate x86 and booted up (on the actual originall computer). The white bar loader come sup and as soon as it finishes the vista load-bar appears for like 1 or 2 seconds and the pc shuts down - always the same thing.


So, what is happaning with it?!
Have you got any type of idea or suggestions?!

PS: Does it make difference if I use Vista x86 or does it have to be x64 (cos its AMD 64 x2) ???

Doesn't make a difference about the 32- or 64-bit, as your processor will support both.

Did you run chkdsk /f? The "f" indicates fixing any errors it finds. Did it find any errors?

chkdsk /r repairs and locates bad sectors, chkdsk /f just repairs.

Yes, at the time when I plugged the SATA 2 into my PC, through the Managemant Console - I did run checkdisk.

But again, if the disk is broken - then why did it fully work on my pc (xp) ?

If vista doesn't like it, it won't work. Try a new hard disk if you can.

Yes I would try if I had a spare one, but I dnt!
and none of my neighbours have a spare one either ... pfffff

I could buy one, but what if that does not resolve the problem!!??

And by the way, do you get to understand that the SATA 2 works on my PC (XP) but not on VISTA - does it make sense?! I thought if it works on mine thn the drive should be allright - if u get me!

SATA 2 is the controller. How many controllers do you have on the motherboard? For example Gigabyte has 6 sata ports on the P55 chipset and 2 from Gigabyte. Switch controllers.

You formatted the drive on another pc and ran chkdsk without errors. What if you installed your drive in your other computer and tried to load Vista? Will that work (as a test)?

the MCP61SM-GM Motherboard has only 2 SATA controllers
(where you can plug the sata data cable to) and I tried them both.

Does each controller have separate SATA II ports? If so, pick another controller.

All i see is that I have 2 ports where I can plug each SATA drive

but there is the IDE Controller taken for the CD drive :/

Try the hard drive in another pc as has been suggested or try a new hard drive. Vista doesn't seem to like the one you have.

Well, I got 2 computers:

1 - XP
2 - Vista

I plugged the SATA Drive into XP, formated with XP = works fine
then I thought lets try with VISTA CD and again it did work fine.

Obviously, plugging back the drive into VISTA computer will not work
cos the drive contains details of my XP computer. So I do a clean format, delete partion and that ... plug it back into Vista computer - and it always does the same thing.

Personally I thought, if the drive works on my computer then it should work on vista computer too. Baring mind, I tried both operating system on the "vista computer number2" and did not have any luck.

I been suggested to buy new motherboard - from a PC shop.
What do you think ?!

If you want a new motherboard, then its probably a good idea to get a new system. Either way, this is a great board for DDR2 with 8 SATA ports and Esata:

Ahh, damn I dnt have DVD RW- Otherwise would burn one.

Anyway, can I use the IDE controller (which is currently linked to CD Drive only) to attach with an IDE Drive?! Will that work at all ?!

Yes, from memory an IDE controller can support two devices, except you have to fiddle with jumper settings, and set a master and slave. Try that if you want, but a motherboard is easier.

However, before any of this, can you get a new SATA II cable and try that???

Before I want to buy MOBO, I want to test devices and find actual fault.
In this case, I will connect a spare IDE HDD to the 2nd (slave) IDE Connector and if the XP or VISTA install properly thn its all the SATA 2 fault.

Then I am gona "hammer" it (was going to say "will shredd it" but ermm my shredder does not accept metal). I shall be back shortly
