Connected HDTV to PC - NO SOUND AT ALL

Here's 3 actual pics I took 10 mins ago...a S/PDIF cable from my BFG280GTX to the S/PDIF mobo connector input which in turn provides sound to the amp(in my case) or TV...hope this may help some people.
Make sure you adjust your settings on the computer to reflect this.

well ive included some pics of my SP/DIF connections, quite easy to do but may be difficult for a novice.
first of all I located the SP/DIF header (panel) in the first picture and got my cable, plugged the small end into the GPU, simple enough, the problem may be that you dont know where to plug the two connectors that go into the header, well, the black one goes into the pin labelled ground, and the white one goes into the pin labelled out, ive also put a pic of my header info above the actual header.

and i noticed we have the same motherboard grimreaper, wouldnt go without it :p

well i cant really say that, i dont use HDMi much, DVI does the job better picture wise, looks faded on my monitor with HDMi, but still an acceptable picture, sound though, isnt that good, my monitor has auto volume levelling in effect all the time and there is no option to turn it off so i can play some music and the sound takes 5 seconds to come in, when the song stops, it goes quiet again. Very annoying, but I use a seperate amplifier and speaker set, i love choosing my own hardware and there is effectively no limit to how powerful you can go with seperates systems.

I have now been informed by Realtek that DVI-D does not support sound. I am so confused.

You're making things harder than they are. Not sure what is so confusing,

1. Get and connect the SPDIF cable from your video card to the SPDIF header on the motherboard (even easier with the appropriate ATI card(s) as they already have the Realtek audio on the card, no need for the cable).

2. Use the HDMI-DVI adapter that came with your video card.

3. Connect the HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV.

4. Make sure everything is configured properly in the Vista and/or Realtek settings for using the HDMI connection.

5. Enjoy watching and listening to movies, etc on your TV.

Oh and the only real diffenece between DVI-I and DVI-D is, one will allow digital and analogue (DVI-I) and the other is digital only (DVI-D).

I have now been informed by Realtek that DVI-D does not support sound.

Might want to get Realtek to tell that to grimreaper and MrNeeds (and ATI who went so far as to integrate the Realtek audio chip on their video cards for just this purpose) who are both using the DVI port on their video cards with a HDMI-DVI adapter, and getting both audio and video.

indeed, i am recieving audio simply by putting the SP/DIF cable into the header and GPU, why would they say something like that when its clearly working, simple check really, if your GPU has an SP/DIF header on it, then it supports audio over DVI

Actually Realtek was only half right, DVI (I or D) on its own doesn't support audio until you get to the newer lines of video cards that either have the header on the card (Nvidia; most, if not all of the 9xxx series of cards, not sure about the 8xxx series) or the audio chip on the card (ATI; everything from the HD2xxx series and up). That and Realtek even includes support for the audio chip on the ATI cards in the latest drivers.

Ok so basically you don't need to set the HDMI Out as default, but when you plug the HDMI cable into your laptop and tv, ONLY use the HDMI, because putting in the stereo jack interrupts the sound as stereo is default. HDMI takes care of picture and sound not like DVI, S-Video, and VGA, and AV (Video L-R AUDIO) cables. If you have tried that, then it your sound card probably. You can try reinstalling the drivers... or call ASUS support.

3 flaws in your logic,
1. If the Speakers are plugged in, you do need to set your audio to HDMI out.
2. He's not using a Laptop
3. Where did you get ASUS from?

and ive noticed something else wrong with your logic, but may be because you are under the illusion of it being a laptop, The HDMI on Desktop PCs comes through the DVI port, unless the GPU has a HDMI out built in, which this chap doesnt, So....
How is the hospital treating you?

If I connect the SPDIF inside the PC will I still be able to get analogue sound if I have to change back to my LCD monitor or will I have to disconnect the SPFIP cable?

all you need to do is set the device as default, as illustrated below:
first picture is where you need to be, just click on HDMi output and set as default, when you want to change it back, click speakers and set that as default.

Thanks for clearing that up. I still can't understand why my PC, which I only bought late last year didn't come with the S/PDIF cable installed. Think I might ring them and find out.

I can think of a couple of reasons,

1. The brand of your 9800GT didn't come with the cable in the box. There are only a few (Gigabyte and Zotac are two I know do) of the card manufacturers that include the cable in the box (heck some of them don't even include the HDMI-DVI adapter).

2. The place that built the computer doesn't know about that feature on the 9xxx series of cards (and should if that is the case), so didn't install one if point #1 is the case.

I have the spdif lead, the casing's off the pc. I have plugged the little square connector (SPDIF cable) into the graphics card which can only go in one way but I don't know If I have to two wires the other end plugged in the right way round on the little 3 pin yellow connector on the motherboard. Any help would be much appreciated as I am too scared to turn it on incase it blows up!

dont worry, we are here for you, the black wire needs to be connected to the ground and the white one needs to be connected to the spdif out, ive also added what you need to be looking for, the first picture is to make sure you have the right header, the second picture is how they go into the header, the black line is the black cable and the blue line is the white one. SP/DIF OUT is white in the middle one, GND is black on the right.

I know I am a pain but very nervous of anything electrical (I have a habit of blowing things up) when I plug the connector into the Graphics card, the white lead is on the left and black on the right so when I plug the leads into the motherboard black should be on the outside and white next to it. I am so confused, I have been on Xpertvision Inc (got the name off my graphics card) and had a search through there and I think they sey the opposite?
