Customizing right pane in Vista Start menu.

Untitled-4.jpg

I'm looking to put shortcuts to each of my primary hard drives in the circled pane.
I'm pretty sure it's possible and all I have to do is modify a system file or some ****, but where would I go about doing such a thing?

Above picture isn't mine, due to my print screen not working, but I have near all of the right panes contents off (via Start Menu Properties), thus why I'm wanting to put my own custom shortcuts there.

Hello BladedThesis

You might find a place to start at these links below.

Be sure to read all of page two @ second link!

It's a place to start until someone with more insight can help you.

Keep us informed.

The last post of yours in the second provided link is exactly what I'm looking to do:
I just did a reinstall from the recovery D: partition on my OEM machine.
I was pleased to discover that it did not reformat my M:\Media partition
when it reformatted C:\ to reinstall the OS. IT did reletter it to E:\Media though.

Anyway I wanted to recreate the (right side) Start Menu shortcut to my now
E:\Media\Music file. I must have inadvertently clicked on just E:\Media instead
of E:\Media\Music. Because this is what I came up with.

View attachment 3448

I am real happy with the outcome! When I click on the short cut the
entire E:\Media partition opens.
Is this what you wanted to be able to do?

Or did you want to access a whole different HDD with it?

Let me know something!

Later  Ted

I'm looking to do what you did with Media (E: ) with my four different primary hard drives.

Hi BladedThesis

You may need to read all of page two in link two!

Brink seems to think one may encounter some problems
attempting some of this !!!
You may want to wait to hear from him!

Yes, I had read all of the second page, and I see that it was Brink who had the problems, but it was the picture of yours I am referring to. How did you get Media (E: ) on to the right pane of the menu?
I'm wanting to put System (C: ), Programs (D: ), SEEDBOX (G: ), Passport (F: ), My Book (H: ) into that pane, due to having removed the majority of what originally and can be in thus said pane.

Are yot talking about HDD's or Partitions?
I got this from Dzomlija a while back.

That is just the first link you provided in the first place, which I had already looked over as well, which is still not what I'm looking to do. Thank you anyways, I will scour search engines some more in search of a how-to.

You asked me how I did it. That is how.
That is exactly HOW I did it!
Instead of expanding and clicking Music, I clicked Media.
The entry in the Start Menu changed on it's own!
Item #2 in the link.

I guess it was a misunderstanding on my part then, I understood it as you had a shortcut to your media partition directly, and not just through changing the location of the Music shortcut.

My Computer

Hey BladedThesis

I added to the last post.

The link in the Start Menu does go directly to the 200GB Partition E:\Media

Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Alright, I think I found how to do what I'm looking to do.

-First find the folder you would like to put on the right pane of the start menu. For me, it was a network folder that I wanted to be able to expand as a menu to reduce time in going through windows explorer since I use this folder quite frequently.
-Secondly, you must choose which folder you are willing to sacrifice. For me, My Music. Right click on the task bar and go to Properties, in this dialogue box choose Start Menu and then customize. Go down to the folder you wish to modify and make sure your settings are correct (as like how I wanted mine to display as a menu)
-Finally you must open regedit and go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Here you will see a list of all of the preset folders. Click on the folder you wish to modify and delete that key. Take note that all registry keys here are REG_EXPAND_SZ. For the new key you want to right click and select New>String Value. Make the Value Name the same as the name of the old folder (My Music). Double-Click and edit the Value and make the Value Data the location of the folder you wish to have on the Start Pane. Following this, reboot the computer and it should work like a charm. Feel free to post here if you have problems with it and I'll see what I can do to help.

I'll see if this does it.

Hello BladedThesis

Same outcome but mine is easier!

View attachment 3477
  1. Click the "Start Orb"
  2. Right-click on "Music", then select "Properties"
  3. Click the "Location" tab
  4. Click the "Move..." button
  5. In the "Select a Destination" window, browse into the folder "E:\Media". The destination folder should preferably NOT be a drive root folder.
  6. Click "Select Folder"
  7. Click "Apply"
  8. Wait for Windows to move the xisting contents (if any) of the previous location. If you get any messages that a file exists in the destination (such as "desktop.ini", etc), allow the copy to overwrite the existing file.
  9. When the move is complete, click "OK"
The "Music" icon on the Start Menu will now open to "E:\Media".
This technique will also work for the following user profile "folders":
  • Contacts
  • Desktop
  • Documents
  • Downloads
  • Favourites
  • Links
  • Music
  • Pictures
  • Saved Games
  • Searches
  • Videos
Speacial Thanks to Dzomlija

Except what you had said was not what I was looking to do.
I was looking to make a shortcut to the root drive (C:\), and not something that was within it.

What a lot of farting about, when the link is already there, its called "Computer", I can understand the "Media" file one,but the other is window dressing.

Hello silver

I just added "HP C:" to prove a point!
I have already put it back like it was.
You're right I only need one pointer to C:
