DEP Closing Fraps

I had to record my screen so i started looking for software, and then Fraps came to my mind, an old but gold piece of software, used by many youtubers in 2011 and 2012, it seems it was discontinued in 2013, no official announcement was made, just nwe versions stopped to be realased, i downloaded it, installed it and when it finished it crashed right away, and Windows informed me that Data Execution Prevention (DEP) stopped it to protect my computer, i added Fraps to the DEP exclusion list but nothing, it kept crashing and telling me that DEP closed it, i even tried disabling DEP with CMD, but same results.
I was wondering if someone knows how to prevent this or fix it, since i didnt find anything about this error on the internet, not even in the Fraps support page.

Hi Joadix100- Where did you download it from? I downloaded it from here- Download Fraps 3.5.99 free version
and installed it. No errors when I opened it. I guess you have to buy it to register it but that shouldn't affect what you're talking about.

Possible reasons why Fraps does not crash with BEX on wither 3’s Vista x64:

(1) He does not have that infernal Extended Kernel.

(2) He does not use Intel Graphics.

Possible alternative: ShareX 12.0.0

maybe, but as far as i am concerned DEP does not get afected by the Extended kernel or the graphics card.

About the extended kernel, why do you think it is infernal?

I don't know if any of the following applies to this particular problem since I know nothing about the extended kernal:

Very complicated to me.

You can always disable DEP if you really want to use Fraps. There are alternate programs for recording your screen such as bandicam, movavi, etc.

It sounds like you already know how to disable DEP, but there is an old tutorial at this very forum:

DEP - Enable or Disable

I would advise against keeping DEP disabled, and it very likely would not prevent Fraps from crashing: You just wouldn’t get a DEP notification and the buffer overflow would proceed unchecked. In that case, there would still be a crash report in Problem Reports and Solutions (unless you disabled that too). This was certainly true of iTunes 12.1.3, which is why I used to recommend iTunes 11.1.5 or earlier for Vista. (The possibility occurs to me that wither 3 might have DEP grayed out.)

Interesting. I have iTunes 12.1.3.6 installed. When I launched it this morning, it wanted to download 12.12xxxx. I said yes but I don't know if it did or where it downloaded to. I later downloaded 12.12 and tried to install it. However, it said I needed a later version of the Windows Installer Service.
I don't know what "greyed out" means but I don't have DEP disabled. In the settings, I only have it turned on for essential Windows programs and services. While I was typing this, I decided to go the extra mile. I changed the DEP settings to protect all programs and services and rebooted. I could still run Fraps without issue.

If wither 3 cannot reproduce the BEX with DEP enabled using the same download...

Because it is not a Microsoft product: It is a hack that is officially supported by nothing. In particular, I wonder if you installed the developer’s mfplatsetup? There was perhaps no need to, since you prefer Chromium browsers - but if you can watch h264 videos using a recent version of Firefox, then yes you have it. It was known to break the 32-bit Windows Media Player and might possibly break other media programs that otherwise supported “vanilla” Vista. Of course you could try similar programs! Fraps appears to recommend NVidia or AMD graphics that you don’t have.

No it doesn’t make sense: You would never see a DEP notification (Captura3) if the DEP tab (Captura4) is grayed out due to being disabled, although you might still get some other crash notification. Did you restart after disabling DEP? If you get a crash report that is not a BEX in Problem Reports and Solutions (control panel) for Fraps, then disabling DEP is no solution.

even with DEP disabled or Fraps added to the exclusion list it crashes and thisCaptura3.JPG Appears (fraps was closed by DEP)

even with DEP disabled or Fraps added to the exclusion list it crashes and thisView attachment 31065 Appears (fraps was closed by DEP)
Then DEP was not disabled! Did you open an elevated command prompt? (It is not enough to be logged in as administrator: you must run CMD as administrator.) Was there a success message after you ran the command? After restarting, did you open the DEP tab in control panel to verify it was grayed out? (There is an image of this in the tutorial.) I seem to recall that it might be necessary to temporarily disable Secure Boot on some relatively new hardware before you can disable DEP. (My old Vista system did not have Secure Boot.)

It is not unusual that adding a program to the exclusion list has no effect. That never worked for iTunes either.

Again, I do not recommend globally disabling DEP on behalf of one program, and would suggest that you try alternative software - or better yet, use Windows 7.

OT: Did you have an issue with Microsoft Security Essentials service stopping last month? I saw a report at MSFN involving Windows Defender definition updates that might also have affected MSE on Vista.

Again, I do not recommend globally disabling DEP on behalf of one program, and would suggest that you try alternative software - or better yet, use Windows 7.

OT: Did you have an issue with Microsoft Security Essentials service stopping last month? I saw a report at MSFN involving Windows Defender definition updates that might also have affected MSE on Vista.
but DEP was disabled, i ran the command in an elevated (Run as administrator) command prompt and got the answer from the cmd "operation completed succesfully"(in other word it succeded) restarted and the option was greyed out in the menu, i dont think this 2008 laptop has secure boot, but if it has is always enabled since there is no option in the BIOS about it.
About windows 7 and another software, sure, i can do that but i will stay with vista since my laptop was designed to run it, i love vista and apart from that, it serves its purpose, i have a mor powerful windows 10 machine that is my main machine, this one is to study, make some word documents, read pdf's and that kind of basic tasks, and i want to use Fraps for nostalgic purposes, i have ShareX and aTubecatcher that can record the screen without a problem.

About MSE: i didnt had any problem, it runs and updates its definitions just fine (remember that it fails to update manually but updates automatically after a restart or full shutdown, i normally hibernate to decrease the boot time) in fact the updated yesterday when i restarted to try to solve the DEP problem, i have virus definitions 1.367.1011.0
Also my Windows 10 machine updated Defender definitions just fine today to the latest version, the only thing is that since windows 11 came out windows update recieves new definitions every 2 days and not every day like before.

So Windows DEP was disabled. Not sure, but might be because Intel Celeron 540 has Execute Disable bit (XD).

Is there a no execute option in BIOS?

OT: Thanks for news that MSE had no issue on Vista. Definition updates will probably end in January 2023.

Is it possible that you have the EMET Toolkit installed? Just wondering since, from what I can see, it's an additional defense against things like malware.

as far as i know, i dont have it, i never installed it and it does not appear on the Programs menu, but if it is something that would protect me, i would like to have it, if you have a link to the installer or something i would apreciate it.

I didn't want you to have it. I thought maybe if you had it, it was manifesting itself via the DEP problem. This is a good read on it-
