explorer problem

Run a hijackthis to be sure before finding the problem and attach the log file here.
There is something i do not understand and before going further it is definitely good to know if you are infected or not.

i just did a virus scan and it picked up 1 virus:
trojan.wimad
norton said it removed it successfully...
don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Run it asking for a log file, attach it here when done (few seconds)

Still, though I am not an expert, at first glance I don't see anything untoward....but someone who analyzes these things on a daily basis will have a better answer

yea, no idea what ones are needed processes and what ones arn't... i was looking through my program files before, and found a folder called "bonjour" i opened it, and there is a exe file called mDNSResponder i tried to delete the folder, but i get a access denied error. Same thing when i try delete it through command prompt... probably nothing to do with the problem in explorer, but still strange..

Google is your friend.

Bonjour is the Apple Updater service - in other words, if you have Apple QuickTime (and especially with iTunes installed) then you have this task that periodically checks to make sure you have the latest version.

I looked up a couple of those apps myself - sttray.exe for one, because I had never heard of it - but I have never had a computer with any Sigmatel Audio hardware in it either....

You Hijackthis log is clean, None of the processes are spyware, a virus or appear as suspicious...There is an unusual amount of svchost.exe processes but they all reside in the system32 folder and its security permissions only allow Microsoft software using the "TrustedInstaller" accont so its unwriteable, you have nothing to worry about for these results

Deactivate google desktop, reboot try explorer.

Do you have a spare harddrive you can try installing Vista on? Just unplug the other hard-drives for safety, then install Vista + Programs...If it happens again we will know its a piece of software your using.

You can always plug the hard-drive your using now back in later.

Did you try to logon with a different account to see if the problem occurs only with your admin account?

I don't have any other hard drive, however i started the computer in safe mode and the icons show up fine. Also, the icons don't show up on another user account.

Very weird indeed.
When you right click on a folder and choose "Explore" what's going on?

Edit:
Make a selective start (msconfig) without the startup progs.

if i rightclick computer and click explore, nothing happens, if i right click a drive or something, it appears in the side pane.
i'll try a selective start.

Also, when you said you tried a different account, was this an account that was already in existence? if so, make a brand new account and try....

I did a selective startup and the problem is still there. The account was in existence, i'll create a new one and try now.
