Solved External usb floppy: change Drive letter from B to A

I have an external USB floppy drive that got assigned the drive letter B when it was plugged into one of the usb ports on the back of my PC.

I need to change it to letter A. The drive is not listed under computer management: disk management. Removing the drive and reinstalling does not chhange the drive letter. Removing the driver in device manager
results in installing new hardware, but with drive letter B. The Bios has several settings releated to usb devices--but nothing to do with drive letters.

so I am at a loss of how to fix this---any help would be most apreciated:D

Hello HawkeyeLOM,

If you do not already have an A drive, then you might see if the drive is listed in DISKPART.

1. Open a elevated command prompt.

2. In the command prompt, type diskpart and press Enter.

3. In the command prompt, type list volume and press Enter.
NOTE: Look for the Volume # listed for the drive letter B. If not listed, then type exit and press Enter. You will not be able to change it with diskpart.

4. In the command prompt, type select volume # and press Enter.
NOTE: Substitute # with the actual volume # from step 3. For example, if the B drive was listed as Volume 1 in step 3, I would type select volume 1 and press Enter.

5. In the command prompt, type assign letter=A and press Enter.
NOTE: If you receive an error, then you will not be able to assign the letter A to the drive instead of B.

6. In the command prompt, type exit and press Enter.

7. Close the command prompt.


Hopefully you now have the B drive as the A drive now.

Umm, ok.

In the BIOS CMOS settings, set the Floppy Drive A to None or Disabled to see if it may free up the letter A for the USB floppy drive to use instead.

No such settings in BIOS Intel motherboard DP45SG Bios 108

Only thing I have not tried is removing both the floppy usb control and usb floppy drive in device manager

FIXED: I uninstalled the NEC USB floppy controller under Universal serial Bus controller in Device Manager. Unpluged the drive, waited a few seconds and pluged back in---Device manager installed new controller and floppy. This time it shows as Drive A in Computer.
