How to Extract Files from the Vista Installation DVD​

This will show you how to extract original files from the retail Vista installation DVD. You can then use these extracted files to replace missing or corrupted system files in your current Vista installation.
Note   Note
Normally you will find out that you have corrupted system files that cannot be repaired after your run a sfc /scannow command and look at it's log report.




Here's How:
1. Download and install the same free 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) 7-Zip program version as your 32-bit or 64-bit Vista.​

2. Use Compatibiliy Mode on the 7-Zip shortcut and check the Run this program as an administrator box.​
​
3. Run 7-Zip, then click on Tools and Options. Next, click on the Select all button and on OK. (See screenshot below)​

4. Insert your retail Vista installation disc into the DVD drive and wait for it to be recognized.​

5. In 7-Zip, navigate to your DVD drive letter (ex: E: ) that has the Vista installation disc in it, and double click on the Sources folder. (See screenshot below)​

6. Scroll down and double click on the install.wim file. (See screenshot below)​

7. You will now see this for a few seconds as it opens. (See screenshot below)​

8. Each numbered folder is a different edition of Vista. They will vary depending on what type of Vista installation DVD you have. To see what edition is for each numbered folder, select the 1.xml file and click on the Extract button on the toolbar. (See screenshots below)​

9. Copy the 1.xml file to your desktop. (See screenshot below)​

10. Open the 1.xml file on the desktop. Look for the IMAGE INDEX # and the Name under it in the code (highlighted in red below) to see what Vista edition is for each numbered folder in step 8. (See code box below with an example 1.xml file)​
NOTE: This file will open in Internet Explorer by default.​

11. Now open the numbered folder that is the same edition as your currently installed Vista edition, and navigate to the Windows\System32 folder. You can now select and extract the system files that you need to your desktop to use to copy and replace your missing or corrupted system files in your currently installed Vista. (See screenshot below)​
NOTE: You may need to take ownership and "Allow" your account "Full Control" of the file in your current installation before you will be allowed to replace it with the extacted copy.​

PLEASE HELP ME!
i ran a sfc and it came up that i had corrupt files it couldnt fix, so i tried the start up repair and said it found nothing, so i wanted to extract the files from my rein cd.
im also having these issues, and i followed all of your steps and get to number 8 of using 7 zip to extract and i dont see a 1xml file, they are all word files like $recycle bin,perf logs,program files, user, docs, windows, autoexec. bat, config sys etc, no numbers. and im using the reinstallation dvd that dell gave me with my comp.

oh and corrupt files were tcpmon,ini and settings.ini

Are you double clicking on the install.wim?

I get 7 folders and 1xml when I do.

I found tcpmon.ini but no "settings.ini"

Hello Jmil, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Unfortunately, you may not be able to extract the files from a OEM factory restore disc. It usually needs to be from a retail disc instead.

Could you do the steps in the yellow TIP box at the top of the tutorial below and post your sfcdetails.txt file. This will tell us exactly which files and their locations that are bad and need replacing. A bad file may need replacing in more than one location, so it's important to see and make sure if so. Afterwards, I'll upload a clean copy of the system files that needs to be replace for you.

Hi jmilo,

I think you will find you do not have an 1xml file - you don't need it because there is only one edititon in your dvd.

If you look in the sources\install.wim - then in windows\system32 - you may find the files you are looking for there.

Hi,

Yesterday my windows stopped uploading in normal form. I started it in safe mode. I used SFC to do repairs. 2 files could not be repaired: tcpmon.ini (C:\Wndows\System32\tcpmon.ini), and Settings.ini (C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Settings.ini). I tried replacing them using 7-zip file manager and the Windows Vista Reinstallation DVD that I had. After going through all that taking ownership and full control stuff, I finally stopped getting the "you are not authorized" and error messages. I interpreted this as that I had replaced them with the original files.

After that I made a SFC search again. Still, I got that the two files were faulty. Assuming that I had to reboot the computer to make the changes in place, i restarted the computer into normal mode. The windows did not load again.

Now I am back in safe mood. What can I do now?

In addition, you might also see if doing a SFC scan at boot instead may work better for you since the system would not be in use at the time.

I've followed all the instructions for extracting the files that SFC can't fix but I'm stuck at what to do with them. I have three files that SFC can't fix; vbscript.dll, winspool.drv.mui, and RSWOP.icm.

I found the information here that tells me how to extract the missing files from the installation disk. So now, I can find vbscript.dll in the Windows\System32 folder of the install disk. Winspool.drv.mui is not there. Using a little detective work, I can find it in another sub-folder of the disk, but now I don't remember where. I think it was in the en-US subfolder of System32. RSWOP.icm is not on the install disk. The instructions end at how to find them but don't say where to put them or how to put them there. I copied vbscript.dll to the C:\Windows\System32 folder and replaced the file there. Now my vbscript issues appear to be solved, but SFC still says the files are corrupt. All the files say "hash mismatch" and "source file in store is also corrupted". I did find a RSWOP.icm download from Microsoft that I installed, but SFC still says it can't fix that file. If I search my hard disk for the locations of the corrupted files, vbscript is located in more than 20 places.

Questions:

  1. When I find the file on the install disk to repair the files on the hard drive, where should I be putting these files? How do I know which path to follow?
  2. Where is the system store?
  3. Should I copy them to the appropriate directory or use 7-Zip to extract them to the directory?
  4. How am I going to fix RSWOP.icm if it's not on the installation disk?

I hope this is useful. BTW, I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Any help would be appreciated. This is a disk that got corrupted when the circuit board wigged out. The board has been replaced. I'm going to make an image of my partitions to transfer to a new drive but I'd like to fix Windows first before making the image.

I see a suggestion here to try running SFC on boot, but the last boot erased all the boot data. I'm reluctant to try that again before making an image.

If you like, you could also do a repair install to fix these. I would recommend to backup anything you do not want to lose first just to be safe though.

Thank you, but a repair install is not really an option for me. I have thousands of emails and restoring them back into Windows Mail took days last time I lost them. For 3 files, a repair install would cause much more work after it's done. The odd thing is that winspool.drv.mui was copied into all the locations (3) of the file and SFC still reports that it's bad. Vbscript.dll will be much more difficult if I have to do that since it's located in so many directories. Also, I don't see how a repair install will fix RSWOP.icm if it's nowhere on the disk.

I'm crossing my fingers that someone will have the answers to directly fix just these 3 files so I can move on without adding more tasks.

I've found entries in the registry that correspond to these files. Is it possible that the files are fine but the registry is reporting them wrong? I've seen fixes where people re-registered particular items to get them working again.

Sorry, but no. The SFC scan doesn't look at the registry. It checks the intregrity of the files themselves.

Re-registering has not affect on a corrupted file being.

Since this is for the print spooler, you might see if reinstalling your printer drivers may be able to help if you are having issues with it. If not, then it's most likely nothing to worry about until you have time to do a repair or clean install if Vista when you like.

It seems that SFC won't fix the files because the source file in store is also corrupted. Shouldn't I just be able to replace the file in the store and then let SFC fix it from there? I don't know where the store is.

Also, I'm not really noticing any problems with vbscript or print spooling, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. Is it possible that there aren't any problems but SFC is just going to continue reporting them as problems no matter what I do? Should I just ignore the messages until I actually see a problem? I am having boot problems and it's continually running a chkdsk at reboot, but I don't see them as spool or script issues.

Thank you for this, Shawn. I didn't know that 7z can handle WIM files like this. WinRAR is an excellent compression tool, but doesn't know how to deal with WIM files. Good to know about this.

I discovered that I have, mysteriously so, a corrupt "mf.dll" as determined by SFC scannow. I'm perplexed because my installation of Vista Ultimate is rather fresh. Anyway, following the initial OS installation my system went through numerous Microsoft updates, even after applying SP1 and SP2. Who knows, perhaps somewhere along the way the mf.dll got inadvertently replaced with one that isn't totally accepted by the OS.

I went to "dll-files.com" to learn about the file and was offered a replacement... but, I think I'd rather take it directly from my own trusted source disks.

Sorry for the late reply Andy.

I'd get the chkdsk issue sorted first. If there's corruption on the disk, then that could be the source of how this file got corrupted.
