I got a brand new computer yesterday and today I got my first Bsod. I need help with solving what ever is causing it. The blue screen showed up when I started the steam installer, it's not only this time but evry time I try installing steam. Any way to fix it? :sarc: BTW. I havn't got a image of the bsod but it's only saying something like "dumping physical memmory". Not any useful imformation.

I just ran an python installation and got another bsod. I think .msi files is the problem.

Hi -

What was the bugcheck (STOP error)? Look about 1/2-way down the BSOD screen on left side - something like 0x0000008e followed by 4 more in parenthesis. I am looking for the 1st 2 right now. There also may be a driver name - abc1234.sys

Hi -

Just to quote the store's salesman again so no one misses this -

"...they said that the problem was because I had 4gb of ram and that sometimes causes bsods... "

That is one of the most ridiculous statements that I have ever heard - you have a Vista x64 system. You could put much more RAM in it than that if you wanted to. Those store salesman know about as much as the ones that told me that I should go with x64 b/c "it holds twice as much as 32-bit systems".

The hotfix the store told you about refers to specific hardware and applies to BSODs during Vista installation - which you are not doing b/c the computer is brand new. Also, the KB refers to bgcheck 0xa -- the bugcheck listed in your post is 0x1a.

0x1a = MEMORY_MANAGEMENT - A severe memory management error occurred.

Knowing that this PC is brand new, I honestly would not take the time to run memory tests or others - TAKE THE SYSTEM BACK to the store and demand a new one.

First, lets gather some evidence. I think the dbug logs from the so-far 2 BSODs would help. Please get the dump files, zip them up and attach to your next post. You'll have to copy them out of c:\windows\minidump

Also, please see if you can gather the other files - they may still be around -
Code:
C:\Users\"USERNAME"\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-40234-0.sysdata.xml
C:\Users\"USERNAME"\AppData\Local\Temp\WER13A2.tmp.version.txt

Also check in WERCON - you should be able to get info on both BSODs and copies of those files.
START | wercon | view Problem History -- 2x-click on an entry for add'l information

If the repeat-quote offensive to anyone, you have my apologies.

Hi Andy -

I'm not surprised those files are no longer around. They are part of WERCON - Windows Error Reporting (Problem Reports and Solutions). Once you closed the screen that showed their names to you, they were gone. You could probably find them again in WERCON, but at this time, they won't be needed.

If you want to keep the system - that's fine - it is your system and of course your decision to make. When I suggested returning the system, my thoughts were surrounding the 0x1a bugcheck itself - which in many cases I have seen related to a hardware problem, specifically RAM. An HP laptop here is the 4th - the other 3 kept freezing and I returned them. #4 works fine and is now running Windows 7 x64 without incident.

I will be glad to run the dumps for you, but I prefer to have system information to refer to as I process them.

Please download Live SysInternals AutoRuns from Microsoft TechNet and SAVE it to your DOCUMENTS folder.
http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe

Next, download the attached zip and extract the lone batch script file to your DESKTOP. Then go to desktop, RIGHT-click on the batch file icon and select "Run as Administrator".

It will run for approximately 4-8 minutes. You'll see status info scroll on the cmd/DOS screen. Other windows will open and close. No user interaction is required during this process - just let it run. It may appear to "hang" a few times - curser blinking on the DOS screen, but it is not hanging... just working. This app dumps Event Viewer records, executes msinfo32, AutoRuns, systeminfo, driverquery, WMI, etc... and picks up the mini kernel dump files. The resulting output can be found in a newly created sub-folder of Documents and is named Vista_BSOD_Support.

Also, run a Vista System Health Report - save in HTML default format:
START | type perfmon /report into the start-search box - a viewer will appear and perfmon will run for about 60 seconds. Save as an HTML file (HTML is the default file extension - you'll see it when you go to save it).

To zip files in Vista - simply RIGHT-click on the Vista_BSOD_Support folder and select "send to compressed (zipped) folder" - you'll then find a file named Vista_BSOD_Support.zip - now do the same with the PERFMON HTML file - right-click, send to compressed/zipped folder. Look for the name you chose, but with a ZIP file extention.

Any ? - please let me know.

Regards. . .

Hello all.

Andy, your BSOD is caused by a Memory Management Error (severe).
This is probably caused by bad RAM. The best fix is to simply take it back and get a new system as suggested by JCGriff above.

@JCGriff: All that is not necessary (bleah still can't spell that). Bad RAM would cause all that, and with it being a new system, it is MUCH easier to just return it.

If you really want to keep that EXACT system, then you could go buy some new RAM sticks, but I think that is a waste. But it is your choice.

Andy, you do realize that your performance report is in German? I am afraid I don't know quite that much...

I still recommend going and exchanging the system.

Re: First Bsod - System Specs please!

How are you guys going to help troubleshoot a BSOD without system specs???

I read through this entire thread and noticed no on asked about system specs; nor are they supplied by the OP (Andy1022). When trying to troubleshoot a BSOD, system specs become enormously important as just about anything can cause it.

Outside of that, being that this is a new system, I'd take it back for repairs or exchange.

Just my two cents

Hey i basically have the same problem when i got my laptop. This happened to me about 6 times but i would just restore my comuter on startup repair. But today was weird it could not restore so i tried to boot from disks and did memory diagnostic and it somehow fixed itself. It was either a temerary fix or a permanant I dont know because I'm not computer handy.

My Computer

I've done some memmory scanning with both windows memmory diagnostics tool and memtest. And both said no errors in ram memory so I think the problem lies in the computers drivers. And heres my system specs:

(drivers)
OS: Windows vista Home premium x64 SP1
Motherbord: MSI K9A2 Neo-F AM2 (*)
CPU: AMD phenom 8650 (*)
Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT (Latest drivers downloaded)
Power: Chieftec 500W PSU (*)
Hard drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500gb 32mb cache(*)

Keyboard: Logitech UltraX premium keyboard (no drivers)
Network: Gigabyte GN-WB01GS (Latest drivers downloaded)
Touch pad: Wacom bamboo fun (Installed from CD)

*=No drivers/drivers installed in the store

I'm going to be updating all drivers to see if the BSODs stop happening.
