NOTE: This will let you change the default fonts for most of the Windows 7 dialog box text and button text through the registry.
1. Open the Start Menu.
2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type regedit and press Enter.
3. Click on the Continue button in the UAC prompt.

Modify2.jpg

8. Close regedit.
9. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply the changes.

OPTION THREE
Change All Default Fonts

NOTE: This will let you change the default fonts used by Vista using the registry.
1. To Change Default Fonts Using a REG File Download
NOTE: This changes the default fonts in Vista to the Tahoma font. You could use this REG file download to make doing step 2 below easier by editing the REG file for the font you want to use instead of Tahoma.
A) Click on the Download button below, and download the file below.
Set_Tahoma_Default_Font.reg
download

B) Click on Save, and save the .reg file to the desktop.
C) Right click the downloaded .reg file and click on Merge.
D) Click on Run, Yes, Yes, and OK when prompted.
E) Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply changes.
F) When done, you can delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

2. To Manually Change Default Fonts by Creating a REG File
NOTE: The REG file in step 1 is the same as in step 2B below. You can use it and just edit the font that you would like to use instead of Tahoma in step below.
A) Open Notepad.
B) Copy and Paste the code below into Notepad.
Code:
[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT][/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT][HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts][/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]"Segoe UI (TrueType)"=""[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]"Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)"=""[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]"Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)"=""[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]"Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)"=""[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT][/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT][HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes][/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]"Segoe UI"="Tahoma"[/INDENT][/INDENT]
[INDENT][INDENT]
All-1.jpg

C) In Notepad, edit Tahoma in quotes with the name of the font that you would like to use in instead with it still in quotes. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: You can get the name of the font from the font folder location C:\Windows\Fonts. Be sure that you use the exact same font name that is listed. Do not include the Regular part in the font name. For example, I would type Impact instead of Impact Regular.
All-2.jpgAll-3.jpg

D) In Notepad, click on File (Menu bar) and Save As. (see screenshot below)
All-4.jpg

E) Type in a name you would like with a .reg file extension (ex: Impact-Fonts.reg), then click on the Save button. (see screenshot below)
All-5.jpg

D) Right click the created .reg file and click on Merge.
E) Click on Yes, Yes, and OK when prompted.
F) Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply changes.

3. To Restore the Default Fonts
NOTE: This will undo all changes that you made using either step 1 or step 2 above, and restore the original default fonts used by Windows 7.
A) Click on the Download button below, and download the file below.
Default_Fonts.reg

That's it,
Shawn

O'Connel,

It should only change system settings and files, not your personal data. I would recommend to back up anything that you do not want to lose just to be safe though.

Hello 386sky,

I'm not sure if a font from a Mac would work in Vista. Normally you would just drag and drop the font into that folder to install it.

O'Connel,

Did you already try the tutorial to see if you can change the fonts back to how you want them for each item?

If yes, then you may be able to do a Repair (upgrade) install instead of a clean install. See the NOTE box at that link to see if you can.

I tried to change the font default from Times New Roman 10 to Arial 12 which was always so easy in XP but when I followed Brink's suggestion, regedit, did not succeed.

Hello Deanooo, and welcome to Vista Forums.

If you mean from OPTION ONE (Step One), then you can only use the actual name of the font and not any size with it.

Were you not able to change them using Step Two?

I would like to get rid of the Times New Roman default and make Arial my default. I would also like to change the font size from 10 default to a 12. I am new to Vista and didn't have this type of problem with XP. Thank you for posting.

Deanooo,

The default font in Vista is Segoe UI 9 pt. What program or item has Times New Roman as the default?

I had to reinstall Vista again after a hard drive failure, and realised i never got round to posting the solution to the prompt box issue lol.

It consists of a few registry changes, but now i've figured it out, it only takes about 5 minutes at most. (That is in addition to doing the changes listed in the guide earlier in this thread).

Open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts

Once inside that key, youll need to edit the following entries:

Segoe UI (TrueType)
Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)
Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)
Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)

They will by default contain segoeui.ttf/segoeuib.ttf/segoeuiz.ttf/segoeuii.ttf, you'll need to change the value to the ttf file for the font you want to use, and it will point it to that font, in my case i pointed it to verdana.ttf/verdanab.ttf/verdanaz.ttf/verdanai.ttf.

If you are running 64 bit Vista, you'll need to repeat the process in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts.

Now sadly, Vista is a little too smart for that to work on it's own. Essentially it looks for Segoe UI as the font for prompt boxes / taskbar / clock etc, and when that isn't available it switches to the next available, which is Segoe UI Italic, then bold etc. Once all Segoe UI variations are pointed at your chosen font, Vista will default to using System as the font for those items.

This is the part it took me a little while to suss out, basically you have to create a font subsitute set of keys, so that when Segoe UI is unavailable it will switch to your desired font. For this you need to navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes

Create 4 new String Values, titled:
Segoe UI
Segoe UI Bold
Segoe UI Bold Italic
Segoe UI Italic

Set the value for each of these keys to your desired font, in my case it was setup as below:

Segoe UI = Verdana
Segoe UI Bold = Verdana Bold
Segoe UI Bold Italic = Verdana Bold Italic
Segoe UI Italic = Verdana Italic

Now if you log off / log back on, you should see that all the instances that still had Segoe UI as the font, will now have changed to Verdana (or whatever font you chose).

The only thing you have to bear in mind, is you need to choose a replacement font that has the same number of variations as Segoe UI does. Originally i wanted to use Tahoma, but that doesn't have an Italic / Italic Bold variation, so i went for Verdana instead.

Hope this helps anyone still struggling with the crazy Vista fonts.

Hello Brigade, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Not sure if this is what you mean, but you would need to click on the small triangles to the left of the folders (keys) in the left pane to expand them to get to the path at step 5.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
