FTP Help

Hi All,
I was hoping for a (hopefully!) easy solution for a problem I've had for the last 2-3 days:

There's an FTP that I need access to to move files back and forth between co-workers. I use Windows Explorer to access this, normally with no issues.....just type in the ftp address, and there it is.

Now whenever I do this, I get an error: This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.

I went into the Set Associations control panel, but don't know what extension to change, as it's not really a "file", and there's no mention anywhere of FTP. Everyone else that uses the FTP doesn't have an issue, so it's not a problem with the ftp itself.

Any words of wisdom???

1. Open Control Panel via your Start Menu and open Internet Options.

2. Select the Advanced Tab.

3. Scroll down and check "Enable FTP Folder View (Outside of Internet Explorer)"

4. If you have problems, particularly with DSL connections and firewalls, also select "Use Passive FTP (for DSL Modem and Firewall Compatibility)" I don't know what this options actually does though!

Hope this fixes your problem.

Both of these options are already checked.

Ugh - don't you just HATE when things stop working all of a sudden? LOL

Hi Bob,

I am working on it now, but it is difficult (I think you already know!). What I am trying to work out is how to access an ftp through Windows Explorer through the command prompt. I can do normal folders but unfortunately I am struggling with ftp. I hope I can work it out soon.

Can you please start up regedit, and navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ftp\shell\open\command and tell me what your default value is in your command folder.

Here is a picture of mine so you know exactly what I mean (I use Firefox rather than IE or Windows Explorer so don't copy my value!):



Just trying to track down the command line arguments for ftp for Windows Explorer then I may be able to solve your problem! Maybe.

Hope I can eventually fix your problem. Will keep working on it.

Hi Richard,

Yes....extremely difficult! For some reason, I don't have ftp under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (see my attached screenshot)

I actually don't use IE either (I'm an Opera man), so no worries about changing the values!

[FONT=&quot]This is a bit weird. As a test, I re-named my ftp folder to ftp.bak to see if I could re-create your symptoms. However, Windows recreated a new ftp folder for IE automatically. I did nothing. Therefore you should have an ftp folder even if you manually delete it. I have attached a registry file of the standard IE ftp folder. Hopefully if you install this your ftp should work again. However the new question is why the folder was not recreated. You should try sfc /scannow from the command prompt though I doubt it will help.[/FONT]

Hi Bob,

I don't really know why it just disappeared. There are many possibilities, all are unlikely. Possibly a program tried to change the assosiation and messed it up either because it crashed or was badly coded. It is very strange. If nothing else is broken, just pretend nothing happened. If you have any more problems, just start a new thread or reply back in the next few days.

Really glad I managed to help and it is now working.

where is this mythical .reg file? would be very helpful

Hi Richard,

I am facing same problem when trying to open FTP from window explorer. I am able to track down my registry key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT for iexplorer. Can you please help me correct this issue with FTP.
