Help please, HP Pavilion dv6500 with Windows Vista crashed

I'm crashing now. Perhaps a new day will bring a new thought that I'm missing for some reason. In the meantime, just to check, when you get C:\> type dir | more and enter and see what it contains and if it seems to contain what's normally in C:\. Especially look for a Windows folder.

Good night. Talk to you soon.

I don't see any windows folder

I don't know if it matters but I believe when I do repair computer it shows windows vista in the d drive not the c drive that I have seen other examples have. I think I am going to call it a night as well. Best of luck again with the sleep and thanks a bunch for the help so far.

vista restore issues

I had the same issue any advice on how to fix it?
I got my Vista CD (includes recovery tools) and insert it in my computer. Loaded the recovery tools and tried Startup Repair, System Restore and Command Prompt.

Problems:

Startup Repair - Tried it 5 times, it tells that it couldn't detect a problem.

System Restore - Couldn't find a restore point to restore to.

Command Prompt - tried chkdsk /f, doesn't work; tried sfc /scannow, it says that windows resource protection could not perform the requested operations.

Any idea what I should do next?

Re: vista restore issues

I am not sure if Windows isn't located where it should be or what but I have run the SFC numerous times and I get the resource protection can't run requested operations. When I went to repair computer from the disk I created I noticed it says windows is on the d: I believe and most examples of that process show the c: having windows. I tried running the scan on the x: drive, c: drive and d: drive.

Re: vista restore issues

Please see http://www.vistax64.com/crashes-deb...hp-pavilion-dv6500-windows-vista-crashed.html where this issue has already been worked on extensively and it seems we ended with the problem that Vista is on D:\ rather than C:\ so the instructions on how to do the SFC and CHKDSK were using the wrong drive letter. I don't know why this second thread has been opened but it should be merged with the other one and I have requested that.

I have tried running the scan on the c,d, and x drives and still get the same error message that I was getting running on the c drive originally. Any ideas on what to try next?

If you get to D:\> then type dir | more and let's see if Vista is really on that drive.

At this point, I would then go to Richard's recommendation for a repair install (posted in the other thread but now merged with this one and listed above with the link to the procedure).

Ok, I think I tried this and came up with some type of error message saying I couldn't do this because I didn't have the right media. I re-ran the d: directory search and I do see windows 12/18/2010 5:43 <dir> windows

How did the meds and sleep go last night?

My Computer

All right. Now while in D:\> type cd Windows and enter. That should make it D:\Windows\> Now type cd System32 and enter. That should make it D:\Windows\System32\>. Now type sfc /scannow and enter and see what happens.

Can you tell me the exact word-for-word error message when you tried repair install? What media are you using to do it - I mean what type of disk is it and where did you get it?

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

P.S. I was up until 3:30AM or so and slept fine until about 8AM which was great. I'm hoping that is enough to let me stay up late enough so when I do go to sleep I'll be able to stay asleep until at least 4-5AM and thus avoid two separate sessions and get back to one. Thanks for asking.

I was able to get it right up until I ran the sfc scannow which comes back with the same error message as before-windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation.
As for trying what Rich said about installing, first it says I can't boot with the DVD I am supposed to already have Vista running, I can't get to the install screen without having the DVD already installed. 2nd the error message comes up after saying no to adding a product key:installation was cancelled-Windows can't open the required file E:\Sources\install.wim. The file doesn't exist. Mare sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code:0x80070002.

The disk is the one you had me make yesterday, so it came from whatever website that was. Hope this helps. It was just a typeo I ran it as sfc\scannow

Glad to hear things went fairly well with the amount of sleep.

My Computer

That pretty much confirms that Vista is on Drive D:\. I don't know why, but that seems to be the case. Were you in any type of dual boot setup before?

Did you type sfc scannow or sfc /scannow? If you omitted the slash then that could cause the error. If it was just a typo in your post, nevermind.

Thanks - and besides the error message, I need to know the media you are using. What is it exactly and where did you get it? Is it a genuine Vista Installation Disk or is it a Recovery Disk from the Manufacturer or what is it?

My Computer

I appreciate the help but how can I tell if I am running it as an administrator? The bar on my command prompt says administrator.x:\windows\system32\cmd.exe. So I think I am running as an administrator but I am not very computer savy.

My Computer

This is what you do
I think we are both talking about the cmd prompt
Go to search (by the start button)
in search type cmd
then as soon as it pops up, right click on it and then run as administrator. You will get the UAC asking you to put the password for an administrator
The cmd if done correctly will show c/windows/system32.
If you see that just type sfc /scannow and then hit enter

I apologize, I was just trying to help, while Lorien was off line. I did not realize that you could not reach the start button. The command prompt should function the same regardless of the method used to access it; try this
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/176471-elevated-command-prompt-shortcut-create.html
Hopefully, you can access the desktop to make the shortcut, but I realize that you may not have that ability.
If you cannot create the shortcut, it may be difficult to use the Elevated Command prompt, which is necessary for the SFC command.
