HP Laptop Won't Start

I have a laptop that is proving more and more obnoxious to troubleshoot.
The first problem it exhibited was a BSOD on startup: 0x50. I could not boot into safe mode even.
I read up a bit and it seemed to likely either be a RAM or HD issue. I booted from a Vista DVD to run a chkdsk. Every time I selected the partition for repair though, the computer would just turn off.
I booted from Linux and the HD seemed to be fine. I also popped it into a USB dock connected to my Windows 7 desktop, and it also appeared to be fine.
Next I ran MemTest86+ via USB on the laptop. The computer would simply turn off one to five minutes into the first pass.
I tried each DIMM separately with the same result. I then popped a separate DIMM, which I know works fine in my netbook, with the same result.
Just to indulge I also popped the HD from my netbook w/ an XP installation on it. The computer just restarts a few seconds after the XP splash screen pops up.
I also have run the stock start up diagnostics on the HD and RAM. It will successfully complete...sometimes. Usually, at no particular point within the diagnostic the computer just shuts down.
At this point overheating is worrying me a little, since it seems the longer I am working on it in one sitting, the less time there is between shutdown. I have dusted around the HD, RAM, CPU and exhaust grates, but have not taken off the entire bottom for further cleaning yet.

If you cannot, you have a hardware problem
If you can, save your stuff and report back

Did what you instructed. I am indeed able to back stuff up from ubuntu onto an external drive. What next?

Tried this to load from the recovery partition. It returned the same error, after loading windows files, going through the flash screen, and then loading with the cursor.

The BSOD is:
page fault in nonpaged area.
Stop: 0x00000050 (0xFFFFF98106C8F1F8, 0x1, 0xFFFFF8000D046D3E, 0x5)

How can I run the dump collection app if I cannot load windows? Am I able to do the same thing in linux?

See if you can boot with this procedure

If you create a recovery DVD, you may be able to boot to recovery options
Create Recovery DVD.
Hard Disc Controller must be set to IDE in BIOS and Bios must be set to boot from the CD Boot Priority - Change

The Vista recovery disk is used to boot Vista when it won't boot - to run Startup Repair, System Restore, access a Command Line, Recover using a Vista Backup Image, etc.
System Recovery Options. Choose an option tht will not cause you to lose your stuff.

If Vista will not start now, boot the Recovery CD to run Startup Repair which automates System Restore as well as numerous other tests including System File Checker which can repair system files which are not corrupted beyond repair.

If Vista still will not start, try booting into Safe Mode to run sfc /scannow to repair System files.

Below is a bulletin distributed by MS to explain the start up procedure when Windows will not boot.
Startup Repair. Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent Windows from starting. Startup Repair is located on the System Recovery Options menu, which is on the Windows Vista installation disc. If your computer has preinstalled recovery options, it might also be stored on your computer's hard disk. For more information, see Startup Repair: frequently asked questions and What are the system recovery options in Windows Vista? If your computer does not include Startup Repair, your computer manufacturer might have customized or replaced the tool. Check the information that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's website.
Change restart settings in safe mode. If your computer is stuck in a loop where Windows fails, attempts to restart, and then fails again repeatedly, restart your computer in safe mode and select the Disable automatic restart on system failure checkbox. For more information, see Advanced startup options (including safe mode).
Reinstall. If no other options have solved the problem, and you are sure that your computer's hardware is functioning normally, you might need to reinstall Windows. A custom (clean) installation of Windows will permanently delete all of the files on your computer and reinstall Windows, so only use this option if all other recovery options have been unsuccessful. After the installation, you will need to reinstall your programs and restore your files from backup copies. For more information, see Installing and reinstalling Windows**.

If you can boot, follow my posting instructions from my last post.
If you cannot you should try to get an install DVD for cost from your computer manufacturer. It will cost about $25.00 or you can try to borrow from a friend

Sorry for the delay.

The computer blue screens and either turns off or restarts when I use the Vista DVD after I select the volume for recovery, start loading the desktop for safe mode, and the desktop for the recovery partition.

I can't get in anywhere

Sounds like a hardware or overheating. Have you cleaned the computer of dust, etc., lately.

I cleaned out the fan exhausts as well as the cpu and ram throughout this. Haven't cracked it open to clean anywhere else though.

We know that it is not hardware, since you were able to install Ubuntu. Strange that the factory reinstallation did not work. Just thinking out loud, now, Maybe virus or Malware.
Can you get to system restore with safe mode?

Nope. It seems any means of getting to a windows environment results in a blue screen

If you cant get it to work with factory reinstallation, you might want to call the manufacturer of your computer and try to get install DVDs for cost, about $25.00
