I have Vista, but unable to open docx email attachments

I'm hoping someone will be able to help.

I have Vista and install all Microsoft updates regularly on my home computer.

However, whenever I receive an email attachment .docx, pptx, & so on I am unable to access the file. It saves as a WinRAR file (zipped, in other words) and when I attempt to unzip it, I just get blank files.

My email is on a university server. When I access attached files from my work computer, they are fine. I only have the problem when I try to access the files from home. As you can imagine, most files these days are .docx, so it is quite frustrating.

Can anyone help me solve this ?

So this is only happening when you get the file from email? If you save the file from another location like school to a USB device and open at home it opens fine?

Yes, it's the only time I have a problem, when someone sends me a .docx (or any x) file as an email attachment.

Come to think of it, this doesn't happen when a docx is attached to my gmail account.

Maybe it's a problem with the server, not me?
