IE9: Last Supported Browser for Vista

Sounds good! You might want to visit Qualys SSL Labs with IE9 (and your other old browsers). I would definitely disable TLS 1.0; 1.1 optional.

I went to your link in IE 9. The only problem it showed is a vulnerability to Poodle. To get around that, it says to disable SSL 3.0. However, it then says that disabling the latter will prevent one from using any of the TSL options. Overall, enabling TLS 1.2 doesn't do anything for me. One of the sites (accuradio.com) I go to frequently, will open but is inoperable. Pandora simply tells me that my browser is out of date.

I ran that link in Opera and it didn't list any problems other than a few "weak" items which were the same as in IE 9.

You should have disabled SSL years ago - in fact you shouldn't have been using IE9 at all without both the latest security updates and support for TLS 1.2. Off topic, but you shouldn't be using a 2016 version of Opera either. (Of course that's easy for me to say, since I use Windows 10 about 99 percent of the time these days.)

Now that this thread has reached 2 pages, I should mention that its reason for existence is post #1. I have made some changes there.

I saw your changes. I should mention that the security update that superseded the first one was installed when I did all the Win 2008 updates through December 2018.

My IE9 is now patched to April 2019. (That is not a typo: I did not mean to write April 2017.)



Naysayers speculate that the presence of Windows 6.0 patches less than 2 years old might cause all manner of problems. I hate to disappoint them, but I am not experiencing any problems.



January 2020 Edit: In post #1 my instructions include "install the latest Server 2008 cumulative update for IE9 from Microsoft Update Catalog." That might no longer be possible for Windows 6.0 systems that have not been updated with SHA-2 Code Signing Support. In that case, the last cumulative update for IE9 with an sha1 digital signature was KB4507434.
