Internet Explorer 8 released, progress unmistakable

The final build of Internet Explorer 8 has been released in 25 languages. You can also grab the download directly from these links: Windows XP 32-bit (16.1 MB), Windows XP 64-bit (32.3 MB), Windows Server 2003 32-bit (16.0 MB), Windows Server 2003 64-bit (32.3 MB), Windows Vista 32-bit (13.2 MB), Windows Vista 64-bit (24.3 MB), Windows Server 2008 32-bit (13.2 MB), and Windows Server 2008 64-bit (24.3 MB).

The public Windows 7 beta is not being updated, and although Microsoft released an update for IE8 for Windows 7 in February, the next update is not likely to arrive until the Windows 7 Release Candidate next month. For everyone else, in the coming weeks Microsoft will put IE8 out as an optional download on Windows Update and then later roll it out to users via Automatic Updates. A quick note to all the IT administrators out there reading this post: the IE8 blocker toolkit is already available, so make sure you get acquainted with it if you're planning on avoiding IE8 when it's released via Microsoft's update channels.

Did you read the link that sygnus21 provided Brummy as that explains how Compatibility Mode works.?
I tried in compatibility mode and tried the IE8 without the add ons as well but I am unable to fix it. I found an update for IE8 and installed with high hopes, again the same problem, I like IE8 for it's speed and the look of it. IE7 works well except the fact that its very slow. Thanks again.

I have two problems with IE8, I am unable to open up any links or switch form Vistax64 to sevenforums but I can switch from sevenforums to vistax64,the second being unable to open up pages within a web site. I hope someone will come up with a solution in due course and I'll have to wait.
I am having a similar set of problems.

1. The empty space at the top of the browser does not respond to right-clicks, ie. the blank area next to the tabs. So I can't access the menus that are under that.

2. Any link, from any page, on any website, anywhere, even on the stock 'what do you want to do next?' page in IE8 that would open a new tab, will open the tab, say "connecting.." and just hang. Before you mention "compatibility mode" let me stress, this happens on the stock new page screen. This is a major problem.

This is on Vista x64 Ultimate. It happens with 32-bit and 64-bit browsers.

Were you running the beta program at first? If so, you needed to uninstall it before installing the "final" version. Also where did you get IE8 from? Get it here - Internet Explorer 8, the link Slimy provided. This will also insure you get the correct version for your OS, i.e. if you have a 64-bit OS, you'll need to download the 64-bit version...even if you only plan on using IE 32. The base file needs to match the OS.

You may have to do an uninstall, then reinstall.

Good luck

See above post. Also, If you downloaded the correct file, which is the "final" version, you shouldn't have any seperate "updates" as any updates are automatically installed with IE8 final. The fact that you "found an update for IE8" makes me think you have a beta version. I just checked Windows Update and found no updates for IE8... and I downloaded IE8 "final" yesterday!

Thank you for the information, you are right that update is for WindowsXP but I have installed the right version. Version 8.0.6001.18702.

When I right click a link and click open in new tab I get "connecting"in new tab but nothing happens.

I never ran any IE8 beta on this laptop. Also, trying to run the "incorrect" IE8 will not install. Also, as I said, it happens with 32-bit and 64-bit browsers, indicating I installed the right one.

I uninstalled and reinstalled three times.

I figured out my problem. For no apparent reason, IE8 needs the *print spooler* to be running on first start. I enabled the print spooler service, ran IE8, and the issues I had cleared up instantly. I stopped the spooler and my tab bar functionality remains.

I installed it this morning and have used it a couple times: some video here, a little remote logging in to my Microsoft Exchange account there. Seems fine.

For us 64-bit users it seems that the IE8 Install program gave us both the 32-bit and the 64-bit Explorers.

I don't know what to think about that.

Still no flash interactivity nor video in the 64-bit version. MS is a big bunch of losers.

Now that I have it installed the only thing I'm going to use it for is Windows Update.

And the rest will all be the awesomeness that is Mozilla Minefield.

What, you don't like options? BTW, the 64-bit versions of both XP and Vista come with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of IE6 and IE7, respectively. The 64-bit version just isn't the default, because many plug-ins still don't support it (Flash being the most important one). However, they're there.

What he said :D

I'll also add that "Microsoft" has noting to do with "Adobe's" failure to provide a 64-bit version of Flash.

Thanks subzero, your suggestion of Print Spooler setting to Automatic worked for me and my IE8 working very well.

Ok, I downloaded and installed IE 8 over IE 8 RC 1. Now, it seems slower than before when I open up IE 8. In RC 1, IE would load in just a little over 1 second. Now it takes well over 5 seconds. I tried to uninstall IE 8 RC 1 from the control panel but it does not exist in the add/remove programs. So where can I find RC 1 to remove and reinstall IE 8.

I always have to log into various sites with IE8. Is there a setting that is clearing out cookies?

Or would CCleaner be responsible?

To be absolutely sure, you can uncheck Cookies and Temporary Internet Files.
Alternatively, you can go to Options > Cookies, and choose which ones you want to keep.

OK, here's a weird one - http://www.rage3d.com/ will not display properly under IE8 Final. This has also been noted by one other person at rage3d thus far - http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?t=33943075. I'll also add that what ever happened to cause this happened sometime Wednsday, because I had visited it that night and things well working fine till last night. This was with IE8 Final.

Rage3d.com problem.JPG

Here's the weird thing, Windows 7 x64 RC1 with IE8 beta displays the site, Windows XP Pro with IE8 RC1 displays the site correctly as well. But IE8 final on my Vista HD does not. And the other person on rage3d who's also having the problem is also using IE8 final, though he's under XP. So this is definitely a problem with IE8 Final.

And deleting temp files, cookies, history, using compatibility mode, protected mode on or off has no effect. Right now I'm on XP using IE8 RC1 to navigate between here and rage3d. I'll go back to Vista after this post to see if rebooting the machine fixed the problem.

So my question - can anyone else duplicate this issue under IE8 "Final"???

Thanks

Does IE8 have the ability to show print review icon on tool bar?
Disappeared in IE7; annoying:(
Are you saying that you don't have a printer icon showing in your IE7 ? I have one showing in mine it's on the right hand side, you have Home, RSS, Printer, Page and Tools, if you click the arrow beside the printer icon the drop down shows print, print preview and page setup.
