I use networked LaCie D2 Firewire 800 drives till I add the other RAID arrays to my workstation. They are on my Tape server for faster backups. You can get disk thrashing accessing applications and data on another partitions of your boot and system disk or array.

Ok, I put the BIOS settings on default, put my CD-rom drive as first boot priority and booted with the Installation disk. I doesn't give me a screen to reinstall or install vista or antything. First I have to press any key to boot from VD or DVD, then black screen saying Windows is loading files and then it just boots up and I get stuck on the like blue screen with white lines and it does nothing...
Anything I forgot?

Did you remove all non-essential adapters and controllers. Blue screen with white lines? Sounds like video adapter problem. What is your hardware and power supply specs? Did you upgrade the BIOS on your motherboard to address Vista and your video card issues?

No, my sound card is still in there, I'll take it out. Should I take out the LAN card as well? No no, that's not what I meant. I meant that typical Vista background with the blu and the curves... Sorry that wasn't clear. But I don't have to uninstall anything or something in order to be able to reinstall the vista right?

You should be able to remove all your partitions and reinstall clean with unallocated space. What size power supply do you have and what is your hardware? I have seen a too small 12V rail current level cause your issues.

My power supply is 350W. NVIDIA GeForce 6600TD, Samsung 200 Gb hard drive, Foxconn 6150K8MA mobo, Pioneer 20xDVD RW, Nec DVD R (I installed that quite recently, maybe it's eating too much power?), Twinmos 2x512Mb DDR PC3200, AMD Athlon 64 4000+ 2.4 GHz, running at 2.8 GHz.

350W is very weak. You have a decent processor. I would suggest a decent power supply.

You are also overclocking. It is not a best practice for a new install to install with overclocking being done. Reset your CPU and timing to default.

Hi Amplid,

I presume that you have got the manual for your motherboard - if not you can download a copy here: Foxconn - Products: Motherboard
Follow the instructions in the section headed '[FONT=Arial,Bold][FONT=Arial,Bold]Clear CMOS Jumper: CLR_CMOS' (page 22 (hard copy) or page 29 (PDF version)). This should restore all BIOS settings to their default and should reset your CPU frequency to its normal value.[/FONT][/FONT]
In addition, your board also supports on-board graphics. Since you are having problems, you need to reduce your system to its bare minimum. Remove your graphics card and use the on-board graphics instead. You can install the graphics card later.

Voila, I reset the BIOS to default using CMOS jumper and I'm now on my motherboards onboard video card (GeForce 6100... should I instal the driver is it not worth the effort?). Now should try the reinstall again?

Hi Amplid,
Don't worry too much about your WEI. On-board graphics share some of the main system memory, which, at just 1GB, is inadequate for Vista, let alone a 64-bit system. Increase the amount of memory to 2GB and you should see an improvement. You are also running a generic driver that is supplied on the Vista disk. This driver is sufficient to allow your system to run, however for best results you need to install the latest WHQL driver. Before you do that, however, you can reinstall your graphics card and check the difference in your WEI. This should show an improvement, even with the generic driver, because the card is able to access its own local memory instead of relying on the system RAM. Having reinstalled your graphics card, you can now install the driver. The current WHQL version available from NVidia is 175.16 (link given below). As your graphics card is now considered to be towards the lower end of the market, you shouldn't expect to get a WEI much higher than 3.5, even with the latest driver. To improve your WEI, you will need to upgrade your graphics card as well as increasing your system RAM as mentioned earlier. If you wish to have hardware support for DX10, you will need an 8xxx series card (or above). My current card is an 8800GT which scores 5.9 in both graphics components of the WEI assessment. As Michael said in post #109, you should also consider upgrading your power supply as well. A good rule of thumb is to take the power requirement for each component and add 10% to that value. Add all these together and add 10% to the result. This will ensure that you have sufficient power capacity for your system in its current state and also provide sufficient in reserve for if and when you choose to upgrade.
It is possible that your problems have, in some part, been caused by your CPU running faster than its rated speed. Not all CPUs are able to run at a faster than standard rate - even 2 identical models cut from the same wafer can have different performance in this respect. Some, providing that they have adequate cooling, can be overclocked by as much as 25% or more without giving any operational problems whereas others will fail to run reliably at other than the stock clock frequency and rating.

Well Dwarf, my old video card actually scored 3.9 And I am currently running directx 10 so...:d Where can I see the power needs for my hardware? In BIOS?
But I'm confused.. Should I still reinstall vista or not?

If Vista is stable, don't reinstall. Replace your power supply and retry your video card. You can try a PS/2 adapter and see if it resolves some issues. What else is in the event viewer?

An error about an application and a warning with something about the registry in it it says 3 user registry handles leaked. (trojan?) Error on Ntfs too, I have to run chkdsk and still the windows update that doesn't work. Also NMSAccessU service failed to start and then the kerberos security package thing and that GEARA driver under systemroot who has been blocked due to incompatibility...
