I allowed the automatic update to install the above on the 29th Jan 2008. I do not find any issues afterwards. I am not sure if it'd made any improved in performance.

Hello Peppurr, I just let it upgrade & install as it said it was important. I haven't noticed any difference to the performance of my laptop, but it is probably wise to update it anyway. I am not enough of a computer geek :geek: to really appreciate how it has changed anything.

dont worry guys, its not a hacker attack, its a program that is needed by other applications to operate, without getting into much detail, its a runtime application like java, you need java for other programs to work, its a working platform.

I tried to install Windows Vista update Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847)x86 and after one hour it had failed to install - eventually showing Error 80070057. I tried again but it hung for half an hour at 0% of the download before I terminated it. I tried the update because it stated it was important. I wonder when Microsoft will fix this and I hope it has not already played havoc with my system! Very annoying! Scorpio Moon

Hello all,
Just to let you all know that I have installed this update without any problems (so far anyway!). It was a very large download 48MB and took around 2o minutes from download to desktop after restart.

I have had some serious issues in the past with Windows Update pushing through updates that have caused my sytem to crash so I usually check around first to see if anyone has any problems..

Thank you again.

It installed fine on my machine - BUT, although I can't be completely sure it's caused by this SP, after that update I found that bootup was very distinctly slower, with a lot more disk churning. It's slower now at the black screen stage after the boot screen, then takes longer too at the Welcome screen, then the screen goes black again with an empty taskbar showing, for a second or so (which it never did before), and finally the desktop appears, and then there's a lot more disk churning for 10 to 15 seconds before the autostart programs start appearing in the system tray - and then in the later part of the autostart programs' launching sequence the disk churning becomes very intense and continues for a short while afterwards - though not as long as in the bad old days when I had Superfetch enabled.

I've checked to ensure that Superfetch is still disabled, and File Indexing too.

I have Anvir Task Manager, which has an excellent disk activity monitor, but I can't tell exactly which program is doing most of the disk churning, my firewall (Outpost) and antivirus (Avira Antivir Premium), and 'system' (whatever that process is) all being the most active at that time - all very reasonable-looking, except that all that churning like that wasn't occurring before the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 was installed. I don't know at all what causes all the extra disk activity and delays earlier in the boot sequence, because Anvir Task Manager isn't loaded then.

Apart from that I don't notice any other loss of performance.

It's a rollup package with old and new fixes for .NET 1, 2, 3 & 3.5.
If you need .NET just installed it (Why not ey?) if you do not require .NET uninstall all of 'm and neglect them in the updates list. Why install something you do not need? Waste of space and additional security risks!

:) What a nice idea - uninstall the lot! How I'd love to do just that - and indeed I would have done that some time ago, apart from one little thing! Unfortunately, I have various programs that do require particular versions of .NET Framework, so I'm having to just 'grin and bear it', despite the obscene size of those packages!

Yeah, same here and for a lot off people everywhere. Hope they won't be surprising users with huge updates again like that. It's the size of a Windows or Office Service Pack. Hope it replaces as much space as it adds...

It is now March 4th and I am finally back online having been without my PC or internet access for one month! I will never, EVER accept another Microsoft service pack update without consulting their helpline first - which I might add, took me ages to find as the number was well hidden in their website. The service pack trashed my system and caused it to go into a repeating loop at Startup and I could not access the system. They could not fix it and had to order a Restore disc from Germany which took 10 days to arrive as the UK was out of stock. Naturally, it wiped everything on the PC including the drivers and I have spent hours on the phone to Microsoft and also to MESH my computer manufacturers, and had to have the links sent to my workplace and I had to forward them to my neighbour so that I could dowload to my memory stick. This happened 4 times in all, as there was never a complete set of drivers sent and I finally resorted to the MESH software helpline which costs £1 per minute - so god knows what the cost will be - and believe it or not this was the 2nd time an update has done this to my PC and last time I reinstalled Vista the helpline cost me £185!!!! So I am seriously displeased! It is sheer vandalism and frankly, the loss of earnings this has caused through leaving work early to be in time for the 6pm cut-off point for the Microsoft helpline has cost me very dear. Disgraceful!
