Mystery BSOD problem

Alright, here is what i found:

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (7f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)

DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: vista_driver_fault

MODULE NAME: amdk8.sys

Reinstall your amd cpu drivers. amdk8.sys is a cpu driver for AMD.

This is usually caused by that driver going on an incorrectly addressed part of the memory.

If overclocking, set everything back to default.

Also try to run memtest86 to check for memory problems.

If you have the cool and quiet technology on your motherboard, try to disable it.

Good luck and post your results.

Re-install your chipset drivers and in vista set your power options to high.
Go into the Bios and disable all power saving options, especially the CPU power saving options.
Can you confirm that you have replaced the amdk8.sys driver file.
This all comes back to this file, or at least that is what the dump files are saying, so until this file has been eliminated we cant move forward.

I was looking around on google, and the amdk8.sys file is the file that helps the processor use the Cool and Quiet technology from AMD, disable that feature (perhaps from the bios or whatever way).

Stoney, did i interpret the minidump correctly?

Yes you did, good work.
The problem seems to be around the CPU and/or driver.
When i first started i went through all the old BSOD posts and tried to decipher them without looking at the the answers, its good practise, what you will find though, is that its not as hard as you first thought it was, i thought it was black magic at first. lol.
If you ever need any help just ask, although i have not been doing it that long myself. You learn something new with each one.

Hold on, I thought I was supposed to keep amdk8.sys. im pretty sure that the one I have in is the most recent. i found it on the internet on freedrive.com. cool and quiet was disabled already, but there was something called AMD visualization or something like that. It say something else too but the first AMD visualization is the only thing enabled. I set the power to high.

Here's where my serious inexperience comes into play. I'm not sure how to re-install a chipset (or what the chipset is beyond the processor.) Could you point me in the right direction?

My Computer

You will need to go to your MB manufacturers site for the chipset drivers.
Also, don't forget to monitor the CPU temps.

Apparently, this is often associated with memory problems. You said you had recently replaced the RAM. Is it all the same? Compatible with motherboard? Do you need to set any special BIOS settings for it?

See Microsoft Online Crash Analysis.

Getting beyond my pay grade; sorry about that.

You might want to try _Tech Support Forum. They've got a number of Microsoft techies there who know their stuff. If you do, make sure you post a list of everything you've already tried so they know immediately what didn't work.

Although I agree that TSF has a great staff, I must insist that the staff here is just as capable. Although, I am not an expert when it comes to BSOD, may I suggest that I contact someone with extensive knowledge in this field, so that you may be helped.

No offense taken ED. I just want to give the Thread Starter full advantage of our surperb knowledge regarding the BSOD, before he moves on.

You have given the thread starter excellent help and gave an honest opinion.. I cannot take offense at that.

I have seen some of these experts bring back a computer from the dead.

Richard has asked me to give a hand.

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder. Boot from the CD, and run it for at least 5 passes.

Uninstall AVG and then run this removal tool: http://download.avg.com/filedir/util/avg_arm_sup_____.dir/avgremover.exe

Then download and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
        use .trap on that value
Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.

I see the dump is from 16 May 2010 and driver updates mentioned, but have these Asus mobo utility drivers been updated?
Code:
[FONT=lucida console]ASACPI.sys Wed Oct 18 01:44:46 [COLOR=red]2006[/COLOR] (4535BF4E) - Asus ATK0110 ACPI Utility[/FONT]
[FONT=lucida console]AsIO.sys   Wed Dec 21 03:55:21 [COLOR=red]2005[/COLOR] (43A91879) - Asus "Cool n Quiet"[/FONT]

Go to Asus Support site --> ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

Slideshow for asio.sys update --> Asus mobo utility driver updates - jcgriff2 - Windows Live Slideshow

Choose Vista instead of Windows 7 for OS, but note that same asio.sys driver update is shared by both OS'. Same instructions apply for asacpi.sys - but look for ATK0110 mobo utility driver update.

Also update NVIDIA nForce SATA driver -
Code:
[FONT=lucida console]nvstor.sys   Wed Jun 06 16:34:41 [COLOR=red]2007[/COLOR] (46671A61)[/FONT]

NVIDIA --> Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Please be sure to follow advice by Jonathan King. If RAM checks out, drivers are updated, AVG replaced with MSE and BSODs persist, run the Driver Verifier.
