I did what you told me. I ended up having to do a system restore, but I had to get through it from booting up through the Gateway recovery center.

I used the system file checker and from the text file left over I notice that it said that the MSI inst file was corrupt. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

I also reinstalled drivers for the intel chipset from there. I don't think that was a good idea.

When I finally got back to where I was before. I got about 19 updates for vista and alot of them have failed to install. I tried toget them manually, and every time I did I got a "this update does not apply to your system message".

I see that Vista service pack SP2 is offered here for download. Would reinstalling that help?

Error 1402 is generated when some particular application is installed on the system with a corrupted User profile. To solve this problem you can follow the below mentioned methods:
  1. Check the system registry for errors and repair them
  2. Try to use a different User Profile
  3. Turn off User Profiles before running the setup
You better create a user profile and try to work out on that profile. Hope this help to get rid of this problem.

Downloading Vista SP2 and installing may help you in this problem.

Would reinstalling SP2 make it worse?

Alright, I created one. It took forever, because it was about 69 gigs for one thing, also, I had to use the "take ownership" command that I got from here to be able to copy "local setting" and "My documents" because Vista said I needed to permission to do it. It took about 5 hours.

I couldn't get to the programs I needed to uninstall, I went into program files and I did find it, but there wasn't a unistall to get rid of it. I did uninstall a program associated with it, but I didn't have a problem with that really in my main account.

Most install/uninstall problems are due to remnants of older versions and install/uninstall debris blocking normal install processes. Until you completely clean your system of any older versions, broken install or incomplete uninstall debris, you won't be able to install a new version or program. Vista uninstaller does a very poor job of removing all parts of a program.

You can do a manual uninstall with the help of Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, but the best way to get rid of all remnants of an older program, failed download and install, or failed uninstall is using Revo Uninstaller or Smarty uninstaller.

Ok, I uninstalled AVAST.

I just tried to install an update to the program in question and I got this error 1305. error reading from file C:\windows\installer\78da4.msi. verify that the file exists and try again.

Do I just run SP2?
