New CPU and Media Center and Media Player not working

I upgraded my cpu recently to a Q9400 Quad core cpu on a EVGA i680 SLI motherboard. I have Vista Ultimate x64 running on it with 2 TV tuners from ATI the ATI TV Wonder 600 and an internal digital card. Everything worked fine prior to the cpu upgrade. After the cpu upgrade (and firmware update to the motherboard). The Media Center crashes and does not recognize the TV tuners (although they apparently installed with no issues) and the Media Player also crashes if I try to do or play anything in it once opened. Did you upgrade directly from a dual or single core?


Here's what it sounds like to me... I have experienced the same issue upgrading my dual core 5000+ to a Phenom 9650 recently. The main thing that is happening is that since you have upgraded from a dual core to a quad core, you've effectively added another processor to the system. Windows Media Center and Media Player both use certain codecs to de-code the video stream. By DEFAULT the codecs are designed to run basically very efficiently with 50% of the activity on each core, assuming you had a dual-core CPU. Now, swapping this to a Quad-Core confuses the application because it is still trying to allocate 50% of the activity to each core of the processor, but it cannot do so as there are now FOUR cores instead of TWO. So generally, I recommend you reinstall all of your codecs ( This solved the problem for me ) and download the latest Windows Updates. Now, since you also have more power going to your new Quad-Core, you may also want to do a capacitor reset. ( Unplug power-cable and press/hold power button down for 1 minute and 30 seconds ) and then reboot the system and let it power back up as normal. If this doesn't resolve your issue, unfortunatley the only thing left to do is to backup your data and do a Full Format/Reinstallation of Windows

Not sure, the default i believe and maybe divx. I tried to pull the technical information from the About Media Player however it crashes when I do that and I cant get to it. I am not sure how else to pull it do you have any other ideas?

Grrrr. This is one of those strange things mate... I got WMP working for me again after simply reinstalling KLITE Codec Pack.. WAAAAH!?
Give me a little while to analyze your crash logs..

Appcrash because it can't find certain files it is looking for, or they have been misplaced. I recommend following the directions below and let me know the results. If this does not work, there may be some additional steps you can try.

Repairing Windows Vista Media Center files

You can use the following steps to repair the files that are a part of Windows Vista Media Center:

1. Click on the Start menu, choose All Programs, then Accessories, then right-click on the Command Prompt item and select Run as administrator
2. Click Continue to authorize opening a command prompt with administrative privileges
3. Run this command in the cmd prompt: sfc /scannow
4. The cmd prompt should list text stating "Beginning system scan. This process will take some time."
5. Wait for the scan to complete (this can take several minutes so be patient). This command will scan all protected system files and attempt to replace incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions
6. When the scan completes, the SFC tool will indicate whether or not it found any problems and whether or not it was able to fix them
7. If any errors are reported that SFC was unable to fix, there are steps in this knowledge base article and this how-to guide that explain how to locate and attempt to fix the errors
8. After fixing any errors that are found, try to use Windows Vista Media Center again

It founds some errors and stated that it fixed them however both the Media Center and Media Player are crashing as they were before.

Yikes.. Well.. The only thing I can recommend at this point is reinstalling Windows

That is a sad sad thing when the only way to fix a side feature of Windows is to reinstall the whole OS. But i thank you for your help.

Unfortunately :/

I had an issue with Sidebar once.. It got corrupted and no matter how hard I tried it would not stay on the desktop, and when it did, IT SHOWED UPSIDE DOWN AND BACKWARDS and clicking on it caused BSOD's.. I had to reinstall because of that... God that was really weird though - But your not the only one with issues with side-program.. This was a few months back...
