Recently wen't over to my dad's house he's using the windows vista which I don't use. And he recently updated the new Silverlight update and the Bing toolbar update. I have no idea why but after those patch's his Internet explorer no longer works. Any idea's? Would appreciate any idea's.

Small problem his computer has no other browser on it. I'm gonna try to burn a cd with a different version of internet explorer on it and couple different browser and install that way. Hopefully that will be enough to fix it.

Try for browser in safe mode

Do you have a key number and a Vista DVD?

Do you know how to restore factory specs?
You can get a vista DVD for cost, from MS or from your computer dealer.
YOu can reinstall.

No unfortunetly, He bought it pre-installed couple years ago. No dvd I might be able to find a key code but have to do some searching. If I can get the dvd I can figure out how to restore factory settings. I do have an XP that i'm not using so if it comes to that I can install that. But i'm hoping that I can fix his computer without having to resort to that.

If I can't fix it tomorrow i'll post the system info. Hopefully the solutions you gave me will be enough. All I now off hand is thats its HP and he's had it for two years.

Its so easy that I almost missed it
Uninstall the updates
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/92402-windows-update-uninstall.html

If that does not work, here are some other ideas

Here is one way. Restore the original factory settings. Dont know if it is for your model

IE is Probably frozen and this should work.
Try this go to alt cntrl delete
bring up task manger
end the iexplorer process

or if that does not work

Alt cntl delete
task IE.
end applicatiion for IE

This may unfreeze the browser.

as originally suggested installing another browser has got to be the simplest option ?

you can do this one of two ways without a browser .....

  1. on another PC download the installer package for your browser of choice such as firefox or opera or google chrome then simply transfer it on a flash drive to your dads PC ?
  2. download firefox using a command prompt by following these instructions

I agree with "ickymay", "chuckniner". You should definitely download a Internet Browser from your own computer and put it on a flash drive, then put it on your dad's computer. This is the most helpful suggestions from anyone at this point.
