Ongoing Update Problem

Hi Tom, having real problems now!:sick: As soon as the curser crosses the line into the quick launch/start area, it freezes and the only way to get it to move again is to reboot. Have tried a dozen times this morning to no avail. At the same time, at each reboot I get the configuration of updates.
I am going to backup everything onto my Ex. HD and then try once more. Meanwhile my wife is considering dumping this machine in favour of a laptop.:cry:
Will post back after the backup has finished.

00.16am
System back to more or less normal and will get back to the problem later today.:D

Hi Bob,

Sorry to hear that things worsened, but it sounds like they're okay now :) When you're up and running again, follow the instructions in my previous post please.

Tom

Hi again Tom. Never done a command prompt before but more than willing to give it a go. However, given that I have to copy and paste each one, I have got to be honest and say that I am not sure how many are there. I have given a number to what I think the different ones are. Is this right?

Hi Bob,

Sorry for the confusion. The regular helpers here use something called canned speeches to save ourselves having to write out the same thing over and over again - they're basically text files with formatted replies that we can then adapt to make them suitable for the thread we're dealing with. In this situation, I used my Command Prompt canned speech and put the command into it to make it tailored to you. What I should also have done is removed the line about having multiple commands because for you, we only need the one command - usually when I have to use command prompt, I use several commands.

So just to confirm, that is one command. Highlight all of the text in bold, right click and select copy. Then open command prompt, paste it in then press enter :)

Thank you for asking! Fortunately it wouldn't have done any harm in this situation. In future, if you aren't sure about something that I have instructed, please ask me like you did :)

Was that the info you needed Tom?

Sorry for the late reply, I moved into uni yesterday and things have been a little hectic recently! Now I'm going to struggle to find a time when I'm neither too drunk or hungover to reply :p

Great job for getting it working, that's exactly what I needed. As you can see, there's the corruption on that export.

Credit to niemiro for this, I couldn't have done this without him :)

p = 01110000
ð = 11110000

a = 01100001
` = 01100000

Each is only a single bit flip, despite looking completely different. Plauisble? Yes. Definite? No.

That's why we have the funny unicode symbols instead of the word Package :) To fix this, the best option is to delete the whole key and repopulate it with the correct values.

Backing Up Your Registry

  1. The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modifying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.
    Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot perform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.
  2. Download ERUNT
    (ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  3. Install ERUNT by following the prompts
    (use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  4. Start ERUNT
    (either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  5. Choose a location for the backup
    (the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  6. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  7. Press OK
  8. Press YES to create the folder.

Command Prompt

  1. Open your start menu and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it

    REG DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect\Microsoft-Windows-ServerFoundation-Base-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~et-EE~0.0.0.0" /f

  4. This will create a text file called tom982.txt in the root folder of your main drive (e.g. C:\tom982.txt). Please copy and paste the contents of this into your next post.

Registry Modifications

  1. Go to Start > Run to bring up the run box
  2. In the box, type notepad.exe and press OK to open Notepad
  3. Copy (Ctrl+C) all of the text in the following box and paste (Ctrl+V) it into Notepad

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component  Based  Servicing\PackageDetect\Microsoft-Windows-ServerFoundation-Base-LanguagePack-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~et-EE~0.0.0.0]

Tom. While, I've got to thank you for your tolerance, patience and understanding, there is no way that I would have the confidence to tackle the fix you've just come up with, without another machine to fall back on. So, we have now decided to go for a new laptop, and as soon as it is up and running, I will have a go at following your instructions on this machine. Meanwhile, thank you once again for the time that you have put in trying to help me out.;)

No worries, I understand how you must feel as this could seem a little overwhelming. If it would help ease your concern, I could remotely take control of your computer and perform the fix myself? Please don't feel obliged to accept my offer, at the end of the day if you're happy then that's fine for me :) Alternatively, we could make a full system image which would act as a fallback to revert to should things not go as planned! But, once again, it's your choice and I'll be happy regardless of the decision :)
