My computer wont boot into safe mode or normal mode

it says Ndis.sys is missing or corrupted ive been searching how to fix it all day and i have a portable HDD i was wondering if i can download that Ndis.sys file into my portable HDD can i fix my booting problem? the computer is OEM so it didnt come with any vista disks

Since you don't have a Vista Installation Disk and therefore can't do a bootrec.exe, you can make a Recovery Disk and we can run scandisk from that.

You can make a bootable Recovery Disk using http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/ along with burning software like: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html and, of course, a blank CD (perhaps made on a different computer). To boot to the CD you may need to change the BIOS to make the CD-drive first in the boot sequence. To do that, wait for the screen that tells you the F key to push to access the boot menu or boot setup. Push it quickly. Make the changes, save your work, and exit. Put the CD in the drive and reboot. When prompted, push any key to boot from the CD.

If using the disk, click on Command Prompt and type cd C:\Windows\System32 and enter. Then type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228. Try to attach the report (you may need to copy it to your desktop before it will permit you to attach it) here so we can see if they can be repaired somehow.

While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.

If that doesn't work, do a Startup Repair by from the Recovery Disk. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91467-startup-repair.html. Actually, if you just select the option and follow the prompts you'll be fine without the instructions.

Lorien, is of course correct. Without the DVD you cannot perform a bootrec.exe. Guess it is a bit too early, here. Follow his instructions and hopefully you can get going. You may want to use the SFC command and hope for the best.

Well i did what Lorien said and no luck the startup repair said it had an error and could not repair and the C:\windows\system32 says it is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file.

but i can get into the drivers file from the recovery disk and i have my portable HDD so drag and drop maybe?

You have to type cd c:\Windows\System32 and enter (not just what you typed). You seem to have missed the cd part.

I'm sorry to hear Startup Repair failed - that's not a good sign. But try the other part again with the correctly entered command.

alright i did that but now its asking if i would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts should press no again?

The sfc command should work, I see no reason that it would not. Turn off the computer, remove the battery and then reinstall. Hold the start button for 10 seconds.
Then try the SFC again.
There is a slight chance that this will reset the computer and you will be able to perform the SFC.
I have to be honest, I have my doubts, but I am at a loss.

I would up that to 30 seconds. Some of the modern computers have bigger capacitors than they used to, and 5 seconds is a bit out of date now. I explained why SFC is not working. I don't really want to run chkdsk at the moment, as I don't want to lock out SFC.

Malechicken: I know we are talking behind your back at the moment. This issue is going to be very hard to fix, and we are just taking a moment to plan out our strategy. We will explain all soon. How much data do you have on this PC that you don't want to lose? Don't worry, we can recover it, we just need to know.
