Problem with Sleep Mode

Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum, and I'm not sure where to post this new thread...

I just recently built my own computer, and I think that this may be a problem with Vista, but I'm not sure.

OK, my problem is that whenever I put the computer to sleep mode and move the mouse while it's getting into sleep mode, it'll either restart or kill the computer. When it kills the computer, the fans still run but the lights on the front go out. There is also no picture on the monitor. To turn off the computer, I have to force a shutdown by holding the power button for around 4 seconds. Then, when I try to turn on the computer again, the fans turn on, the hard drive runs, but still no lights on the front of the case nor picutre on the screen. I fixed it by clearing the RTC RAM on the motherboard. After doing that, the computer would boot up, but if I did sleep mode and moved the mouse, then the computer would die again, and I'd have to clear the RTC RAM again.

I'm wondering why this happens with sleep mode. I use Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Is there a solution to this problem or does anyone else have this problem?

Maybe you need to know this? I don't know if that helps.
Motherboard - ASUS P5QL PRO
CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

Thanks for the reply =)

I already looked at those links, although I don't think that any of those solutions solve the problem XD. For me, after sleep mode, it's not that I can't keep it in sleep mode.

I've looked around this Forum a bit, and maybe it would be useful to include that I have an optical USB mouse.

I have the latest Video Card driver, I'm sure of that, and I installed the drivers that came with the Motherboard, so they should be up-to-date, right? (After all, I built this computer about a week ago)

@Everlong18 - I only killed it a few more times because I needed to make sure that moving the mouse was what was causing the computer to die =)

have no definitive answer but you may want to check your bios sleep settings (if they exist ) it may be a conflict there.

As for the status of your M/b Drivers I would check the manufacturers site as you don't know how long ago the actual driver disk was manufactured and things do change quite quickly. you may want to check if the M/b site has a forum ( assuming you havn't already :D)

just had a thought there is a setting in vista that controls sleep / hibernate in that if you do not do anything when recovering from sleep mode in a set time it goes back into sleep, just wondering if that timer may have got screwed up somehow. not sure where it is though somewhere in registry am sure it's mentioned in one of the tutorials here

OK. I don't think that there is a forum for my Motherboard, but I found that they have a place for updates, but most of them are for the onboard LAN or BIOS. So, should I update the BIOS?

I'll check if my current BIOS has sleep settings.

Also, I think that you go to power settings in the Control Panel to change when the computer automatically goes back into sleep mode, but I didn't mess with that stuff. I don't think that it matters if the computer goes into sleep mode by itself, because it only dies when you move the mouse (accidentally or on purpose). When it puts itself to sleep, there is no one around to move the mouse, so I think that it is fine =)

Thanks again!

EDIT: Anyone else have the same problem? I'm just wondering if there is a solution to this or why this happens. Thanks again!

Umm, not necessarily - you should see if there is an updated set of drivers for your mobo from the manufacturer's site, and further more, check for updated BIOS as well.

@johngalt - Ii don't believe that there are updated drivers... so that means I have the latest drivers for the motherboard, but my BIOS version is 0402, and the newest right now is 0502. it says that it updates ExpressGate and expands memory compatibility. Right now, I don't even use ExpressGate and my memory is compatible with the motherboard, I'm pretty sure, because it's working right now. Maybe it'll make it work better.

Anyway, so I downloaded the file and extracted the files, but there's only a .ROM file that I can't even open. So can anyone help me out on how to do this BIOS update thing?

Again, my motherboard is ASUS P5QL PRO.

Thanks again!!!

!!DO NOT FLASH VIA ASUS SOFTWARE!!

that's right you wont be able to open the ROM file from the desktop...
grab your self a USB stick & place the new BIOS on that

shut down the machine, restart, enter BIOS & ''restore optimized defaults''....then shut down..

restart & hit ''advanced boot options'' i think its F8 or F2(refer to manual) & select ''EZflash utility''

it should then show you (in DOS format) the current BIOS & the one on the stick... select the new BIOS ....it will then prompt you for final confirmation on the flash.

& that's it :)

Thanks for the advice, skunksmash, but I already updated the BIOS using another one of ASUS's little tool thingys. It was called ASUSupdate, and I just followed the onscreen instructions and it did work, when I rebooted my system, I looked at the BIOS version, and it was 0502, the newest one. So I know that worked. Anyway, that was how my owner's manual said to do it, so I'm glad it worked...

Now the bad news. I had my hopes up that this may solve my problem, so when I tried to move the mouse again when setting it to sleep mode, guess what? (Uh-oh!) The same problem occured. So yeah... darn.

Anyway, anyone else have any other ideas???
Also, I'm wondering if anyone else has the same problems...

Your problem is most likely related to your hardware - either your motherboard or your mouse - so you should be talking to those folks directly to see if anyone else has reported the same issues and what can be done about it.

It is not a Vista problem as I have no such issues coming out of either sleep or hibernation.

OK... thanks then. It's when you move the mouse going into sleep mode, not coming out. Anyway, thanks for all your help and everything. Are you positive that this problem isn't Vista-related? My motherboard is ASUS so I will probably contact them. The mouse is Microsoft, so I'll probably contact them too. Oh, and johngalt, you might not want to try it, moving the mouse while going into sleep mode, because it will clear your BIOS settings and revert them to the original. Also it takes some time moving jumpers and rebooting and reentering information back into the BIOS.

Thanks again!

PS - if anyone has this problem, or knows someone else who has this problem, could you please tell me. Thanks again everyone!!!
