side by side configuration

Hello!

What sort of documents do you have? Are there a lot of pictures and stuff like that? Do you have a memory stick/flash drive? If you don't know what this is, don't worry. Also, what make and model is your computer. Anything you can find on the case, such as Dell XPS 420, or HP or Compaq, etc. etc.

Thanks!

Lorien,

I'm encountering this "side-by-side configuration" problem after upgrading to Quicken 2011 on an Inspiron 6400 running 32bit Vista. I've loaded the Visual C++ Redistributable Packages to no avail. I started to load the .Net Framework service packs and received error message that the .Net Framework application was not loaded.

I'm nearby in Bethesda, do you accept "hands-on" software compatibility troubleshooting jobs?

Hi FrancaBB,

Welcome to Vista Forums (and howdy neighbor)!

I would never charge for assistance requested in this forum. And although I have a business that does such on-site work (I did it myself for about 20 years until about 18 months ago), I no longer do so myself because of health reasons and cannot accept business though my company obtained in this way - it would be a violation of forum policy. If I were in better health, I might do it for free since you are so close (even though we don't do that here but as long as it was for free I believe it would be acceptable if most uncommon), but alas that really isn't an option.

In any event, the best person here for this type of issue is Niemiro (I know some, but not nearly as much as he does) and I will notify him about this thread and ask him to take a look and hopefully he will post something to assist you (if everything previously posted earlier didn't help - I've tried to post what you should do ASAP to help him to help you). He's in the UK and very busy, so I don't know when he will get to you, but be patient and I'm virtually certain he will (it could be less than an hour from now or a day or two - I don't know his scedule).

In the meantime (and since he could show up in an hour or a day so it would be good to do the following as soon as you can), please post the EXACT error message you received when you tried to install the Framework files (word-for-word) in your next reply. Did it occur with the first one and you stopped there or did some work and then it didn't work on a later one?

Now, let's gather some information to assist in diagnosing the problem(s):

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command prompt and right click on command prompt and click run as Administrator.

Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228.) Copy sfcdetails.txt to the desktop and then attach it to your next reply. We can see if they can be repaired with good copies from the installation disk or other files on the system (unless there are too many).

***************************************************

Next, do the following:

1: Still in Command Prompt, type sxstrace trace -logfile:sxstrace.etl into the Command Prompt window, and press enter ONCE! Set it continue to log!

2: Start the program that creates the side-by-side error message. Let it generate the error message, and OK out of the error message. I need you to make absolutely sure that you do not run programs that work while logging!

3: Go back to the Command Prompt and press enter again to end the logging.

4: Type sxstrace parse -logfile:sxstrace.etl -outfile:%userprofile%\Desktop\sxstrace.txt and press enter.

5: Upload the file sxstrace.txt from your Desktop.

**********************************************************

Next, download and install the System Update Readiness Tool: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821. Please run it, and when it has finished, navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ and copy CheckSUR.log to your Desktop. Then upload it here.

These steps and the three files you upload from them will assist Richard in getting a running start and it would be great if the files were all here when he shows up so he can jump into it immediately.

I hope this helps!

Good luck!

Re: side by side configuration - Quicken 2011 on Vista

Lorien,

This will be slower with me but thank you for your suggestions. I have plenty of work here!

The Microsoft .NET Framework error message was displayed promptly after my hitting "Run" as it was loading the 1.0 Service Pack 3 which was the first .NET service pack that I attempted to load. The verbatim message was:
"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to ge upgraded may be missing or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."
On this computer, I note that there is a Microsoft .NET folder containing a, Framework subfolder that contains a "v2.0.50727" subfolder. I don't see any other contents in these folders. Does this indicate that I need to be downloading a .NET Framework application?

Thank you,

Hello!

I do not think that your .net Framework issue is causing your Side by Side error, I think that they are both serious, but separate, but I will start work on both.

Since you have installed the VC++ Runtimes, then the very likeliest cause is a corruption. This is fixable, but will take a little while. By best suggestion would be to perform a System Restore to before the issue: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html and hope that upgrading Quicken goes smoothly this time.

I would really like to stress this. I think this is your very best solution, saving you hours of work, or reinstalling. I don't think that this should be turned down lightly.

Alternatively, you could reinstall, if you wish.

We can also try to fix if System Restore has not provided the perfect solution. What Lorien has said really!

SFC is crucial. sxs trace and System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) are also very important. If you have time, please run them. I need them run at some point. SFC will hint at what will be required, but I can't really set to energetically without those other two reports, so how you see fit to organise your time :) and ideally, please could you post these in a new thread, and then post a link to that thread here, and you will still get us two :)

The very best of luck!

Richard

Hello Richard,

I attempted to Restore but my procrastination presents me with another problem. The oldest restore date is Jan 23, 2011 but this problem was first encountered when I upgraded to Quicken 2011 on Jan 04. In the ensuing week I worked with Intuit Tech Support on several occasions during which we uninstalled and re-installed the software several times. The Quicken 2011 was loaded from the CD as well as downloaded from their website and, obviously, always with the same unsuccessful result.

So, it appears that I can't identify a Restore point before Jan 04. As I think about it, restoring as of Jan 03 or whenever probably would not be successful since this corruption problem probably existed before then. The corruption problem was revealed on Jan 04 when I attempted to load Quicken 2011 but it was likely already there and there's no way to determine when it first developed. Right?

So, Restore is probably not a successful process, maybe? Does that mean I go to Method 2?

Hello Richard,

I've responded with results of scan in a new thread as you directed. I'm not sure how to "link" from here to there yet and so the new thread title is:

Side-by-side configuration error after Quicken 2010 upgrade

Thank you,

So it seems no one mentioned how to restore factory settings. Cool.

Hi Headcrabs,

It may come to that (there isn't enough information to tell yet), but we do our best to exhaust less radical options first. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But it is far from our first choice and way too early in this case. If all else fails (or something is discovered that makes that the only reasonable choice), or the poster prefers that to the effort involved in repairs (which can be extensive and time-consuming and perhaps a bit advanced), then we will mention it and provide as detailed instructions as possible while trying to save as much as possible to transfer to the restored system. This is different than other forums you may have visited where what you said may have been the first and only suggestion - it's one of the reasons we think this is the best one on the internet.

Best wishes!

Hello!

This is one of the very worst error messages to receive, and could be almost impossible to fix. Primarily, try what Lorien has suggested above, in particular System Restore. If absolutely necessary:

· Download and install the following VC++ Redistributables in the following order: 2005; 2005 SP1; 2008; 2008 SP1, 2010

Web addresses:
1. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
2. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
3. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
4. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)

· Install .Net Framework in the following order: 1.0 SP3; 1.1 SP1; 2.0 SP1; 3.0 SP1; 3.5 SP1, 4.0, Windows Installer 4.5

Web addresses:
1. Download details: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3
2. Download details: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
3. Download details: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (x86)
4. Download details: Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1
5. Download details: Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Standalone Installer)
6. Download details: Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable

Now, restart your computer. Hope desperately that this has fixed your problem, otherwise things get seriously technical!

Richard

So I've gotten one of these side-by-side configuration errors this evening. I've tried a system restore and uninstalling and reinstalling windows live essentials. So far, no joy. I started downloading these, but unfortunately the .NET Framework packs don't appear to be working for me. They won't install, I'm told;

"The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."

Being honest here; I've no idea what I'm upgrading. I'm just hoping to run Windows Live messenger oncemore. Is it possible I don't have what this is upgrading? Or is there something else..?

Thank you in advance.
