Something is wrong

I am running Vissssstaa Home. She what just happened? I am typing normally and every so often I get double letters and eratic mouse and typing. If I reboot it goes away. Avast just did an autttto update. I just rebooted this morning. I hate to keep rebooting because it take my computer 10 - 15 minutes until I can use it again after rebooting. I'm thinking something is not compatible. Avast? Some other software? How can I find out whaat is causing this. I'm off to reboot again. Oh and if my sound is on it makes a funny noise at the same time as it is being eratic.

Thank you Richard, but I don't think the problem is a startup program because the problem arises a few hours after a boot. Today I noticed it happened right after AVAST did an update. Avast has a new system of updating things for me... like today it updated my Adobe Air. I noticed it right after that. I failed to notice the other times if it was just after an update or not.

What you wanted me to do, cold boot, would probably solve my slow start up but right now I'm working on the quirky action that happens sporatically. My computer is about 5 yrs old and this is the second hard drive since the first one crashed before the first year while warranty was still good.

I have 3 GB of ram with Processor 64 x 2 duel core 5000 2.60 gHz

If the noises are funny ticking sounds, most likely the hard drive.

No, not ticking. It's hard to explain what it sounds like. It sounds like the sound was like a record in which someone purposely slowed with their hand... a dragging or lagging sound and at the same time the mouse doesn't point good... it's hard to control and if I'm typing I get multiple letters and the letters appear delayed. I reboot and it's good to go for a few more hours. Lately I can't go as long as I used to before it happens. If I'm on a program that doesn't have sound or I have it turned off, I don't hear it. It is the sound that is there that is distorted.

OK, Rich. I'll try this tomorrow when I have more time. I'll back up tonight.

I have a Seagate backup drive. I saved everything in Feb. How do I save it all again now? I don't see how to update what's already there.

My Computer

Just back up everything like it is the first time.

I thought it was my keyboard too, so I went out and bought a new one... no difference.

The first check disk option didn't work and the second one looks very confusing.

My Computer

The disk check took 4 1/2 hours!!!! But it says it's clean. I think it repairs some files, I didn't stick around to read all the messages.
But it still takes forever to load after reboot. After my desktop comes up it is 4 full minutes before I can open anything. If I do it is unresponsive. Ugh. That is why I leave my computer on and only reboot once a week or so.

No Java wants to update. I cancelled it. I'll do it later and see if I get the same problem. I'll come back and let you know if I have this problem again.

My Computer

Barbee,
As I suggested earlier do the clean boot. Your computer should be just about perfect when you have the clean boot. Then you put the startup progrms back one at a time and see where the problem is.

Clean boot does not remove anything essential for the OS to work. If we find it is software that is not essential, but you want we cross that bridge when we come to it.

The clean boot suggested by RichC46 would normally rule out the possibility that some program running in the background is causing the problem.

My sound is warbling again.... do you think it's my sound card?

RealTEk Driver 6.0.1.5548

I did the clean boot. It was about 1 minute faster, still took about 3 minutes. Do I have to go and put all that stuff I disabled back now?

My Computer

If there was not a marked improvement, that is not the problem. Put everything back the way it was.
See how it works in safe mod. If it works, we just need to find which driver is the problem.
