Something is wrong

Run it in safe mode, until you are fairly certain there is no problem. Safemode runs with a minimum of drivers, it would be a good clue if it works in safe mode. Have a good night.

I got the sound thing again. I was on ABCmouse.com with my granddaughter and again the sound suddenly gets scratchy and dragging. I've checked everything... Is it possible I need a new sound card or driver?

Realtek is the sound driver I have.

To check the driver go to Realtek site and try to update driver.

Thank you Richard. I have good news and bad news.... the upgrade to my sound driver solved the weird noise and erratic keyboard. But it still takes forever to load when I boot up. So I'll just go on restarting it just before I go to bed and let it take its time. When I get up in the a.m. it will be ready for me to do what I need to do. Thanks for your help.

How much free space do you have on your hard drive?

Is Vista set to run defrag automatically?

Have you run the Disk Cleanup utility in Windows Accessories and rebooted?

HI Barb
D is a factory image. What that means in a real crisis, you can use the factory image to bring the computer back to the way it was the day you took it home; no updates, downloads or documents etc.
It will run like it did on day one.

Do this barb
for the sound, go to search by the start button and type dxdiag and then click on it, what does it show?
Go to the same search, for the mouse and keyboard, and type device manager. Make sure that the mouse and keyboard drivers are up to date.

In most cases, there is a driver provided by the mouse and keyboard vendor. If not, it will use a Windows driver.

Even though you have lots of free space, it does help to periodically run the Disk Cleanup utility to remove things like temporary internet files and to empty the recycle bin. You should do that before defragging. Also, schedule the Windows defragger. I have it running when I'm using the system and it doesn't slow things down. These things will speed up normal operations and may help in the boot cycle.

Perhaps you wouldn't mind posting a snapshot of what's in the Startup tab when you run msconfig.exe. Ditto for the Services.

My Computer

I can't read it very well, but I noticed you have two entries Bit..... Is that necessary? I also don't think you need RealPlayer, Adobe Acrobat or Canon. You also have something related to Microsoft unchecked but I don't know what it is so can't say if you should be running it on startup. Otherwise, it doesn't look bad. I wonder what Services looks like.

I took the opportunity to clean up my Startup items while I was looking at yours.

If I make it bigger than it doesn't show the whole thing. Can't you click "print screen" and then paste in your paint program and enlarge.

Question: All the software... do they have to open when I turn on the computer?

Question: I unchecked them all and when I rebooted and looked they were all checked again.. So how do you uncheck permanently?

My Computer

What you do is uncheck one thing and click on Apply. Repeat as necessary. Note that, if you uncheck everything, you won't have any anti-virus protection so only do that for a short period of time.

Unchecking things in Startup doesn't remove a program or make it unusable. You just have to start those things manually. I don't recommend unchecking the Microsoft stuff in Startup unless it's some program that isn't used often.

If you want to do a clean boot with Services disabled, first check the box to hide all Microsoft services and then check the disable all box.

Well, it's back to the noise and sluggishness again. I forgot to reboot last night and I was watching videos and the noise and sluggishness was really bad. Could it have something to do with one of the programs that you use to view videos and Youtube and play games? It always starts when I do one of those things. Rebooting fixes it but not for long.

I just deleted 7z920... a zip program because I read that it could cause problems.
