Hi,

Yesterday night, while watching a streaming video, my laptop felt down. Hopefully, the screen was good and I can still watching my streaming video.

This morning, I start my computer, bios is starting perfectly, then I got the windows logo, but the window where users appearing doesn't launch anymore. I get a black screen.

After a few minutes, I got the following message:

"STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file) :\System Root\System32\Config\SAM or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable."
I've been trying to start my computer on Safe Mode, also on Dos mode but neither are working.

I have a recover Vista CD, but it can't launch when starting my computer.

How to know if it's a hardware failure or software failure ? Hope you can help me, thanks !

Thanks for your reply,

I will let you know.

I'm on the BIOS, and i noticed that under my CD/DVD settings, I got :

Multi sectors transfer disabled
LBA mode control disabled
32 bits I/O disabled

As I noticed that my laptop can't boot with a restore vista CD, should I enable all these 3 (Multisectors, LBA and 32 bits) ? Maybe it will fix this trouble (start with a CD bootable).

Hi Richard,

I can fix this issue overwriting SAM file with the one from config/Regbak.

Thanks anyway for the priority boot, ( I already knew how to do it)

My question was if this following bios cd/DVD settings are related to the fact that I can't load a Restore Vista CD. Do I need to enable of these settings ?

Multi sectors transfer disabled
LBA mode control disabled
32 bits I/O disabled

I dont think so but I would
Try to boot the DVD in another computer
Try to boot another DVD in the problem computer
Lets see if we get any hints as to the real problem
