Switch to Ubuntu?

I'm hoping maybe one day, all software will be free, considering its all written by someone, so it is technically free anyway. Heck, if linux is older than MS then why isn't MS free, obviously Linux is successful. I just dont like the fact to have a 'User Friendly' pc from MS the OS alone is going to cost $200+. I just don't get it a company can charge for something thats not even tangible.

Unix is older than MS. Linux is more recent. Last time I checked, about 10 years ago, there were over 30 versions of linux.

Linux does have some paid software, but much of it is free, but copyrighted.

I did too, thats how I tried it. It worked flawlessly.

I hope one day MS will offer free OS like Linux, they would probably be better off... They have 90 day trials for Win7 so instead of 90 days make it FREE forever.

While you are learning your way around Ubuntu, please remember that Linux is not Windows. It has a different way of doing a lot of things, but in the end, its an OS ... not a religion...

Hey pizzaman, how are you liking ubuntu studio?

I know its just an OS, and I like ubuntu, I just dont have the time really to try and learn something all over again lol. I'll eventually have it permanently on a machine just not my laptop. MS will produce a longer battery life.

It's a tool, first and foremost. Or rather it's a medium to place and manipulate our tools for work and play. I'm glad UBUNTU has matured into a reliable OS. I think (watch me get philosophical) OSs, browsers, etc. have fanatic followings when the user knows this and no other. I always work backwards - what do I want to accomplish, how do I want to get there, and finally what tools do I need to accomplish this. Linux with Apache serves my needs for web servers. MS Windows Server 2008 is great. I am in the process of migrating files from Netware to MS. I'm a little nostalgic about Netware, but - regardless of the mistakes they made with marketing, etc) - it served its purpose. We have Macs and they're great for graphic design and audio/video editing. I'm even thinking of putting up Mac on an PC - Hackingtosh. Like in life, if we don't fear change but instead understand it and even embrace it, we would have a much better existence and a better world.

I'll be sitting on a mountain if case you need me.

I agree. Certain OS's have certain abilities that others lack. MS can do things that Mac can't do. Sure MS gets viruses but there is a lot of software that is available to MS. Linux is fast, reliable and most of all FREE! Mac's are known to look nice and have outrageous prices, with sad specs compared to a MS machine for the same price...

I would like to just wipe Vista off, but I'm finally starting to get somewhat used to this so I dont want to switch right away into something I have to learn all over again, even though it's pretty much all the same thing.

Someone will find something to complain about, probably something the user did, but wants to blame it on the OS, when its not MS's fault. Usually it rarely is, its a software incompatibility.

You'll need to know Ubuntu's terminal (think command prompt but much more important for day-to-day use) and Ubuntu is a bit faster but it still depends on your hardware. You'll also need a firewall - Firestarter - and antivirus for scanning your files if you are transferring them between pc's - AVG free.

I use Xubuntu on an old laptop that Vista previously ran on but linux is limited especially with games, and I can't be bothered to dual boot and reboot between OS's. So, basically you will need to relearn a lot and you'll probably find the overall experience with Vista is easier, especially in terms of apps and drivers.

Thats what I heard about linux from a couple people and I mainly use my PC for gaming so :zip: I like a lot of the features of Vista and at other times grrr :sa: From what I've heard thats all Windows 7 is Vista fixed and fine tuned.

That seems to be the rumor, yes. But I think Vista was way ahead of its developers, and its technology. Don't get me wrong, its stable now, but in the early stages a lot of users had a lot of problems. Thats with any new OS, and its to be expected as not ALL the bugs can be worked out.
