This file does not have a program associated

richc46: I seem to have lost contact since my last post on this thread. I find that any attempt to do a System Restore to a time before the file association problem started is impossible because any restore point is later than that.
Could I uninstall Vista Home Premium and re-install it? I would somehow have to get a disc because the shop where I bought the computer didn't provide a disc. Thanks for any thoughts. I have followed many suggestions for solving this problem but none have worked. i do not see any .exe file listed in the file associations list. Is that a problem? GordonHS

Thanks richc46. My desktop in not listed in the Laptop Recovery Instaructions. Last Known Good Configuration seems to relate to start up problem I don't think that is the problem.
I have used Registry Cleaner and it idetified files that needed fixing and presumably fixed those files but that did not solve the file association problem. Gordon

Try to reset the File association by running the Registry fix

Reset and Fix Broken Windows Vista File Ext and Type Associations (Include EXE, COM, SYS, ZIP, LNK, Folder, Drive) » My Digital Life

I guess your the broken HTML file association has issues with download the HTML and HTM and run it. Make sure you Right Click and Run as administrator

Good Luck,
Captain

My Computer

Thanks Captain. I downloaded the file vista-extfix.zip to my desktop and clicked on open. My screen started flashing and I had to shut down becasue I don't know what is happening. This occurs when I try to open any of the zip files in Restore Default Vista File Extension Type Associations. I would appreciate any comments you have on this issue. Gordon

Captain: I just read one of the links at the bottom of this discussison and I see others have experienced the same flashing and the solution seems to be a re-install of Vista. Gordon.

Hi Gordon

Whenever a situation arises that cannot be remedied with a simple repair, reinstalltion is always a viable alternative. I was hoping that it would not come to that. At the point that you feel that there are no other alternatives, we will be very happy to answer any questions that you may have regarding reinstalling, but by your very intuitive questions, I do not think that you will have many. When the Good Captain, sees your post, I am sure that he will have some comments to add.
