First try to go to search
type cmd
right click when it pops up and run as administrator
type in cmd sfc /scannow
Run 3 times if errors are found

If that does not work if you have mcafee
navigate to

C:/Windows/System32/Tasks/Microsoft/Windows/Media Centre

and delete mcupdate.

Patch, that usually means a program, but which one? It should have worked in Clean Boot if not a driver.
If you do not want to take a chance on losing the restore points that you have in an attempt at repair, I suggest a repair install

Your sure that you did clean boot correctly, should have worked.?

Thanks richard for all your help, I think i will try a clean boot again tomorrow, the thing is, it doesent seem to affect the PC in any way except when i want to restore, but then i go to safe mode and restore, It just bugs me that i cant get it back to proper working order, and then as a last resort i will do a system repair, Its just that i have done a system repair in the past and its so time consuming, i will keep you informed. Works in Safe Mode, but not Clean Boot, its a program that is causing the problem. Safe Mode turns off everything, but the very essential.
If it were me, I wouild turn off the SR to reset it. That procedure has worked in about 75% of the cases that I have had, like this. If you lose your points, you are not losing much at this point. If nothing works you will be doing a repair install, anyway.

I think that it might be a space problem. Make sure there is a enough free space on the Back up Drive.

If you want we can have one last shot, but I don't think your chance of success is high.

Please navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS, and copy CBS.log to your Desktop. Right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and then upload that folder here.

Thanks!

Richard

Hi Rich, Good news, I got system restore to work, I subscribe to smartcomputing magazine and presented the problem to them, they got back to me, Norton was the problem, i think somebody at vista forums suggested norton was the problem, In the past i just switched of norton anti-virus and norton firewall but i had to go deeper and specifically turn off tamper protection, and when i did that, it worked, I thank you for your help and suggestions, tried to tip the scales but they told me to spread it around,patch41
