USB problems

Hey when I connect an external hdd via usb or a flash drive of some sort, most times my pc is not reading them and wont pop up with the options menu, and when i go into my computer to see if the drive is in there the window locks up. When i shut the window down i then lose everything from my desktop and have to reboot the computer by the restart button.

But sometimes my pc will pop up with the options menu ... any ideas?

Hi, first of all are all your drivers up to date. This is usually a good place to start.

Please can you also enter your system specs in, User CP.

As Osholt said, make sure all your drivers are up to date.
Have you by any chance plugged this USB device into the specific port you are using at a time prior to this? Have you ever plugged it into another pc?

    ALWAYS HAVE PROBLEMS! :'(
Hey thanks for your replies ..

Rickick, i have tried alternating the usb outlets and still no difference and when i plug the device into another computer they work no dramas.

Osholt i am running an Intel(R) Core (TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz 2.79GHZ with 4gb ram ( i have 8gb but 32bit vista only recognising 4gb). Is that driver fetch a free addon?

My Computer

I just checked out that driver fetch saw it was a one off cost by the looks of it?..It scanned my computer saying i have 20 outstanding critical drivers .. only one i could see in the usb section which was something to do with printing support .. i had 8 in system devices, interface controller, family smbus controller, pci express root port 1,2,3, pci bus and high precision event timer .... would these effect my usb tho?

Hi,

Try "sfc /scannow" from Safe Mode, and even if it fails, upload the logs as in the tutorial I gave you the link for, and as the raw CBS.log.

My Computer

Hi,

Could you please zip up and upload the contents of the:

"C:\Windows\Minidump"

folder. If you don't know how, use the free 7-zip to zip up the folder. Also, tell me of any other problems. Thanks,

Richard
